  1. 11th Region Top Scorers Noah Sowders Frankfort Christian 25.6 Caleb Hack, Frankfort 23.8 Jay Rose, Madison Southern 21.5 Nick Spalding, Paul Laurence Dunbar 21.4 Jaylen Davis, Madison Central 21.4 Walter Campbell, Western Hills 19.7 Javeon Campbell, Western Hills 19.2 Reece Potter, Lexington Catholic 18.0
  2. That's some pretty solid reporting and analysis there, coach. Thank you. Butler does seem to have DeSales' number of late, much to the chagrin of the DeSales faithful.
  3. Seems like the Bulldogs had to go to great lengths to earn respect this season. Good for them. That 3-7 start was fool's gold for doubters. They are 19-3 since then.
  4. One consolation for Paris in the 40-point loss: It's a 22-point improvement over last year's final when the Greyhounds lost by 62! It was 114-52 Clark in last year's final.
  5. That's 10 district titles in a row for the Camels. The last team other than Campbell County to win the 37th district tournament was Bishop Brossart in 2013 (Campbell was eliminated by Scott in the semifinals that year).
  6. In the 16th Region weekly reviews, I've sort of been hinting that this might happen for Boyd County this postseason for a variety of reasons. And yet, it's possible they meet again in the regional tournament with a different result. They played in the regional final last season and Ashland won by 32.
  7. How about the class of 1956: Kelly Coleman, Wayland: National High School Player of the Year, still Kentucky's all-time leading scorer, starred at Kentucky Wesleyan, NBA draft pick by the Knicks. Corky Withrow, Central City: National high school All-American, All-South All-American, played major league baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals. While playing minor league baseball, he played basketball at Georgetown College then transferred to Kentucky Wesleyan. E.A. Couch, Carr Creek: Captain of the 1956 state championship team, All-South All-American, played at Kentucky. Byron Pinson, Henderson City: All-Southern Conference player at Furman University where he scored 1,598 points. Pascal Benson, Henderson City: A multi-sport star, he turned down a contract with the Milwaukee Braves in 1956 so he could play football for Blanton Collier at Kentucky. Don Mills, Berea: Key reserve on Kentucky's 1958 NCAA championship team (the Fiddlin' Five), NBA draft pick by Syracuse. Roger Newman, Central City: North-South All-American (The North-South Cage Commission held an All-Star game every year between 1949 and 1956 in Murray, Kentucky), played for Kentucky, NBA draft pick by the Celtics.
  8. The 11th Region boys high school basketball coaches this week named their all-region team, coach of the year, official of the year and all-academic team. Congratulations to all!
  9. For sure an upset, Mr. Owl. UH beat Hoptown by six on the road about two weeks ago. But look at these Hopkinsville losses: Lost to 27-1 Warren Central by 27 points 25-5 Lyon County by 11 24-5 McCracken County by 5 23-7 Bowling Green twice, by 20 and 27. 23-7 Ohio County by 11 20-8 Henderson County by 10 19-8 Murray by 20 18-10 DeSales by 28 19-10 University Heights by 6 Some of those margins are ugly. But it sure pays to be tested ahead of the postseason, whether you win or lose, and Hopkinsville has been supremely tested this season. It's like playing the postseason with the batting weight off.
  10. Great question. Doss is already out. But regardless of chances to win, the Dragons had one of the most impossible paths. They drew 19-11 Iroquois for the 22nd District opener, and they lost by just two. Had they won, they had 20-8 Butler waiting in the semifinals and either 21-7 Western or 18-10 DeSales waiting in the district final. Possibly waiting in the Sixth Region tournament would be Evangel Christian, Pleasure Ridge Park, Fairdale and Lou. Holy Cross. With Doss out, Iroquois has that gauntlet waiting now.
  11. I love the extra stuff you do. All season long, just a real solid job. Kudos.
  12. Here ya go, from this week's regional update. Thanks. 3. Frederick Douglass (26-2, 15-2 region, 9-0 42nd): Two more victories for the Broncos with relatively easy wins against Bryan Station and Lafayette to stretch the winning streak to 23. Melo Boone and Kai Simpson scored 22 points each against Bryan Station. The Broncos have beaten George Rogers Clark during the streak. Their only losses are to rankings leaders Great Crossing and Lexington Catholic, who are much more battle-tested than Frederick Douglass. The top-seeded Broncos await Monday's 42nd District tournament first-round winner of Henry Clay vs. Bryan Station in Tuesday's semifinals at Frederick Douglass.
  13. 11th Region Week 12 Review Lexington Catholic finishes the regular season No. 1 in the regional rankings. The Knights are the only team in the region to go unbeaten against regional competition. Lexington Catholic, No. 2 Great Crossing and No. 3 Frederick Douglass went unbeaten against their districts. The temptation for much of the back half of the season has been to move Frederick Douglass into the top two especially as the winning streak got longer and longer. But I wasn't able to justify dropping a team that beat the Broncos behind the Broncos, and that's what I would be doing if I decided to put Great Crossing (or LexCath) behind Frederick Douglass. The top three all enter the postseason riding winning streaks of various lengths. The district tournaments start today. Individually, the KABC named Madison Central's Jaylen Davis and LexCath's Reece Potter region co-players of the year and Wes Scarberry of Frederick Douglass coach of the year. Regional Rankings: 1. Lexington Catholic (28-2, 12-0, 8-0 43rd): The Knights went 2-0 the final week, beating Lincoln County with 22 points and 10 rebounds from Reece Potter and Franklin County. They have beaten Great Crossing by nine, Frederick Douglass by 12 and Lexington Christian by 28. They ended the regular season on a nine-game winning streak. Their only losses have come against North Laurel and Mason County. Other wins include Trinity, Bowling Green, Lyon County, North Oldham, Male, Harrison County and Calloway County. The top-seeded Knights await Monday's 43rd District tournament first-round winner of Paul Laurence Dunbar vs. Lafayette in Tuesday's semifinals at LexCath. 2. Great Crossing (25-5, 12-1, 7-0 41st): The Warhawks wrapped up the regular season with victories against Madison Southern and Oldham County for a season-ending four-game winning streak. Malachi Moreno had 27 points and 12 rebounds versus Madison Southern. They won 12 of their final 14 games. Their losses have come against Covington Catholic, Warren Central, George Rogers Clark, Lexington Catholic and Grant County. They also beat George Rogers Clark plus Ashland Blazer, Lyon County, Covington Holy Cross and Spencer County. They crushed Frederick Douglass by 18! The top-seeded Warhawks await Monday's 41st District tournament first-round winner of Frankfort Christian vs. Franklin County in Tuesday's semifinals at Western Hills. 3. Frederick Douglass (26-2, 15-2, 9-0 42nd): Two more victories for the Broncos with relatively easy wins against Bryan Station and Lafayette to stretch the winning streak to 23. 4. Lexington Christian (22-8, 11-3, 5-3 43rd): The Eagles went 2-1, beating Bourbon County and Franklin County but losing to South Laurel. Anderson Green scored a team weekly high 25 points vs. Bourbon County. They won seven of their final nine and have beaten Madison Central. Play Tates Creek in the district semis. 5. Madison Central (16-14, 7-4, 1-0 44th): The Indians went 1-1, beating South Laurel with 26 points from Jaylen Davis and losing to Covington Catholic despite 16 from Davis, who averaged 20 points for the week and a team-best 21.8 on the season. As I've been saying, they handed Warren Central its only loss 60-43 but that came with point guard Hagan Harrison who left the team after the Dec. 29 Bowling Green game. The Indians are 11-8 following his departure (they were 5-6 with him) as Davis, Robby Todd (13.9 ppg, 8.7 rpg) and Jayden West (12.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg) all stepped up after the sudden change. They won six of their final nine games. Central beat Madison Southern by 20 with their original PG. If Central wins the region, Davis, Todd and West not to mention Eli Steele (4.2 ppg, 2.9 rpg) should be decorated as basketball heroes at their school. None of them missed a regular season game and all four finished top-5 on the team in scoring and rebounding. They play Model in the district semifinals Monday at EKU. 6. Madison Southern (18-12, 3-2, 1-1 44th): The Eagles lost to Great Crossing and Bracken County the final week and dropped five of their final seven games. Braden Hudson and Jay Rose scored 20 points apiece against Great Crossing. The Eagles don't play much in-region with just three regional wins including Model and Paul Laurence Dunbar twice. But out of region they have beaten South Laurel, Estill County and Pulaski County twice. Play Berea in the district semis. 7. Sayre (19-11, 10-6, 4-4 42nd): The Spartans went 2-0 with wins over Wolfe County and Berea. Ian Reesor scored 21 points against Wolfe Co. They have two wins each against Henry Clay, Scott County and Frankfort in the region but have just two wins against Kentucky non-region teams with winning records (Estill County and East Carter). They play Scott County in the district semis. 8. Henry Clay (16-14, 10-8, 2-6 42nd): The Blue Devils went 3-0 last week, taking down Tates Creek, Lafayette and Williamstown. Konlin Brown averaged 20 ppg over the final two contests. The Blue Devils ended the season on a five-game winning streak that came after a 4-11 stretch. They have beaten Butler, Sayre and Western Hills in the region and Conner, Highlands and Butler out of the region. Play Brian Station in a first-round district contest. 9. Western Hills (16-10, 9-5, 6-2 41st): The red-hot Wolverines beat Beth Haven with 17 points and seven rebounds from Will Wilder in their only game for their ninth win in 10 games and 12th in 14. They have region wins against Sayre, Scott County and Tates Creek. They pay Frankfort in the district tournament semis. 10. Scott County (10-20, 4-9, 3-6 42nd): The Cardinals lost to George Rogers Clark despite 21 points and 11 rebounds from Nick Mosby in their only game the final week. They have beaten Bryan Station, Lafayette and Henry Clay twice in the region and that's it. 11. Paul Laurence Dunbar (9-20, 5-12, 3-5 43rd): The Bulldogs went 1-1 losing to Christian County in quadruple overtime despite 38 points from Nick Spalding and beating Bryan Station for the second time to stop a six-game losing streak. They have also beaten Tates Creek. The Bulldogs take on Lafayette in a first-round district contest at LexCath. 12. Tates Creek (11-17, 5-10, 3-5 43rd): The Commodores went 1-1 with a loss to Henry Clay and a win over Garrard County. They have previous wins over Bryan Station and Paul Laurence Dunbar. They have also beaten Lafayette twice and Franklin County. 13. Bryan Station (10-18, 6-9, 3-5 42nd): The Defenders went 1-2 for the week. They have a win against Western Hills and two against Sayre. 14. Lafayette (9-21, 2-15, 1-7 43rd): The Generals were 0-2 for the week, losing to Henry Clay and Frederick Douglass. Their two regional wins came against Lexington Christian and Franklin County. 15. Franklin County (10-17, 2-12, 2-5 41st): The Flyers went 0-2 vs. the season-ending Lexington gauntlet, falling to Lexington Christian and Lexington Catholic on the road. Their only regional wins are against Frankfort and Frankfort Christian. 16. Frankfort (15-12, 5-9, 3-6 41st): The Panthers won their last two games. Among five regional wins are Lafayette, Franklin County, Model and Frankfort Christian twice. 17. Model (13-16, 1-3, 1-1 44th): The Patriots were 1-2 last week. 18. Frankfort Christian (11-19, 1-6, 0-5 41st): The Royals finished the week 0-1. 19. Berea (9-21, 0-4, 0-1 44th): The Pirates went 0-2 the final week.
  14. 6th Region Week 12 Review One big change in the regional rankings as Western occupies the No. 2 spot at the end of the regular season after taking down previous No. 2 Pleasure Ridge Park 57-51 last week for its sixth straight win. PRP slides down one spot to No. 3. Evangel Christian remains No. 1 while riding a five-game winning streak and the hot hand of Cyr Malonga. The rest is pretty much the same as district tournaments loom this week. The KABC named Pleasure Ridge Park's Keith Robinson region player of the year and Evangel Christian's Larry Miller coach of the year. Regional Rankings: 1. Evangel Christian (26-4, 6-0 region, 4-0 23rd District): The Eagles went 3-0 the final week of the regular season, defeating Bowling Green 66-52 with 19 points from Cyr Malonga, beating Seneca 81-22 with 19 points from Malonga, and downing Wayne County 62-49 with 23 from Malonga. They have beaten Pleasure Ridge Park. Outside the region, they've beaten Lincoln County, St. Xavier and Elizabethtown and won the All "A" Classic state tournament. They earned the No. 1 seed at the 23rd District tournament and play the first-round winner of North Bullitt and host Bullitt Central in the semifinals. 2. Western (21-7, 10-2, 3-1 22nd): The Warriors went 2-0 the final week. They had wins against Moore with 16 points from Josiah Lawson and Pleasure Ridge Park with 16 points from Trent Hinkle. They have just four losses to Kentucky schools. They square off Tuesday against DeSales in the 22nd District tournament semifinals at Doss. 3. Pleasure Ridge Park (21-5, 11-2, 4-0 21st): The Panthers went 1-1 for the week, beating Fern Creek with 19 points from Gregory Cole and losing to Western. Have beaten Butler. The No. 1 seed, they await the first-round winner of Beth Haven vs. Valley in the 21st District tournament semifinals. 4. Butler (20-8, 9-2, 3-1 22nd): The Bears beat Jeffersontown in their lone game of the week. Dayton Williams had 12 points and six rebounds. They also have beaten DeSales, Fairdale and Iroquois with wins over Male, Ballard and Fleming County out of the region. Play Iroquois in a district tournament semifinal. 5. DeSales (18-10, 5-1, 3-1 22nd): The Colts beat Bullitt East in their only game of the final week as Crew Gibson had 16 points and 15 rebounds. They have also beaten Western and Iroquois. Have beaten Male, Simon Kenton, Eastern and Elizabethtown outside the region. 6. Fairdale (21-8, 12-5, 3-2 21st): The Bulldogs finished the week 3-0 with wins versus Doss, Meade County and Southern. Jacob Tucker scored 31 points against Meade County. They have won 17 of their last 20 games. They've also beaten Jeffersontown, Beth Haven twice, Iroquois and Fern Creek. Play Lou. Holy Cross in the district semifinals. 7. Iroquois (9-11, 6-7, 1-3 22nd): The Raiders went 2-2 with victories against Shawnee by forfeit and Doss to begin the postseason. They beat Holy Cross by 18 earlier. Beat Doss 59-57 Sunday in a 22nd District first-round tournament game. 8. Holy Cross (21-8, 8-5, 3-2 21st): The Cougars enjoyed a second straight 3-0 week, defeating St. Xavier, Atherton, and Bethlehem with 22 points from Jacob Hand. Have also beaten Fairdale, and Beth Haven in a season split. 9. Fern Creek (11-15, 6-6, 2-0 24th): Went 1-1, losing to Pleasure Ridge Park and beating Doss with 22 points from Jaden Johnson. Has beaten Jeffersontown. Plays Whitefield Academy in a 24th District tournament semifinal at Jeffersontown. 10. Jeffersontown (12-12, 7-4, 2-1 24th): The defending regional champions went 1-1 with a win over Iroquois. The Chargers have beaten Western, Bullitt East twice and Moore. Host Bullitt East in the district tournament semifinals. 11. Beth Haven (20-10, 3-6, 2-4 21st): The Bearcats went 1-1. Their three regional wins came against Lou. Holy Cross, North Bullitt and Valley, which they play in a first-round district tournament game at Valley. 12. Bullitt East (12-17, 6-6, 0-2 24th): The Chargers went 0-2. They have beaten Moore, Doss, North Bullitt and Bullitt Central with earlier regional wins against Iroquois and Lou. Holy Cross. 13. Moore (12-17, 6-9, 3-1 23rd): The Mustangs went 1-1 for the week with a win over Valley. They have also beaten Doss, Southern, North Bullitt and Bullitt Central. Beat Beth Haven in January. Earned the No. 2 district seed and play Southern in the tournament semis. 14. Doss (5-22, 3-10, 0-4 22nd): The Dragons lost both games last week to Fairdale and Fern Creek then dropped the district tournament opener at home to Iroquois on Sunday. They beat Fern Creek and Moore earlier but the season is suddenly over for last year's regional tournament runner-up. 15. Southern (10-20, 4-11, 2-2 23rd): The Trojans went 2-1. They have beaten North Bullitt and Bullitt Central. 16. North Bullitt (15-15, 1-9, 1-4 23rd): The Eagles went 2-1. They have split two games vs. Bullitt Central. 17. Bullitt Central (5-24, 2-8, 1-4 23rd): The Cougars went 0-2 on the week. 18. Valley (0-23, 0-11, 0-4 21st): The Vikings finished the week 0-3. 19. Whitefield Academy (8-18, 0-1, 0-0 24th): Went 1-1 for the week.
  15. 2nd Region Week 12 Review Lyon County sits alone at No. 1 in the rankings after beating University Heights last week. University Heights, which beat Lyon County in the Second Region All "A" Classic Tournament in January, closed the regular season at No. 2 after being tied with the Lyons atop the rankings through last week. There are no other changes to the rankings. The KABC named Henderson County's Gerard Thomas and Madisonville-North Hopkins' Tamarcus Eaves regional co-players of the year (the award goes to a senior) and tabbed University Heights' Melvin Brown coach of the year. As usual, there's plenty of Travis Perry news. Regional Rankings: 1. Lyon County (25-5, 14-1 region, 6-0 5th District) The Lyons enjoyed a second straight 3-0 week, beating University Heights 81-61, Trinity (Whitesville) 75-55 and Dawson Springs 114-56 in the regular season finale. They closed with 11 wins in a row. Junior guard Travis Perry scored 139 points in the three games, including a season- and career-high 61 versus Dawson Springs with Kentucky Wildcats coach John Calipari in attendance. Kentucky offered Perry in June. The 61 points are the most in a game in Kentucky this season and also set a Lyon County single-game record as Perry inched closer to Kelly Coleman on the state's all-time scoring list. Teammate Brady Shoulders recorded a triple-double against Dawson Springs with 27 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists. Perry scored 43 against Trinity (Whitesville). He has 971 points this season. He scored 990 as a sophomore. With 4,159 career points, Perry needs 179 to break Coleman's 67-year-old mark of 4,337 at Wayland High. If Lyon County repeats as district and regional tournament champion, that would guarantee at least six more games for the Lyons, meaning Perry could break the record in the first round of the state tournament if he averages 30 points over those six games. He is averaging 32.4 ppg this season. The top-seeded Lyons play No. 4 host Livingston Central in the opening round of the 5th District tournament. 2. University Heights (19-10, 11-4, 3-1 8th): The Blazers ended the week 1-2, losing to Lyon County by 20 and Webster County by four in overtime, and beating Paducah Tilghman by three in OT. However, they won five of their final seven games. They have an earlier 10-point win against Lyon County. Have also beaten Henderson County by 12 and split two games vs. Madisonville-North Hopkins. The second-seeded Blazers play No. 3 Hopkinsville in the opening round of the district tournament at Christian County. 3. Henderson County (20-8, 7-2, 3-1 6th): The Colonels finished the week 1-1 with a win over Hancock County as Lacon McKinney scored 23 points. Beat Madisonville-North Hopkins by 21 in December. Have won eight of their last 10 games. Clinched a spot in the district final, awaiting the winner of No. 2 host Webster County vs. No. 3 seed Union County. 4. Madisonville-North Hopkins (20-9, 12-4, 6-0 7th): The Maroons went 1-1 with a win against Trigg County as Tamarcus Eaves and Tre Carney scored 16 points each. Have won six of eight games. They've also beaten Christian County, Hopkinsville and Webster County. The No. 1 seed Maroons play No. 4 Dawson Springs in the opener of the district tournament. 5. Christian County (16-12, 6-4, 5-1 8th): The Colonels went 1-1 including an 88-80 quadruple-overtime win at Paul Laurence Dunbar with 22 points and 16 rebounds from Darrell Bateman. They have beaten Hopkinsville twice and are 13-6 since the 3-6 start. The top-seeded Colonels play No. 4 seed Fort Campbell in the district tournament opener. 6. Hopkinsville (12-16, 5-6, 2-3 8th): The Tigers beat Muhlenberg County with 25 points from Dertaurius Leavell in their only game and won four of their last five. Beat Webster County by 10. 7. Webster County (16-11, 10-6, 2-2 6th): The Trojans finished the final week 2-1, beating Marshall County and surprising University Heights by four at home with 20 points from Evan Michalek. Won 10 of their last 13. Beat Hopkins County Central, Crittenden County and Trigg County. Play Union County in the district tournament opener. 8. Hopkins County Central (13-16, 8-7, 4-2 7th): The Storm went 0-2 ending the regular season on a four-game losing streak. Beat Trigg County, Union County and Livingston Central. They hold the No. 2 seed in the district tournament and play host to third-seeded Caldwell County in the opener. 9. Crittenden County (11-17, 6-8, 4-2 5th): The Rockets went 0-1 and closed on a six-game losing streak. Earned the No. 2 seed in the district tournament with a first-round date versus No. 3 Trigg County. Beat Trigg by 12 earlier in the season. 10. Trigg County (14-15, 7-8, 2-4 5th): The Wildcats were 1-2 the final week, beating Dawson Springs. Went 8-15 after the 6-0 start and beat Union County by two. 11. Union County (12-15, 9-7, 1-3 6th): The Braves ended a four-game losing streak and went 2-1. They have beaten Livingston Central, Dawson Springs and Caldwell County twice. 12. Livingston Central (5-21, 4-14, 0-6 5th): The Cardinals were 0-2 for the week and lost their final 13 games. Defeated Dawson Springs, Caldwell County and Fort Campbell before the slide. They are 4-13 vs. the region. 13. Dawson Springs (11-19, 6-12, 1-5 7th): The Panthers went 1-3 the final week. Beat Fort Campbell twice earlier in the season and split a pair of games against Caldwell County. 14. Caldwell County (6-21, 5-16, 1-5 7th): The Tigers went 1-2 for the week, beating Livingston Central for the second time in the finale. They also have beaten Fort Campbell but lost nine of their last 11 games. 15. Fort Campbell (4-20, 0-11, 0-5 8th): The Falcons finished the week 0-3 and mired in an eight-game losing streak.
  16. 16th Region Week 12 Review No changes in the top 10 of the rankings, meaning Ashland Blazer and Boyd County finish the regular season tied for No. 1. Defending regional champion Ashland, Russell, Fleming County and East Carter captured top seeds at their respective district tournaments, which get underway this week at various locations. Defending district champion Ashland Blazer is the top seed in the 64th. Russell is top-seeded in the 63rd and defending champ. East Carter is the No. 1 seed in the 62nd District while Fleming sits atop the 61st. Elliott County is defending 62nd District champ and Rowan County defends the 61st. The KABC named Bath County's Zack Otis regional player of the year and Russell's Derek Cooksey coach of the year. Here are the rankings, highlighting who's hot and who's not. Regional Rankings: 1. Ashland Blazer (18-10, 8-1 region, 3-1 64th District): The Tomcats were idle last week. They haven't played since Feb. 11. They went 6-4 over the final 10 games. As the No. 1 seed, they face No. 4 Rose Hill Christian in the district tournament opener. Barring an upset, they are destined to play Boyd County twice more, in the district and regional tournament finals, after splitting this season's two regular-season meetings with the Lions. 1. Boyd County (23-5, 10-1, 3-1 64th): The Lions won their last two regular season games, beating Russell 78-64 and Morgan County 73-56 with 28 points from Jacob Spurlock for a 2-0 week. They won 12 of their last 13 games and finished with the region's best KHSAA RPI at .645. The No. 2 seed Lions host No. 3 Fairfield at Boyd County Middle School in the district tournament opener. 3. Fleming County (20-8, 10-2, 5-1 61st): The Panthers defeated a 24-6 Harrison County squad 55-48 at home in the season finale for a 1-0 week. Lucas Jolly led the team with 16 points and nine rebounds. They finished the season on an eight-game winning streak. They have won 11 of their last 12 and host the 61st District tournament with the No. 1 seed, playing No. 4 Menifee County in the opener. 4. Russell (24-5, 19-3, 6-1 63rd): The Red Devils went 2-1, losing to Boyd County by 14 and beating Fairview 81-63 and Rowan County 67-56. Damon Charles scored 31 points against Fairview. Went 3-2 after the 16-game winning streak ended. Earned the No. 1 seed in the district tournament with a first-round date against No. 4 Raceland at Lewis County Middle School. 5. Morgan County (20-7, 8-3, 5-1 62nd): The Cougars finished the week 1-1 with an 85-67 win over Buckhorn in the finale thanks to a 41-point explosion by Preston Hoskins. They've won seven of their last eight and claimed the No. 2 seed in the district, hosting No. 3 West Carter in the tournament opener. 6. Rowan County (13-15, 9-8, 4-2 61st District): The Vikings lost to Russell by 11 in the final game, ending the regular season on a four-game losing streak. They lost six of their final eight. 17. 6th Region Week 11 Review Not a lot of movement in the rankings this week. Fairdale finally moved ahead of Fern Creek after beating the Tigers at home, leapfrogged two more teams and landed at No. 6 with its eighth win in 10 games. Moore moved ahead of Doss after blasting the Dragons and landed at No. 14. Record-wise, Evangel Christian is the lone unbeaten team against regional competition. Evangel Christian, Pleasure Ridge Park and Fern Creek remained unbeaten against their respective districts. Regional Rankings: 1. Evangel Christian (23-4): The Eagles went 2-0 last week. They defeated Bardstown 84-45 with 22 points from Cyr Malonga and beat Ballard 83-73 with 37 points from Kyran Tilley, who averaged 20.5 ppg. 18. 11th Region Week 11 Review Lexington Catholic continued to solidify its spot at No. 1 with another undefeated week and No. 2 Great Crossing also enjoyed an unbeaten week. Frederick Douglass stays at No. 3 with an unblemished record that extended its long winning streak. Speaking of unbeatens, LexCath is the only unbeaten team against the region. They are one of four unbeatens against district opponents along with Great Crossing, Frederick Douglass and Madison Central. Changes in the rankings include a move up by Sayre. Individually, Madison Central's Jaylen Davis had a nice scoring week as did Madison Southern's Jay Rose. Regional Rankings: 1. Lexington Catholic (26-2): The Knights went 2-0 last week, beating Madison Central with 16 points from Hudson Sparks and city rival Lexington Christian. They have won seven games in a row. Their only losses have come against North Laurel and Mason County. They are 11-0 against regional opponents and 8-0 vs. 43rd District foes. Quality wins includes Frederick Douglass, Bowling Green, Lyon County, North Oldham, Male, Harrison County and Calloway County. 2. Great Crossing (23-5): The Warhawks went 2-0 with wins over Henry Clay and St. Henry. Vince Dawson scored 18 points versus Henry Clay. The Broncos' only losses are to rankings leaders Great Crossing and Lexington Catholic. 4. Lexington Christian (20-7): The Eagles went 2-1, beating Tates Creek with 12 points from Saxton Howard and Cincinnati Hills Christian, but losing to Lexington Catholic for the second time. They have beaten Madison Central. They are 10-3 against the region with the other loss to Lafayette and 5-3 vs. the 43rd District. 5. Madison Central (15-13): The Indians went 2-1, losing to Lexington Catholic despite 20 points from Jayden West and beating Franklin County and Christian County. Jaylen Davis scored 25 against Franklin County and 35 vs. Christian County. He averaged 25 ppg on the week. The Indians handed Warren Central its only loss but that came with point guard Hagan Harrison who left the team. The Indians are 10-7 following his departure (they were 5-6 with him). They are 7-4 against the region, 1-0 vs. the 44th District. Central beat Madison Southern by 20 with Harrison. 6. Madison Southern (18-10): Not a bad week for the Eagles who went 2-1. They beat Pulaski County for the second time with 34 points from Jay Rose and Newport Central Catholic, and lost to George Rogers Clark by only three. Rose scored 15 against Clark. They are 3-1 vs. the region, 1-1 vs. the 41st District. 7. Sayre (17-11): The Spartans went 1-1. They are 9-6 against regional opponents including two wins each against Henry Clay, Scott County and Frankfort. But they have just two wins against Kentucky teams with winning records (Estill County and East Carter). 8. Henry Clay (13-14): The Blue Devils went 2-1 last week, losing by 11 to Great Crossing and beating Paul Laurence Dunbar by four and Bryan Station by eight. Mason Hawkins scored 19 against Dunbar. Seventeen of their last 21 games have been decided by nine points or fewer. Henry Clay's first six losses came against Eastern, Harrison County, Simon Kenton, Lincoln County, Sayre and McCracken County. They have beaten Conner, Highlands and Butler. But they are 8-8 in the region and 2-6 against the 42nd District. Have also beaten Bryan Station and Western Hills. 9. Western Hills (15-10): The Wolverines went 1-1 with a win over Frankfort. They are 9-5 in the region including a win against Sayre and 6-2 vs. 41st District foes. 10. Scott County (10-19): The Cardinals went 1-1 with a win over Bryan Station. They have lost eight of 10. 19. 16th Region Week 11 Review Rivals Ashland Blazer and Boyd County are back in a tie atop the rankings after Boyd lost to Harlan County last week. No other changes in the top nine although some jockeying moves were made. Hot Fairview moves into the top 10. At the top, Ashland and Boyd have split their two meetings, each getting a win on the road. Boyd County won the last meeting. It raised the question: Has Boyd finally caught up to its nemesis or was the win against Ashland an outlier. They have delivered each other's only regional and district losses, but Ashland won the district seeding game and earned the top seed at the district tournament. These teams are closer than their KHSAA RPI suggest (Boyd .633, Ashland .598). Elsewhere, Russell finally took a tumble after putting together a long winning streak, but the Red Devils don't fall in the rankings. Fleming County is now the hottest team in the region but there were several teams that put together unbeaten weeks. Regional Rankings: 1. Ashland Blazer (18-10): The Tomcats went 2-0 with wins against Rowan County and Huntington Spring Valley (WV). Zander Carter scored 24 points against Rowan County. They are 8-1 versus the region, the only loss coming against Boyd County, and 3-1 vs. the 64th District, the lone loss coming to Boyd. They have a nine-point win at Boyd County and a 22-point win over Fleming County. They have beaten nine Kentucky teams with winning records. Three of their losses have come against state powers CovCath, George Rogers Clark and Great Crossing, so they have been tested a little more than Boyd. The Tomcats also have a lot of recent history on their side, compared to Boyd, going 4-0 against the Lions in 2021-22. They have beaten Boyd in two of the last four regional championship games since Boyd beat Ashland in the 2018 final, all under former coach Jason Mays, who was let go just before the season started, leaving a new less seasoned head coach to navigate some uncharted waters. That's a big question. Will the Tomcats be coached as well as previous postseasons come tournament time. 1. Boyd County (21-5): The Lions started the week 3-0, extending their winning streak to 10 but ended the week with a 71-63 loss to Rowan County. They defeated Raceland 93-50, Elliott County 96-43 and needed overtime to beat a 14-13 Perry County Central squad 71-70. Jacob Spurlock scored 25 against Perry County Central. They have scored at least 90 points nine times with three other games at 89, 88 and 87. They average a state-leading 84 points per game and now have 11 wins against state teams with winning records including Pikeville, Eastern, Lawrence County and Campbell County. They remained 8-1 against the region, the only loss coming against Ashland, and 3-1 versus the 64th District, the only loss to Ashland. They are the district's No. 2 seed with some terrible tournament history against Ashland, which is seeking a fifth straight regional title and 36th overall. 3. Fleming County (19-8): The Panthers went 2-0 for the second straight week, beating Robertson County and Ryle. The winning streak sits at seven. They have won 10 of their last 11. They remain 10-2 vs. the region and 5-1 vs. 61st District foes. Beat Russell by 21 earlier this season. 4. Russell (22-4): The Red Devils' streak of 16 consecutive wins and seven straight unbeaten weeks ended with a 58-42 district loss to Greenup County. They went 2-1 last week with victories against Elliott County and Bath County. Zaylen Carter had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds against Elliott County. They are 17-2 vs. the region and 6-1 vs. the 63rd District, earning the district tournament's No. 1 seed. The last previous team to beat them was Fleming County, accounting for their other regional loss. 5. Morgan County (19-6): Beat Buckhorn and West Carter for a 2-0 week. Preston Hoskins erupted for 29 points against West Carter. They are 7-2 against the region including a 27-point win against Bath County, and 5-1 vs. the 62nd District. 6. Rowan County (13-14): The Vikings went 0-2, losing to Ashland Blazer and East Carter. They had won seven of their previous 10. They are 9-6 vs. the region with two wins over Bath County and 4-2 vs. the 61st District. Just two non-region wins against state teams with winning records (Somerset, Montgomery County). 7. Bath County (14-12): Lost to Scott and Russell, making them 6-11 since the 8-1 start. Still just two wins against Kentucky teams with winning records since Dec. 13 (Estill County, East Carter). The Wildcats are 8-8 against the region, with two close wins against East Carter, and 3-3 vs. 61st District foes. 8. East Carter (17-9): The Raiders put together a 4-0 week, beating Elliott County, Menifee County, Nicholas County and Rowan County, earning a season split with Rowan. Ty Scott scored 21 against Elliott. Evan Goodman had 20 vs. Menifee. Blake Hall had 24 vs. Rowan. They are 11-3 over the last 14 games but have just two wins against Kentucky teams with winning records (Bethlehem, Morgan County). They are 13-5 vs. the region, with two wins vs. Greenup County, and 5-1 against 62nd District opponents. 9. Greenup County (11-15): The Musketeers went 2-0, beating West Carter for the second time with 18 points from Bradley Adkins and taking down Russell 58-42 in a 63rd District upset. They are 8-8 vs. the region with a split against Fairview, 2-2 vs. district foes. 10. Fairview (14-14): The Eagles evened their overall record with their first 3-0 week that included second wins of the season against both Rose Hill Christian and Lawrence County plus a win over Raceland for the first time in three tries. Steven Day scored 25 against Rose Hill. They have won four of their last six. They are 7-10 against the region, 2-4 vs. the 64th District. They are the district's No. 3 seed. 11. Lewis County (9-17): The Lions enjoyed a 3-0 week for the first time this season, beating West Carter, and both Rose Hill Christian and Raceland for the second time. They are 6-4 over the last 10 games. They are now 8-7 against regional opponents with two wins over Raceland. They are 3-3 against 63rd District competition. 12. Raceland (12-16): An 0-3 week dropped the Rams to 7-12 in the region. They are 0-6 vs. the 63rd District. After a 10-5 start, they have lost 11 of 13 in a major nosedive. They have beaten Menifee County. They are 2-1 in three meetings with Fairview. 13. Menifee County (9-18): The Wildcats went 0-2 with losses to East Carter and Powell County. They are 5-10 against the region and 0-6 against the 61st District. Have beaten Fairview by 10 but just 2-9 over the last 11 games. 14. West Carter (5-19): The Comets went 0-3 last week, including a road loss to Lewis County. They are 3-14 in the region with two wins against Rose Hill Christian and one vs. Elliott County. They are 1-4 vs. the 62nd District. 15. Elliott County (2-23): The Lions finished the week 0-3, extending their losing streak to 17. They are 0-17 against the region and 0-5 vs. 62nd District foes. 16. Rose Hill Christian (4-22): The Royals went 0-4. The losing streak is at 11. They are 0-10 in the region and 0-2 against the 64th District They have the district tournament's No. 4 seed.
  20. 2nd Region Week 11 Review No changes to the rankings this week. But, hark! There could be a big change tonight when co-leaders Lyon County and University Heights play in a 7:30 p.m. rematch at Lyon County. University Heights beat Lyon County by 10 on Jan. 10 in the Second Region All "A" Classic. Lyon County won last season's meeting, 71-57. University Heights' last win over the Lions was Jan. 17, 2020.
