If the issue was an academic one, then why not allow the 5th year for academic improvement only? No clue why sports were tied into this one.

In the end I do not believe that many school districts will allow for this to occur.

If one does they all have to. If a kid wants to stay back, but can’t, he can easily transfer and repeat the same grade. Sure he must set out a year, but he would still get 4 years of playing, but basically a redshirt year when he transfers.

  2. The school districts can make this as easy on the kids or as hard on the kids as they want to, from my understanding of the law. It’s going to be eye opening which schools actually care about their sports programs and which ones don’t.

I know little to nothing about the education side of school. I won’t pretend I know the strengths and weaknesses of it from that side, but speaking purely from the athletic stand point. If other schools are allowing kids to take college classes, online classes, etc. to get them enrolled where it benefits them individually and also gets them on the field or court and your district is unwilling to do the same, then they really don’t care about your sports programs winning.

The commentators I listened to on the radio said Graves didn't double team Harmon as much as they might until the third quarter.

Accurate. We have one of the best defenders in the region in Marcus Isaiah. Isaiah did as good as anyone possibly could the first half and he still scored 24 points. Almost every single shot was contested. He only missed 4 shots all night. One was almost at mid court.

Third quarter we doubled him every time he touched it. He still got 23 in second half. Marshall wins region if he can repeat that two more times. I don’t know if it’s doable.

As far as refs, he got some calls, but definitely weren’t protecting him.

    Good Luck to Coach Thompson!

I hope he doesn't feel he has to win a couple championships early on to be successful at PT.

That should be the goal, but not the expectation at PT IMO.  They have had SUCH turnover and unrest at the head coaching spot, in what, the last 10 years (and you wonder why they haven't beaten Mayfield in this time?) that a stable run deep in the playoffs with marked improvement of players should be the expectation correct?  It just seems the cart is ahead of the horse alot at PT right now.  Just get things stable again for the kids.  Instill a system the kids will know eventually coming into spring practice a couple years in a row.  You have to start here.  Championships may come, but you need stability.

I'm pulling for Coach Thompson to get a real chance and provide that stability and development for PT!  Go Blue Tornados!

A ton of money has been poured into this program, not so much by the school, the last couple of years and the expectation is a state championship or bust. I'm with you 100% and it is an unfair expectation for this coach, but thats where PT base is at right now.

Graves is always good - I mean the Mayfield area is a football factory.  The RB coming back is huge and I think the WR Grant was a junior as well - very talented and will make some noise.  Defense needed some work, but offense was legit.

The last 3-4 years Mayfield isn’t taking the talent from Graves like they use to. I think that is why you are seeing Graves able to compete with teams like Owensboro and Mayfield losing to Murray second round which would have been unheard of 10 years ago. This is not to discredit a good Murray team.

Back to the topic, Owensboro and Graves game. It being at Graves helps a lot. But Owensboro is probably still a 2 td favorite team. Especially with Graves losing their QB and Owensboro returning probably the best QB in the state again. I just don’t believe it will be a blow out. Graves should have a stretch over the next 3-4 years they should be able to compete with Owensboro. I still think this year as long as  Wimsatt is at QB they’re the clear favorite.

  6. I knew we would be able to score and we scored the same amount as last time. The devils helped us out keeping them off the board for almost the whole  first half. Special teams cost the Eagles again. A punt blocked inside our own redzone with minutes in the first half lead to Owensboro first td. Then they took their opening kickoff of the second half back.

Great effort by the Eagles. They return a lot but lose a lot next season. Hats off to Owensboro. They’ll be tough to beat down the stretch.

  7. Graves will score. The offense has produced all season. Owensboro is clearly the best team the Eagles have played, but they showed last time they can definitely move the ball. They also were able to contain Owensboro offense pretty well last game by Owensboro standards which are different than most teams.

Eagles are going to have to force turnovers and not spot Owensboro points. They gifted them their first by not recovering a deep kickoff, allowed them to take a kickoff back, and then they fumbled and Owensboro scooped and scored. Owensboro has the athletes but like state above Graves could possibly grind this game out as they are very good in the trenches. Hard to load the box since Graves has some tall fast receivers on the outside in Richards and Grant. I expect a closer game than last year, but Owensboro is the favorite.

I’ll come back to this topic later but Wimsatt’s 2 picks were the following:  A pass caught be his WR Rogers who juggles and flipped it up in the air right to Graves DB (I might add at the Graves 10 yard line and the Devils about to go up 21-7) and the 2nd was 5 seconds before half and Wimsatt throwing downfield just to try make something happen.  The only other pass he missed was a 55 yard bomb to Tinsley, which was a beautiful throw just a yard or 2 out of reach.

This is accurate. The 2nd pick looked like he didn’t see the Graves defender, but it wasn’t really even a bad throw. Just trying to get the ball downfield. Kid doesn’t scream D1 by his athleticism, however he is more athletic than anyone else on the field, but he simply throws the ball perfect on pretty much every single throw. He is special! Because of that I believe he will pick apart the Grayson defense.

  9. Graves surprisingly had more yards from the stats I saw. 3 plays stick out to me in this game.

The opening kickoff. Graves player could not pick up the ball on about the 25. Owensboro gets it and puts it in the endzone 7 points. Opening half kickoff Owensboro took back was another 7. Then the backup Rb fumbling and Owensboro scoops and score. That’s 21 points you gave them without Wimsatt behind center. Not many teams going to win that game against Owensboro.

excluding 1 half this Graves team has been solid all season. McKee, Brown, and the two big receivers get a lot of attention, as they should, but Graves has deepened a lot on some sophomores in key positions. To me that’s encouraging for this district matchup we will see over the next few years.

Owensboro definitely the more athletic team, but I’m excited about playing them again.

  10. First game was 93. Graves won.
    They won another in 99
Then they won 3 out of 5 years from 04-08

Up until that point the series was 5 to 11. Honestly not terrible considering its Mayfield and Graves was new to Football. But the run Mayfield has been on the past decade has really separated the gap. As I am sure it had with most teams they have played. (Sorry Devil you must have posted just before me)

  11. It is evident on this thread alone, the there is still some bad blood over that Murray-Beechwood game! Someone find the video!

Its hard to imagine a more miraculous/tragic win/loss than Mayfield/Somerset this year, definitely not more miraculous than the Somerset victory, but if Murray lost like that, that might be a worse lost than Mayfields.
