  1. Bishop Brossart High School announced today that Girls Head Basketball Coach Josh Grooms had officially resigned because of increased duties at Grant County High School where he teaches. The school has begun a search immediately and has named JV Coach Terry Bray as the interim head coach during the transition to the new coach. Those interested are asked to send their resumes to Athletic Director Mel Webster at mwebster@bishopbrossart.org. A select committee will review the applications and recommend a successor. Grooms was Head Coach at BBHS for one season posting a 14-11 record. The school hopes to name a successor in the next few weeks.
  2. The Lady 'Stangs fast pitch softball team jumped at the chance to play one of the 11th Region's top teams and pitchers Thursday evening in Frankfort, Ky. Western Hills though after five innings proved to be just that a top team. The now 18-11 team held the Lady 'Stangs to no baserunners through the first five innings while pitcher Des Barnes was striking out 8 and hurling a perfect game. Western Hills led 1-0. Things looked dire when Emily Schubert led off the bottom of the sixth. At one point seven straight Lady 'Stangs had struck out. Schubert coaxed a base on balls on a full count and reached first only to be hurt when the catcher attempted a pick off play. Schubert, for now, remained in the game as Maria Greis lined out to second and Natalie Woeste fanned to bring Paige Baynum to the plate with two out. Baynum launched a long double to left to score Schubert as Brossart tied the game on their first hit at 1-1. In the seventh, Lindsay Griffith opened with a single to rightcenter and was forced at second by a Jenna Bezold groundout. Molly Williams then popped up in the infield but the ball fell untouched and bounded away from the secondbaseman. When she attempted to throw to third to nail Bezold, Williams advanced to second with one out. Alicia Miller then popped to short and that brought up Chelsie Brewer. Brewer had entered the game replacing Schubert and was playing right with Woeste moving to short. Brewer drilled a hard grounder to short that was misplayed and Bezold scored from third with Williams moving to third. Moments later Designated Hitter Maria Greis also drilled one to short that was misplayed and suddenly the Lady 'Stangs led 3-1. Western Hills did not go quietly. After all, they had been undefeated at home in over a month and last lost there to Scott County 5-3 in April. Jane Herrod had a single and then Joan Cammuse drilled a one out double to right center in the bottom of the seventh to cut it to 3-2 with the tying run on second. Tes Barnes then lofted a fly to Brewer in right with Cammuse advancing on a tag to third. But hold on... Brossart appealed she had left to soon at second and the umpires agreed called her out ofr the games final out. Alicia Miller recorded her 20th win of the season and the Lady 'Stangs advanced to 23-6 on the year. They will now play Lloyd Friday at 6 PM in Erlanger. The team celebrated by munching on some home cooked french fries after the game. :deadhorse:
  3. Less than 24 hours before a hard line drive struck pitcher Alicia Miller in the left knee in the third inning of the semifinal game with Nicholas Co. The injury drew blood and Miller had to be carried from the field. Less than 24 hours later, with the help of the determination to help her team to the state tournament and the miracle of modern medicine at Christ Hospital, Miller came back to throw a complete game against nemisis Bracken County and come within one pitch of a shutout. She also gritted out two hits. The Lady 'Stangs are going to the Touchstone Energy All "A" State Tournament as 10th Region Champions once again. Northern Kentucky's Number 1 ranked team, beat Bracken County 4-2. They will play Middlesboro at 9 AM Saturday in Jeffersontown, Kentucky. They are now 21-4 on the season while Bracken falls to 15-11. The Lady 'Stangs came out swinging with Paige baynum opening play with a line shot double. She moved to third on a Nat Woeste scarifice and then rode home on a hard double by Lindsay Griffith. Jenna Bezold singled and then on a Molly Williams grounder to short Griffith was thrown out at the plate on a photo finish. Miller helped herself with a sharp single to drive home Bezold and it was 2-0. The game remained 2-0 til the 5th inning with greta pitching by Miller and superb defense by the Lady 'Stangs. A heads up play in the third caught Hannah Brough in a rundown erasing a possible run. Miller gritted thru five allowing just 4 singles. In the bottom of the fifth with two out and Krista Kennedy on second after a single and sacrifice, Griffith launched a shot over the fence in left field to give her team a seemingly comfortable 4-0 lead. However the Polar Bears had other ideas. Pitcher Sara Sticklen, a surprise starter, singled and then Alana Ahrens drilled one of the longest home runs in 10th Region history to right center. Suddenly it was 4-2 but it got worse. Hannah Haight beatout an infield single and so did Alicia Mains. Miller struck out Bella but Broguh reached on an error and the bases were loaded for Bracken with momentum going their way. Berry hit a one hopper to Molly Williams who alertly went home for a close forceout at home and then Miller coaxed Kaitlyn Meyer to ground to Emily Schubert who also alertly went to Krista Kennedy at third for the force and the Lady 'Stangs dodged a huge bullet. In the seventh Jackie Crawford grounded to "Chicken Wing" at third before Sticklen singled and Miller struck out Ahrens with the tying run on base. Moments later Miller grabbed a comebacker from Haight and tossed to Bezold to send the Lady 'Stangs to state. You gotta love it.
  4. Brossart advances to the Championship of the 10th Region All "A" beating Nicholas County easily 9-1. They will play Bracken Co. at 6:15 tonight. Brossart, the top ranked tema in Northern Kentucky is now 20-4.
  5. Stan Steidel called Julian Tackett and reported that the game is to be completed from the "point of suspension."
  6. :dancingpa The Lady ‘Stangs (17-3) were on a mission when they traveled to Scott High School Thursday night. When they beat Scott a week or so ago comments were made in the Enquirer by Scott that they should have won 1-0 following Brossart’s 3-1 win. In that game Brossart outhit the Lady Eagles 8-2 and Scott only had one baserunner after the second inning. The team wanted to show who was the best team without any question this time and took care of business beating Scott (8-11) in Taylor Mill 9-0 allowing the Lady Eagles only two hits again. Junior pitcher Alicia Miller (16-3) went the distance striking out 11 while helping herself with three hits. The lady ‘Stangs struck first in the second when Miller singled and was replaced by courtesy runner Maria Greis. Krista Kennedy’s liner to center plated Greis and it was 1-0. In the third Brossart knocked out starter Williamson (now 3-6) with a five run explosion. Lindsay Griffith opened with a hit followed by a walk to Jenna Bezold, Molly Williams plated one with a single and then Miller singled to load the bases. Emily Schubert plated one with a sharp sacrifice to first and then consecutive singles by Carmen Enzweiler and Kennedy plated runs as well. Paige Baynum comncluded the shock and awe with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0. Back they came in the fourth again. Sporting their new white helmets, Griffith singled again and went to third on a Bezold single. Williams hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Griffith and then and long double by Schubert made it 8-0. They tacked on the final run in the seventh when Schubert tripled and scored on another single by Enzweiler. The Lady ‘Stangs had completed their mission. In the junior varsity game in which Scott would only play three innings, Brossart scored one in the first when Lindsey Brossart scored on a Erin Franke hit and added three in the second on three errors, a walk and three passed balls. The final two runs raced home in the third on error, hit batter and two passed balls and wild pitches. So Brossart won 6-1 in three innings on one hit. Franke pitched well three hits and one run striking out four. They are now 9-5
  7. It wasn’t the most beautiful of games, but in the end the Lady ‘Stangs got the prize at the end of the rainbow….the top seed in the 37th District Tournament and the best shot of everyone making the 10th Region Tourney for the 20th consecutive year. The Lady ‘Stangs finished 5-0 in District seeding. The Lady ‘Stangs beat rival Campbell County 5-3 in the confines of Camel Field where it has always been a scary experience for Lady ‘Stang softball. They had many chances to make it a romp leaving ten runners on base. :dancingpa:ylsuper: It looked like Brossart would have an easy time scoring first when Lindsay Griffith walked with two out in the first and then stole second. She rode home easily on a Jenna Bezold double. Brossart added two more in the third on a home run by Griffith and another home run by Molly Williams. When they added a fourth in the fourth as Nat Woeste scored on a Paige Baynum double One of two hits) it looked like the game was over at 4-0. In the fourth though the Lady Camels came alive when Wolf stung a two out two strike home run to left to make it 4-2. Campbell added a third run in the sixth on an error and suddenly it was 4-3. In the top of the seventh, the Lady ‘Stangs opened with a walk to Bezold, and Alicia Miller reached on an error. Moments later Krista Kennedy lined one to right and it was 5-3. Miller pitched a great game limiting the Lady Camels to just three hits and took care of business blocking out the haunted vibes with two strikeouts and a harmless grounder to first. She had 8 strikeouts for the game. Brossart will now play Calvary or Silver Grove for a trip to the Region. A loss would have forced a coin flip between Brossart, Campbell and Scott for top seed. The junior varsity owed the Lady Camels after Campbell upset them in the Brossart JV Classic this past weekend. In the third inning with the game knotted at 1-1, the Lady ‘Stangs exploded for six runs to take a 7-1 lead. The big blow of the inning was a long home run by Chelsie Brewer to left. Erin Franke helped herself in the fifth during another 5 run explosion with a long triple. When the smoke cleared Brossart had run ruled Campbell Co, 13-3. Lindsay Brossart, Chelsie Brewer and Ashley Dellar had two rbis each, Franke had two hits and three rbis and Maria Greis two hits. The Lady ‘Stangs played solid defense and Erin Franke scattered 5 hits over five innings striking out 4.
  8. :dancingpa If a team ever deserved a nice four day break it is the Lady ‘Stangs varsity fast pitch team. They found another way to win among their bag of tricks on Wednesday beating previously undefeated St. Henry 1-0 in Erlanger. “We have seen our players this week battle through some nagging things…Miller has a sore back, Schubert a sore ankle and not feeling well, Riedeman a sprained ankle, Enzweiler a strained wrist, Baynum a sore foot, and some other minor things and on a day we didn’t hit well we found a way to keep winning that’s awesome,” said Mel Webster. Perhaps it is the grind of playing 17 games already (15-2 record) with not many games rained out, but on this day the offense was sputtering along with no score entering the seventh inning. Playing a relatively fresh St. Henry team (6-0) it was a great pitcher’s duel between St. Henry’s Maimie Salzer and Brossart’s Alicia Miller. While Miller allowed only three hits over seven innings for her 14th win, Salzer scattered 7 for the Lady ‘Stangs striking out 8. St. Henry’s lone real threat for the game was in the first when Jenn Hoff beat out an infield hit and got all the way to third with one out before Miller struck out Salzer and Cantrall the St. Henry three and four batters to end the inning. Salzer dodged bullets in the second when Brossart left the bases loaded and in the fifth when she snagged a Jenna Bezold rocket to the mound with two on. The game all came down to the top of the seventh inning. Paige Baynum led off with her second hit and was advanced to second by a nice clutch sacrifice by Emily Schubert. Lindsay Griffith followed with an infield hit. Up came the hero of Tuesday’s Scott game Jenna Bezold again but this time Salzer struck her out to make it two out and runners on second and third after Griffith stole second. It was now up to sophomore Molly Williams and she drilled a one hopper to third that bounced off the concrete-like infield over the thirdbaseman’s glove to drive home Baynum and make it 1-0. Griffith was waived home also and met the lady Crusader catcher Cantrall blocking the plate about 4 feet up the line. Griffith makes contact while the ball is rolling up the catchers arm and then she grabs it and applies the tag for the out. “In my opinion he was totally wrong,” pointed out Webster “The catcher can’t block the plate without possession of the ball and she didn’t have the ball when the first hit. Since the catcher was so far up the line it took away all options for the runner. She can’t slide, can’t get access to the plate and if she lowers her shoulder she is ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct.” Still the Lady ‘Stangs took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first and Miller, with the help of her defense, took it to the Lady Crusaders retiring Cantrall on a grounder to Krista Kennedy, coaxing Kirkwood to hop harmlessly to Bezold at first and then retiring Kremer on a nubber in front of the plate Griffith fielded and threw to Bezold for the final out. A three game winning streak, 15-2 record and Northern Kentucky’s Top Ranking is a good way to go into a rest period. The junior varsity team battled back from an 8-3 deficit to record a nice 13-8 win at St. Henry. More details on the JV Softball page.
  9. :ylsuper: Top ranked Bishop Brossart stayed hot beating their first two opponents in the Pete Noll Classic at Pendery Park Friday night. The Lady ‘Stangs topped Notre Dame Academy 17-1 in three innings and then came from behind to also smoke Louisville Presentation Academy 10-2. They will now play a tough North Oldham club at 1:30 Saturday. The Lady ‘Stangs enter Saturday’s play 11-1. In the other tourney game played Friday, Perkins (Sandusky, Ohio) shutout Simon Kenton 5-0. In the Notre Dame game Brossart only batted twice scoring 7 in the first and then 10 in the second after Notre Dame scored in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Molly Williams and Alicia Miller tied a school record by each having two hits in the same inning. Williams wound up going 3 for 3 and driving home 4 runs. Miller ended up 3 for 3. Both had doubles. Emily Schubert was 2 for 3. Overlal the Lady ‘Stangs banged out 13 hits. Miller combined with Erin Franke on the two hitter. The second game saw Brossart taking on Louisville Presentation Academy. The two teams hadn’t played since the old slow pitch days in 1997 in the Midwest Catholic Challenge. Brossart won that one. Presentation came out swinging and jumped out to a 2-0 lead on two hits, a bunt and a disputed call at the plate. In the bottom of the first, with the first two Lady ‘Stangs retired on comebackers to the pitcher, the “Big Green Machine” started coming back. Griffith singled hard and stole second base. Bezold drilled a hit to make it 2-1 and Williams sent fear into the rightcenterfield fence with a cannon shot to rightcenter scoring Bezold to tie it. Moments later Miller drilled a double by hustling and beating the throw with a good slide at second to give her team a 3-2 lead. They never trailed again. The Lady ‘Stangs defense was stingy not allowing a hit after inning one. Emily Schubert made three outstanding plays from deep short, Krista Kennedy made a play at third that got even applause from Brooks Robinson, Paige Baynum made a nice charging catch in center, and Lindsay Griffith gunned down Mary Gallegos in her attempt to steal second. Brossart had a textbook third. Schubert drew a nice walk and Griffith bunted her to second. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and then Bezold laid down a perfect bunt and Griffith scored on the throw to first. In the fourth, with one out, Kennedy reached on an error by the secondbaseman and then in one of the big hits of the night, Carmen Enzweiler faked the bunt and slapped a hard shot to right sending Kennedy to third. That opened the flood gates Woeste drilled one to center to score a run, Baynum almost decapitated the thirdbaseman with a line shot to left to knock in two more and then Griffith and Bezold added rbis to give them a 9-2 lead. They added one more in the sixth on a Schubert walk and hard base hit by Griffith to make it 10-2 before the time limit ended the game.
  10. :ylsuper: On the eve of the “Uncle Pete” Noll Invitational at Pendery Park, you have to believe Pete is looking down upon the Lady ‘Stangs approvingly as they begin their season 9-1, the top ranking in Northern Kentucky and beating some of the top teams in the state. Thursday was no exception as the Lady ‘Stangs rolled over Boone County 6-2 in a game that saw more clutch hitting, good pitching and solid defense. Brossart started a bit slowly against Boone’s Johnson. Her herky jerky motion was unique but in the third things started to come around for the Lady ‘Stangs starting with Lindsay Griffith’s first of three hits a sharp single to right. She moved to second after a Jenna Bezold comebacker to the mound. Molly Williams singled, Alicia Miller then reached base after being hit in the head and Krista Kennedy singled. Natalie Woeste then drilled a shot to right center plating two runs and suddenly it was 3-0. In the fifth the Lady ‘Stangs came right back with the rally being started again by Griffith with a single to right and a single by Bezold. Williams followed with an rbi single, Miller reached on an error and Krista Kennedy walked. Erin Holtz, pinch hitting, slapped the ball to the right side sending home Bezold. When the smoke cleared it was 6-0. Meanwhile Miller was cruising along scattering only four hits thru six innings but Boone mounted a mini comeback in the seventh scoring twice before the final batter was retired to secure a 6-2 win. Miller finished allowing one earned run and striking out 12 Lady Rebels. Brossart is now 9-1, Boone Co. 6-5. Uncle Pete would be proud.
  11. The Lady ‘Stangs of Bishop Brossart, on a day that saw the first Enquirer poll of the year Rank them Number 1 in Northern Kentucky, lived up to the billing by dominating 4th ranked Simon Kenton 7-0 on Wednesday evening. :ylsuper: Brossart, now 8-1, banged out a balanced attack and outhit the Lady Pioneers 11-2. Pitcher Alicia Miller won her 8th game hurling a two hitter and striking out five as the Lady ‘Stangs played solid defense and played a smart and solid offensive game. Miller was 3 for 3 in her spare time. In the second inning sophomore Molly Williams opened with a single and then scored from first on Miller’s single to right. They came right back in the third when Natalie Woeste and Paige Baynum lined hits to center and were sacrificed to second and third by Emily Schubert. Lindsay Griffith followed with a sharp double to right and suddenly it was 3-0 Brossart. The ‘Stangs came right back with two more in the fifth as Schubert singled and stole second then scoring on a Griffith single. Bezold then scored Griffith with a solid shot to up the ante to 5-0. Brossart wasn’t through yet. In the sixth Miller helped her own cause drilling a double to deep right and was replaced by courtesy runner Erica Riedeman. Riedeman advanced to third on a Krista Kennedy sacrifice and then scampered home on a grounder to short by Woeste. Moments later Baynum drilled a single up the middle to score Kennedy and make it 7-0. Miller then closed the door in the seventh for her fourth shutout of the season. The win over SK Came a week after Simon beat Clark Co. 1-0. Clark is the only team to hand top ranked Brossart a loss in 2010. Simon Kenton escaped with a 4-2 JV win. Brossart was led by Maria Greis who reached base all three times with two hits and a base on balls.
  12. From http://www.mustangathletics.org website It was only the second game of the season, but already a key NKAC Conference game for the Lady ‘Stangs and Highlands fastpitch teams. In the end though Brossart prevailed this time 5-1. When Brossart scored first the thought was maybe things would be easy. What they found was a vastly improved Highlands team that should muster some big wins during the season. Paige Baynum drilled a single to center on the opening pitch and then advanced to second on a Lindsay Griffith single. Moments later Jenna Bezold grounded a ball to short, and on the misplay, Baynum scored making it 1-0 Lady ‘Stangs. Meanwhile, pitcher Alicia Miller was breezing along retiring the Lady ‘Birds first 9 batters. In innings two thru five though the Lady ‘Stangs gave them an opening by leaving five runners on base. In the fourth inning for Highlands Devin Bessler hit into a forceout. Senior Alex Sorrell who seemingly has played since the Reagan Administration, drilled a double in the right field corner to tie it at 1-1. The game remained 1-1 til the top of the sixth when Jenna Bezold sent a scalding dog double to the fence in center for a double. She advanced to third on a Molly Williams grounder bringing up Miller. Miller then took matters into her own hands drilling a Groneck fastball over the fence in right for her first career homerun and suddenly it was 3-1 Lady ‘Stangs. Krista Kennedy drew a walk and then after she was sacrificed to second Erin Holtz was brought to the plate as a pinch hitter and smacked a two strike double to right to plate Kennedy. Natalie Woeste returned to run for Holtz at first, stole second and then Baynum drilled her third hit of the night to center to score Woeste. Miller then retired the last six batters for the second win. It was a nice win and a solid team effort with good defense. The Lady ‘Stangs are now 2-0 and have scored 18 while allowing just one run. :dancingpa
  13. From The http://www.mustangathletics.org website: Junior left hander Alicia Miller opened the 2010 season with a convincing performance in a 13-0 Bishop Brossart win over the Grove. She faced 16 batters in five inning striking out 13 and tossing a no hitter in her first game. A second inning base on balls that prevented a perfect game. The Bishop Brossart offense was patient in the first inning and used timely hits when the pitches were in the strike zone. Paige Baynum, Emilky Sanker and Lindsay Griffith all reached base on walks before first baseman Jenna Bezold drilled a bases loaded hit to make it 2-0 Brossart. Molly Williams followed with a single to drive home a run and then stole second.Miller walked, Krista Kennedy was hit by a pitch and then Carmen Enzweiler followed with a two run single up the middle. Natalie Woeste singled and then Baynum plated Enzweiler on a fielders choice before Schubert singled to right to give Brossart a 9-0 first inning advantage. They would add two in third and one each in the fourth and fifth innings for the easy win. Emily Schubert, Molly Williams and Carmen Enzweiler all were 2 for 3 with two rbis. Miller and Griffith added triples. In the junior varsity game the Lady ‘Stangs stopped the Trains right in their tracks with a 14-0 win over basically their varsity team as pitcher Erin Franke scattered 2 hits over two innings and struck out three while Mary Kay Reilly slammed the door with a 1-2-3 inning in the third. Franke was also the hitting star with a 3 for 3 day that included a double triple and two rbis. Cassie Gillespie drove home 3 runs and Jenna Dawn, Marissa Bezold and Lindsay Brossart two each. Erica Reideman clubbed a long second inning homerun. Taylor Hardy and Chelsie Brewer had triples for the Lady ‘Stangs.
  14. It's not really the Coaches its usually the Officials Association that requests them. Officals who are involved with big calls are often approached in the public at dinner or stores and comments made to them because in the Region etc every call is magnified.
  15. Bishop Brossart opens their season today with a District Game at Silver Grove
  16. I would think the top 5 teams this year in the 10th will be in some order Montgomery Co., Clark Co. Harrison Co, Bishop Brossart and maybe Bracken Co.:ylsuper:
  17. If your daughter plays High School i'd check with your school coach first. Nothing can be more confusing as haing two different people showing you how to hit.
