Carson Williams and Larry Bird

My point was Freeman Williams, skinny guard, hardly recruited out of high school, leads nation in scoring, ends up in NBA. Better than EVERY player UK had in 1978! -

Thank you for the great example. The keyboard musclemen on this forum will shut up on that one with Steph! -

I wish some of the posters on BGP were here right now to have seen the second slam! Wow! -

Larry was 6-8, 185-ish as a senior in high school. He was a great shooter and passer, tenacious rebounder and winner. Nowhere near the athletic ability of Carson, nor nowhere near as strong. Larry, I think, was 6-9 or 6-10 by the time he reached the NBA. No one worked at their game like Larry Bird. Not saying Carson will ever be in his league in the NBA, but as a prepster Carson is very similar in the way they dominate games. Too bad some of these posters just want to make fun of people and the kids we try to promote. Most never saw Larry in high school, at least I did. -

I saw Freeman Williams from Portland State in 1977 drop 42 on UK in Rupp Arena. And I was on one of the coaching staffs that night. Top that! -

Good points. As far as rebounds, Carson's team is sometimes forced to play opponents that slow the tempo to keep the score down, fewer possessions. Hard to get boards at a 21.0 pace with few possessions. The night I saw Larry Bird in high school the score was like 97-90 and both teams ran from start to finish. Different era now, coaches play too much stall ball and keep away. -

Thank you, well put. Most of these posters I have noticed just love to hate on certain parts of the state. Lack of vision, and many lack of ever playing a sport at a high level, complicates it for them. -

Heading over the watch Owen County and North Oldham game. If you want to make an intelligent comment about Carson, there should be plenty of seats tonight to watch him. -

Do you have a family? Do you know Carson's background and history? Do you know why he wanted to stay close to his home? When you find out, maybe you will not make such a comment. -

They got a big steal. Just like Indiana State when Larry decided to say adios to IU and Coach Knight. -

Carson should have been recruited by UK and U of L. Duke actually sent him letters, but he did not want to play that far away if they had offered him. Larry Bird also left IU because it was too big and the head coach at IU was a complete jerk. -

We will see five years from now. And, yes, I know I'm right about Rex as a high schooler. A 2-3 zone was his kryptonite! -

No one knows what his future will bring. As a high school player, he is ever bit as good as Larry Bird. That is what I said. I also said I believe he will be drafted into the NBA after his senior year. Now, will he be as good as Larry Bird in the NBA? Probably not. Will he be as good as some of the supposed HS All-Americans (Harrison twins!!!!) in college? He will be better than those two in my opinion. -

He should be Mr. Basketball without a doubt. There are other good players, none like Carson. -

Yes. Rex had one thing on his mind: shooting and dunking. He was great at both. He also cost his team a chance to win a state title because of his inability to play unselfishly. Even at UK, he never led them to anything other than an early exit in the NCAA, and then he bolted before the scandal rocked UK with Sutton. -

So you did not. And it is not unfair. Let it play out five years and we will see. -

If you have watched Carson play as many times as I have, you would see the similarities with Larry Bird as a high schooler and in college. I think Carson is BETTER than Rex Chapman as a senior in school. I coached against Chapman and he was great, but Carson is a more complete player. -

I said high school. Carson is just as good as Larry was in high school. I didn't say he will be an NBA Hall of Famer, just as a prepster he is on the same level. Small high schools, unselfish, on another level from other high school players. Just like Larry. -

As a high school player? Absolutely. I saw Larry in high school. I did not say NBA Larry Bird. Did you see Larry play in high school? -
Back in the 1970s Springs Valley High School in Indiana had a player who went on the be the best in the state. His name was Larry Bird. I saw Larry play once in high school and he put up like 44 points and 21 rebounds. He could also block shots. I see a lot of that same player in Carson Williams at Owen County. Carson is actually much stronger than Larry was in high school and jumps higher. Both had high basketball IQs, unselfish, and team players. Carson works at his game 24/7, and his outside shooting will continue to get better as he matures. I believe five years from now people in this state are going to look at NKU and see a lot of similarities to Indiana State after Larry left the asylum called IU. I think they might be talking Carson Williams being NKU's first NBA player.

North Oldham vs Owen county

Carson Williams will get 30+ points and Owen County coasts in this one. My guess is he will also have dunk or two, plus 10+ rebounds. -
Predictions for the Sweet 16?
OldhamOldie replied to Indiana Patrick's topic in KY Boys Basketball (High School)
I agree about Carson. His game is at another level. I would like to see how the UK and U of L coaches react if Carson leads Owen County to the state title. I can not believe neither program recruited a great instate player like Carson who is also a tremendous student. It is one reason I am having trouble staying a UK fan. They recruit supposed 5-star players like Skal and Briscoe, neither of whom are as good as Carson Williams. Just my opinion, and I hope Owen County gets to the Sweet 16.
