To be clear, this is not correct. Nearly every NDA volleyball player plays club for an organization run by Julia Hunt’s Mom. Do you think Julia Hunt’s Mom makes it a point to ostracize multi-sport athletes when her daughter is arguably the best multi sport athlete in the state? My understanding is that NDA basketball players are not allowed to play club volleyball past their freshman year. And let’s not pretend like high school basketball had a succinct schedule confined to a few months, as does high school volleyball. NDA’s volleyball coaches and the clubs where their athletes play in the offseason, all promote and encourage multi-sport athletes.
I can’t speak for club soccer, but I’ve heard they are a nightmare for kids who want to have a life off the soccer field. Club soccer very well may be an issue, but club volleyball is not. It’s fair to say club volleyball has a demanding schedule and kids don’t want to do both, but it happens every year at other schools. It’s up to the high school coaches to be flexible, understanding, and allow these kids to pursue a college scholarship in a sport other than basketball, while being on the high school team.

Yes, I was definitely clunky in my language regarding club volleyball and soccer. I was not intending to imply or state that it was the fault of the clubs in either sport. I was definitely not intending to say that. Just saying that choosing to play highly competitive club sports does create a schedule that can be tough to manage with basketball. That being said, there are absolutely many athletes and high schools that are successful making all of those commitments work.

I said nothing about Coach Murphy, you did.  I was wondering why there are hardly any seniors on the team. But since you automatically assumed I was I'll say this.   I am quite familiar with that 2022 team.   They were loaded with talent and is the anomaly in the last 6 years.   How many seniors were on the team his first year and the year after that and the year after that? There was one senior in 2023 and one senior this year.  Where are they going and why, when year after year, they have really good freshman teams?

Yes, when you look at NDA basketball the last 10 years, you have “pre-coach Murphy” where they lost in the first round of the districts 4 years in a row and had an average record of 12-14, then you have the Coach Murphy tenure where they have won 5 of 6 district titles and performed in the regional tournament in line with what I referenced earlier. As far as the senior numbers go, last year they had 1, that class was a very heavy soccer and volleyball class. This year they had one, there are a few reasons why, but it is player by player. They have 6 juniors on this team, all should be back. They have been successful with freshman teams, but that can be deceiving, none of the really good players from Ryle and Cooper played a minute of freshman basketball. Over half of the kids playing freshman basketball are middle schoolers. Senior numbers the past two years were definitely impacted by club soccer and volleyball.

Another first round regional exit by Notre Dame.  What's going on there?  There is plenty of talent there year after year, yet it seems that they hardly ever have any seniors on the team.   Why do so many quit the team.   Maybe a topic for another thread.

While I understand the sentiment of your comment, I think it would be better expressed as, “another year for NDA without a regional championship .” Coach Murphy has been at NDA for 6 seasons, he has 2 finals appearances, 2 semifinals and 2 first round exits. This is during a period against generational talent at Ryle and Cooper, although clearly NDAs 2022 team should have done better. There are definitely a lot of reasons why there weren't more seniors the last two season. One is probably that the 2022 team had 7 seniors so that can clog up the pipeline. While every school has their circumstances, it likely does matter that the volleyball and soccer teams have done so well the last 4+ years. I know volleyball took a lot of talent from last years team, and soccer took a very good player this year (Tranter.) To be clear it’s not Coach Murphy or the other coaches that create a single sport dynamic, it’s club volleyball and club soccer. Coach Murphy is very clear that he will work with other NDA sports, but it’s nearly impossible to work around the 9-10 month a year club schedules. Definitely a disappointing season, but I don’t know that it’s a pattern for Coach Murphy over his tenure.

17 NKY teams battle it out for the chance to be top JV program in the area.

NDA defeated a good St Henry team and Cooper outlasted Highlands to get to the Final.

NDA wins a back and forth battle in a fun game to watch 48-44.

I'm sorry I didn’t get the whole tourney team but Notre Dames newcomer; Freshman Sarah Young,  takes home the tournament MVP honors.

Great championship game, both JV teams featured a lot of freshman talent. Prior to this summer, Tournament MVP Sarah Young hadn’t played organized basketball since 3rd grade…the PaNDA faithful are looking forward to watching her develop for the next 3 years!

Saw this one in person. SK impressive from 3 early. Looked unstoppable. Webb got in foul trouble early and that seemed to start the comeback for the Pandas.
I thought the story was less about fouls and more about how Gibson had 0 points in the first half and 17 in the second. Also Kelch and Purnell had 23 in first half and only 5 in second.
Sophomore Addie Lawrie was very impressive for the Pandas.

Sloppy, but Gutsy win for the Pandas.

Great synopsis 1992Rebel, I am certain that whichever team ended up on the short end of this game was going to feel like they were on the wrong end of some crucial calls. The young Pioneers were unstoppable early, up 18-3 at one point. PaNDAs did just enough to pull it out. Addie Lawrie was the difference in the game for NDA.

I'm a huge fan of Sophia, on and off the court, but I'm comfortable with her being the 4th Big in the area to start the year.  I have her listed above in the Top 10, I certainly would never forget about her, I just hope their guards don't forget about her in the offensive half.  😎

I saw NDA play a lot this summer, Sophia will get the ball, confident that won’t be an issue.

Well.....This is not how I expected to feel today.  I realized last night was going to be a BATTLE.  This is and has been the BIGGEST NKY rivalry since forever!  Highlands/NDA its up there with UK v Duke, Bengals v Steelers, Highlands v Cov Cath.....  Wins against these storied programs feel so much better than wins against other teams.  BUT the reverse is so TRUE, losses against these teams are hard to recover from since you are amped up so much for this type of game, you realize the atmosphere and energy at the games are going to be on steroids.  Like @observerbynature stated the electricity at the soccer complex was to a whole new level that I have never seen for a soccer game in all my years.  Let me repeat that for the people in the back.  The electricity last night for a HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GAME was awesome.  Who would have thought 20 years ago that a High School girls soccer game would create basically a standing room only crowd watching a girls game.  I credit the love of soccer in this area, the girls that have taken on the sport and really dived into it, the coaches who have fallen in love with coaching it, and the parents who have allowed these girls to dream big by driving all over the country to play this game, to train all year around.  The money and time spent in cars, hotels, etc.  All of that was worth it based on what I saw last night.  We saw 2 teams, approx 30+ players put forth everything they have learned in their life to produce such a quality game of soccer.  A beautiful game of soccer.  I am sooooo very proud of all of you, no matter what jersey you wore last night.  You did good young ladies, you did good.  There were so many young girls (middle school girls, elementary girls) that were watching in AWE of your athleticism last night.  O my goodness I am in tears writing this.  I speak from the heart!

3 years ago when I joined BGP I noticed there was a potential need for someone to champion these girls in KY High School soccer.  I took that challenge, I thank @thegurufor allowing us to have a channel to showcase these young awesome ladies.  I realize sometimes I showcase some sarcasm and humor and if I ever rubbed someone the wrong way or went to far on some of my posts I apologize.

@Runcible Owl and @The Double Deuce I want to say you have been great colleagues on BGP throughout my journey.

There were 13 girls out there having the honor and privilege of wearing the H one last time last night.  Some of them will wear another jersey next year in college some will not.  They have been awesome to watch grow up, mature, and develop into awesome young women.  They should be very proud of what they have accomplished throughout their career in the storied program of Highlands High School girls soccer.

To NDA you have been a tough program to go toe to toe in these last several years.  Good luck in the next few weeks, it will be fun to watch how successful you will be.  Represent the 9th Region with Pride and Dignity.

    I love you all!

I don’t know that it could be stated any better! What a great game. Honestly, as a Panda fan I had doubts coming into the game and major concern when the Birds took the lead, but the Pandas kept at it. The game was so well played, Highlands has so much skill top to bottom. I only know a handful of highlands players, the ones I know are such great young ladies! Congrats to all of their seniors on a great season and great careers.

After a game three weeks ago with 6 yellows and a red, I would love to know the stats on fouls in this game, I feel like neither team had more than 5, just a very well played game.

I feel for you @FrankNicodemus, it is a lot like last season in reverse, when the Panda faithful always felt like it was our game to win, until we didn’t.

Now the Pandas have to stay focused and pay this win off!

  8. Don’t want to steal @FrankNicodemusthunder but…great, very hotly contested game. Pandas came out firing and with a lot of energy. McGraw scored about 4 minutes in on a corner. IMO, NDA controlled the first 10 minutes. Much more even the next 30, Frannie Smith diced up the right side of the Panda defense for the equalizer for the birds with about 12 minutes left in the first. NDA did have a great shot from the top of the box hit the crossbar and dropped almost directly down, with about 5 minutes left in the half. Unfortunately for NDA much like last game the Birds really controlled the second half. Lots of very, very good opportunities, by my count the Birds had at least 4 crosses go across the face of the goal, inside the 6. Luckily, the panda defense and more specifically goalie Joelle Hentz was just good enough to hold off the constant pressure from the birds. The Pandas have to be better in the second half if these two see each other again.
From an intensity perspective, 5 yellows and 1 red were issued. Scary enough even with 6 total cards I am not sure the officiating crew ever had control of this match:(. I felt like they let so much go early that they were forced to issue cards to attempt to get it under control, but just my opinion.

Can you comment a little?  😇

Meaning, did it appear to be harsh, was it deserved (given, your lens is paNDA centric), etc?  Straight reds are usually pretty clear-cut, in my experience, but your post lead me to believe that maybe this one could have been a yellow...or maybe I read between the lines incorrectly.

Refereeing is a hard and thankless job, hence the shortage. The ref was in the right position, maybe 10 yards from the play. I share your assessment of straight red cards. I feel both fan bases would have been comfortable playing 11 on 11 for the entire game.

  10. Well contested game, with momentum in waves. NDA scored on a corner knapke to woeste about 3 minutes in. NDA Also had a point blank shot off the post at the 10 minute mark. NDA controlled the possession and field for the first 20 minutes. Then things changed, for the next 10-15 minutes Assumption looked faster, more technical and took control, scoring the equalizer with about 15 minutes left in the half. With 5 minutes left in the half, Robertson for NDA earned a foul in the box (tripping) resulting in a PK. Woeste converted the PK, NDA up 2-1 at the half. The start of the second was pretty even, very competitive both teams with an opportunity or two with no result. About 12 minutes into the half, an Assumption striker was called for an intentional dangerous play and given a red card. No comment on the call. NDA had several opportunities playing up 1, but couldn’t convert. With about 15 left Assumption made a great transition run and converted a 1 v 1 with on the goalie to tie the game at 2 all. Great work by the rockets playing down 1. Pandas scored the game winner with about 7 minutes left on a goal by Lenihan, assisted by Robertson. That’s how it ended. Overall good game by both teams but definitely a bit of controversy unfortunately.

  11. The score was pretty indicative of the game. Highlands scored about 2 minutes in on a misplayed ball back by NDA. NDA tied it with about 15 minutes left in the first. Highlands regained the lead about 3 minutes later on a shot at the top of the box. NDA had a nice chance to even it with about 5 minutes left in the first but hit the post. First half I would say Highlands had a slight advantage in possession and opportunities. Second half was heavily controlled if not dominated by Highlands. It was 3-1 within 10 minutes then 4-1 about 5 minutes later. Highlands was quicker, more technical and far more physical (in the right way.) they were by far the better team. Work to do for the Pandas over the next two weeks.

  12. Very well played and competitive match,  both teams have their share of solid players. The Rockets goalie was tremendous. I’d guess 12-15 saves including a PK. The lone goal was a sky ball from 30+ yards out, bounced, the Panda keeper tried to tap it over the goal. It hit the cross bar and dropped in. As a Panda fan it was a tough way to lose, but NDA gets to play the Rockets again next week. Good luck to both teams the rest of the week and season!

Notre Dame comes away with the win in the district seeding game.  The lone goal of the game was scored by Kate Lenihan with :56 left in the first half.  It was another great game by Klaiss in the goal.  HC had a hard time scoring without Hoffman up top. They are going to need to figure out a way to put the ball in the back of the net. They were 2-1 on a week with Ryle Campbell County and NDA giving up a combined one goal, so not a bad start.

Thanks for the coverage, sorry that I missed the game sounds like a good one. If you can share, what happened with Ivy? Hoping nothing serious and she will be back on the pitch soon. Good luck to the Indians for the rest of the season!
