I disagree in part.  I want to win all of my freshman games and ideally all of my JV games but I understand JV comes in a lot of flavors.

Wanting to win, and making it your primary focus are two different things. There’s also a big difference in the emphasis from an administrative point of view (at least there should be).

If frosh or JV go winless, but the varsity team is 9-1 with a run into the playoffs, admin might ask the head coach some questions. There’s little chance anyone’s heads will roll. Especially if the head coach sees the big picture and players were developed. If varsity goes winless, and JV finishes undefeated, especially if there’s a pattern of such, the whole staff might be out of a job.

  2. If you’re focused on winning at any level below varsity, you’ve got your priorities wayyyyy out of whack.

No one cares about the win-loss record of a kid’s 5th grade team. Like him or not, Julian Tackett himself makes a powerful statement in the KHSAA sports safety clinic: JV games and below are nothing more than glorified scrimmages.

The 5th grade kid who shows worlds’ of promise may peak in 7th grade and be done.

I was a 6-foot, 230 pound, athletic 8th grader who loved basketball. I never grew another inch. Do you know how much varsity playing time a 6-foot, 230 pound varsity basketball player gets on a team with five starters 6-4 and above? Virtually none.

Likewise, some of those same kids couldn’t stop me from scoring in middle school, but hit their growth spurts late.

Every coach who has his priorities in order will teach character first. The varsity head coach is the only one with any skin in the win-loss record.

In the old days before McCracken county even had football Augusta Tilghman High School now Paducah Tilghman had 3 Junior High Schools all with football teams. They fed Tilghman 80-100 sophomore players every year that had a lot of game experience. The population of Paducah started dropping and eventually they consolidated to one middle school in Paducah and then Tilghman became a 9-12 Highschool. The county schools started football programs and Heath was the only one to ever win a state Championship. Before McCracken County built the new McCracken High School, Lone Oak had Jack Haskin led teams made the State Championship 2 times but lost both times. McCracken County has the fan base, facilities and the resources  to win but still have not had a steady stream of more than 3-4 outstanding Football players. Lots of good players but not D1 talent like Louisville, Lexington etc. Trying to bring 3 middle schools together every day to practice has to be a night mare, so I agree that has hurt County football. I am a football fan and I root for Tilghman and McCracken County. Things will get better in time for both schools I hope in Football.

    This!!

We deal with this in Daviess County as well. Except here, it’s 3 middle schools into 2 high schools and one of the middle schools splits students. The middle school coaches are not invested in the high school programs. Hopeful we start to see that turn around soon, as I’ve heard there’s direction from central office to fix it.

I’m not sure the number but this did happen, it has decimated the McCracken middle school program, and will hurt the variety program for the next 4 years most likely.

Reminds me why I’m glad I left that area. Seems like that kind of stuff was always happening when it was Lone Oak, Reidland and Heath as well. Not to mention how easy it was for someone to jump ship to St Mary’s for basketball or baseball.

I get the point... which is don't blame the kid's actions on some third party that isn't anywhere near the situation (like professional athletes).  Assign the blame closer to home (literally).

But it may not have everything or even anything to do with the parents either.  Good parents are not responsible for choices their kids make that go against everything they have been taught.  I did lots of asinine things as a teen that I can in no way blame on my parents (and for which I was royally punished... when they knew about it).

The kid bears the responsibility and must be made to bear the consequences.  Perhaps, poor parenting went into it, but that can only be determined on a case-by-case basis and is almost never 100% the parents' fault.  The young man could have done differently but chose not to.  I'm not picking on you @wrn1979, just making a point about who is really at fault and therefore must be held accountable.  It is the opportunity for a good life lesson for all who are watching.  I really liked the comment that said the kid's contrition should be considered when determining the extent of the consequence.

I agree with you. Unfortunately, a large percentage of parents in today’s world do nothing but support their kids against any kind of discipline issued by a school.

I don’t think they could do that to Apollo they’re not a bad team.

I don’t think so either, especially since we beat them at home last year with a huge defensive stand.

Unfortunately, in the time I’ve lived here that was the first time I’ve been to an AHS vs DC game that did not involve at least a scuffle and/or ejection. Would rather watch kids play the game hard and leave the nonsense at home. If the head coach is encouraging that kind of play, he should be fired.

@theguruMark Mathis of the Messenger Inquirer tweets that Humphries left the game in 3rd quarter but got in a 63 yard passing TD to go up 57-7 (Bush league) That was his 7th.   He also hit a 46 yard TD to go up 50-7 (the running clock was already in effect) right before half.

Owensboro could have beat Ohio 100-0 but hit the brakes.   Even though Boone didn’t have many reps on offense for O, Fallin let a minute or more run off and didn’t score again before half.

That’s the difference between a school with a tradition of winning, and one that finds themselves in the middle of a blessed season. Owensboro acts like they’ve done this before. County loses all sense of class whatsoever.

Prediction: if they do that against Apollo with the history of animosity between the schools, someone will get hurt.
