I get baseball rankings are almost impossible to compile, but it would be tough to have a statewide top 25 and have no 9th Region teams represented. The 9th is one of the state's most populous areas and the team's have done very well in the state tourney in recent years. Sounds like that oversight is being corrected.

Prep baseball report caters heavily all areas of KY except NKY, so not surprised by it taking a little longer to pick up on NKY teams. It goes back to their business being focused on running showcases and tournaments in the summer which typically don’t draw much from NKY, as teams in NKY typically gravitate towards summer tournaments across the river or elsewhere.

Dude, you are so wrong on this. What schools? The % of kids who lands offers that early is so small in football. COVID absolutely decimated this class if you were a mid/low D1 level prospect. Those kids are encouraged to go to the schools camp for first hand evaluations. Can offers come without that?  Sure. But most assuredly not just from film. I have seen the most bizarre requests this year. No mention of grades, but how big are hands, and exact measurements please. Don’t care what position you are now, we want you for “x”. No film to study there is there? Lol. Point is this year our entire world was thrown off its axis. Can’t blame any kid, and I know plenty in NKY, who would benefit from coming back and doing just that. Plus, who wouldn’t want to relive being 17/18? Agree to disagree on this one bud.

Not blaming any kid for wanting to try, never said that. However, go to any of the football recruiting sites and look at the huge number of kids getting offers after their soph and junior seasons, it’s really common. It’s actually more un likely for someone to earn their first offer to an FBS school during/after their senior season, but obviously still does at times, especially for MAC and similar type schools. I hope it works out for any kid who comes back for a 5th year, just think most of the 2021 class would have already had offers after soph/junior seasons if they were at the FBS level.

Gotta keep in mind that not only were there no camps to audition last summer, but also that the NCAA already granted extra year eligibility to their players. Doesnt matter how much tape you have to show, its Simple math. Less scholarships available which meant a Mr. Kentucky football ends up a PWO.  How is that fair to him, or any one these talented mid/low D1 talents settling for PWO and NAIA scholarships?  Rolls downhill folks.  If ya didnt see this coming, youve been sleeping the last year......  Just my opinion.

I hope you’re right and he gets some offers if he chooses to come back. But again, many schools start offering kids after sophomore and junior year, which was not impacted by COVID at all. Many kids do receive D1 offers just based off of film as well, as camps have just now started back up. He is obviously really talented, however, its really hard to get a D1 football offer, I believe the number is roughly 1% of high school football players.

When he came to Cov Cath, I thought there was more excitement about him as a TE in football than as a basketball player.

He was definitely billed as a primary basketball player when coming to CCH. I remember seeing class of 2023 hoops prospect rankings back then and him being a top 50 national prospect, don’t know if that is still the case.

Last time he played football was 8th grade I believe.

He’s one of the few kids I see that benefit from this happening. Low-Mid D1 kid who could’ve absolutely benefited from summer camps last year and would probably be at a different school in my opinion if he would’ve had his summer to prove himself. The Low-Mid could become a Mid-High if he stays.

I’m sort of torn on this. It would be great if he came back and earned a D1 offer for himself, and obviously well worth it. On the other hand, he was a 3 year starter for three full seasons with extended playoff runs in each. That’s at least 40+ games of tape colleges watched and decided not to offer. At this point, would colleges think, you are who you are as a player? Hope the best for him either way.

After the game, the CovCath radio broadcast team said that they saw Vieth down on the court holding his leg in pain.  Has anyone heard any updates to that observation by the CCH radio team?

Nothing wrong with him at all. He was up jumping up and down celebrating after being on the floor for a minute, per several at the game, so should be good to go for next game. Maybe a cramp??

Because beating Cov Cath is such a ridiculous thought. Ha. Come on man. The talent is probably about even going into this year. Y’all had D1 freaks for some years there, those guys make your average players seem like studs (because of double teams and such).  You could see that some last year but this year you don’t have the QB with 3 years of experience.

Also Eddie has never coached against Sphire at Highlands. Rivalry game. The lowly highlands fans request permission to cheer for the birds vs colonels. Please oh please is it ok?

It’s also a nothing to lose game for Highlands. New coach, haven’t beat them in a while. We know we’re not supposed to win. I just think the talent gap is gone and the birds win.

Look, I think HHS will be better next season, I hope they are better, just my opinion that jumping to 9-1 next year seems unrealistic, but have at it!. Just not sure where this idea that there is no longer any talent gap came from..... what would lead someone to believe that? HHS 5-6 record last year? The 42-0 loss at CCH last Oct? The 17 point playoff loss to CCH? The blowout loss to Cooper last season? I'm sure the talent level will even out at some point, but to say it's already happened is nuts.

Speed kills! We NEED speed. So we will see.

Speed is great, we had plenty last year at the WR spot, just didn’t get the ball them/ catch it consistently. The RB spot is another story, though we did have injuries there this past season that was a factor. And I think Zion will be a big lift on the outside next year. If the Rodriquez kid has that level of speed I’m sure he’ll play some wr, I’ve heard good things about him. But the TE in addition to catching passes actually blocks more often, going up against DL and LB’s. I think earlier in this or another thread someone said the kid is 6’2” and 160lbs.  Sullivan, Jones, and Wilson are all 6’2” or taller and all over 215lbs.

I agree. I am close to the incoming Junior and Sophomore class, and as much as I think of that Frosh class I don't see anyone taking TE snaps from Wilson or Sullivan....they are both men.

I agree. And to be clear, my point isn’t to take anything away from the frosh class. With being close with  parents of several Juniors to be, there was a lot of high hopes of this years several sophs starting and getting a lot of playing time... which led to some unhappy parents once they realized how tough it is to play significant minutes as a underclassmen at CCH.  Obviously it can and does happen at times, as with Jones this year, but is by no means a given.

He's a nice athlete. My guess is you'll see him and Benke on the outside and Zion in the slot with some younger guys rotating in a bit and Rodriguez at TE (even though they play a bunch of guys there like Jones, Wilson and Sullivan). I am a BIG fan of that group for whoever ends up at QB.

Your saying the Rodriquez kid is going to start over the other 3 TE’s from last year that return? From reading some of these posts I think there is some highly unrealistic expectations that the many Soph’s to be will starting next year. That’s not to take away from anyone from this years Freshman team, but it’s a big jump, especially size wise.

Disagree. CCH beat Beechwood early in the year by a last second FG. I believe Beechwood was playing at a different level at the end of the year and would have beat CCH in a rematch if it was played later.

And CCH was missing several starters vs. Beechwood they had back at years end that would have made a big difference. Don’t think would have been closer than two scores. There is a pretty big talent/size gap between the two teams as well. Plus, watching Beechwood live against LCA in the champ game, they didn’t really seem to be playing at a super high level.

probably will just have to agree to disagree. Great season for Beechwood either way.

Good catch. Stats updated last night after that post. Hergott finished the season at completion percent of 73.2, #5 all time in KY history.

Is this even a debate? It is lopsided when you add up all the stats (historic state record level completion percent; 2,500 yards passing; 1,000 yards rushing) plus a state title and title game MVP. What justification can anyone make this year for any player other than Hergott as Mr. Football?

I think Hergott is obviously a great player and worthy of the award. Given that there is no stated criteria for the award, those voting may consider other things than someone with the best stats, such as competition the player has faced, Interest receiving from the next level, etc.

Plus it may hurt him having played poorly in the champ game, though I don’t think it should given the body of work over the season.

I thought LCA would go for 2. If they had made the kick to force 2OT LCA would have had to get the ball first in 2OT. I see both teams likely scoring and then Beechwood going for 2 and the win like they did vs West Carter last week. That would be advantage Beechwood with Hergott having the ball in his hands and 1 play to win it.
In LCA’s defense they do have a great kicker snd had out scored Beechwood by 14 down the stretch so maybe wanted the game to simply continue into a 2nd OT.

Agree here. Beechwood hadn’t stopped #20 for LCA for less than 3 yards all day.

I thought Nally was ok. Felix was better and I bet we’re better at RB next year with Geisler and Collins a year older plus Leen.

On the DB’s, Zion was our best player back there as a sophomore. A full year of him playing makes a big difference.

Zion will be a beast for sure. Sanfoss really stepped up at corner this year and should be even better next year.

Jones was plenty fast at LB, made a lot of plays all over the field  plus he’s big enough to hold up against runs up the middle.

I believe Dickhaus and Wilson could have made even more impact if we played a 4-3. Plus you wouldn’t depend on two MLB to cover all the way to the sideline at times. In our current scheme the D lineman never truly pass rush. When QB pressure does happen it’s typically because the QB holds the ball to long or a coverage is solid, as their first goal is to occupy the o line. They rarely ever just line up outside the tackle and rush the QB.

I would love to agree, but we were awful at some spots last year. Unless you were behind Dickhaus, if you couldn’t get on the field last year, that’s a bad sign. IMO Wilson is the only guy that moves the needle in the senior class (I think there are 3 needle movers in the junior class).  Maybe Sullivan gets there, but he needs to get way more athletic this off-season. The lineman are solid, but no one else really stands out on the perimeter.

For example, Geisler was the best running back when he played against LC. It’s no coincidence he’s doing kickoff return as a freshman, he’s going to be the lead back next year.

Geisler is good, don't get me wrong.  Nally was likely the best RB this season, he was battling a concussion at one point and then a groin or hammy injury the second half of the year so they greatly limited him, especially on O and had him play mostly LB.

Jones stood out to me at LB and will likely continue to progress moving forward. Sullivan is really good covering a couple gaps, but can struggle when asked to sprint to the sideline to cut off a rb.

Lot's of injuries as well. 3 of the 4 DB's that started on Friday night were not the starters at the beginning of the year due to injury. I believe the safety, #26, was the 3rd man up, and filled in decently well. Two of those injured DB's also were starting WR's at the beginning of the year.

This may be for a different discussion, but the defensive strategy was not great for the group of players on the field. They run the same 3-3 stack every year, which is specifically designed for the D line to eat up blocks so the LB's can run free and make plays. However, we didn't have MM and Felix back there this year, and our D Line was by far the strength but were more limited due to the scheme.

Coaches like to have their defensive scheme, but the kids on the field don't always fit it perfectly.

I believe it was a mixture of CCH’s great D-Line and poor play calling by BG.  Their defense will continue to make them title contenders in the coming years.

The D Line of CCH was by far the strength of the unit. They have dealt with numerous injuries throughout the season and didn't have but half the games with them all healthy. Even on Friday one of them was playing with a stress fracture in the lower back per the broadcast.

I did think it was odd that BG didn't try to throw the ball down the field more. When teams have had success against CCH D it has been attacking the DB's down the field.
