I do have a sheet that tracks the week-to-week results for all of the teams in the NKY Freshman League, yep. I usually try to put out the first update around Week 3, so I'm planning to ideally get that posted on Monday. Scott and Walton-Verona both have true freshman teams, but they aren't official members at current in the NKY Freshman League, so I don't typically track their teams in this thread, and only include their scores when they play teams from the NKY Freshman League. Boone County has had a freshman team in years past, but currently their program has a "froshmore" squad playing a mixed schedule against a combination of some JV & freshman teams; I'm about 99% sure that Newport Central Catholic also fields a froshmore squad instead of a true freshman team or a true JV team. I believe that the remaining NKAC football programs (Bellevue, Bishop Brossart, Covington Holy Cross, Dayton, Holmes, Lloyd Memorial, Ludlow, and Newport) only field varsity and JV squads. As far as rankings go for this league, we just try to go by overall wins/losses...generally along the line of the way they determine which teams play in which game during championship week. It's been fortunate that typically game outcomes have stayed straightforward enough that there are pretty cut and dry "rankings" that can be determined from season records, with head-to-head results used to back those up when needed. In past years (we're talking more like 10+ years ago) before the coaches in the league all kinda sat down and formally organized how to determine everything, there were some debates that took place among some teams about who should play in the championship (again, in many years the freshman league wasn't really even officially conducted much as an official league back then), but regardless, that's not really much of a common thing as it stands.

The series record stands at a 45 wins to 7 in Covington Catholic's favor. Eddie Eviston has a 14-0 record against Dixie, including three straight wins over the Red Colonels during his three-year tenure as head coach at Newport Central Catholic. The last time Dixie Heights won a varsity football game against Covington Catholic, Heath Ledger, Charlton Heston and Evel Knievel were all still alive and the High School Musical 2 soundtrack was the #1 selling album in the US. With that game taking place 19 years ago, it's also entirely possible (likely?) that there aren't any current players on the football teams from either school who were even alive yet when the Red Colonels last won the Battle for Colonel Highway. Currently in his 12th season as head football coach at Cov Cath, Eddie Eviston has notched 11 straight wins over Dixie Heights, averaging 40.0 points per game to Dixie's average of 12.27 points per game over the same period. Dixie head coach Pat Burke, currently in his 4th season on the job in Edgewood, is 0-3 against Cov Cath. An interesting piece of trivia for the week: As a 2005 Covington Catholic grad, Pat Burke has never been a part of the victorious team in the Dixie/Cov Cath varsity football series. During Burke's sophomore, junior, and senior years Covington Catholic, Dixie won 3 straight games over Cov Cath....the only time in 52 total games played in the series that Dixie has notched three-straight wins. Cov Cath comes into this week's game with a 2-1 record, with big wins over their first two Kentucky opponent and a big loss to their one out-of-state opponent. They beat Ryle 50-6 in Week 1, lost 56-20 to Elder (OH) in Week 2, and beat Simon Kenton 42-7 this past Friday. With a significant number of new starters on the scene, the team appears to be developing well, with junior QB Dylan Courtney averaging 217 yards passing per game, Kiyan Miller averaging over 80 yards rushing per game, and Jason Fedor averaging over 65 yards receiving per game. Miller's and Fedor's numbers are all the more impressive when you add in the sheer number of skills players that Cov Cath has had with their hands on the ball this year - 11 total rushers, 9 different receivers, and a total of 6 different players with touchdowns thus far in the course of 3 games played. Dixie comes into this week's game with a 0-3 record on the season, beginning with a 42-13 loss to Simon Kenton in Week 1, then a 42-13 loss to Badin (OH), and a 41-3 loss to Beechwood this past Friday. Thus far in the season offensive production has been a real problem for the Red Colonels, who with a combined 212 total yards offense in their first two games. With 6 touchdowns allowed per game on the defensive side of things, there's a lot for the team to improve upon all around. So...what are your predictions for this week? Should fans on either side be thinking about "the transitive property of football scores" with Dixie losing to Simon Kenton by 29 and Simon Kenton losing to Cov Cath by 35?

People in NKY may be a little more familiar with the disease after the attention brought to it by Mount St. Joseph University basketball player Lauren Hill who lost a very well documented battle with DIPG in early 2015, or from Grace White, daughter of Covington Catholic alum Scott White. My wife was telling me about this the other day, and it's a little alarming. DIPG (diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma) is a rare and super-aggressive form of brain cancer, almost exclusively found in children, that's essentially a death sentence when diagnosed. Mortality rate 2 years from diagnosis is 90% and by 5 years that's up to 98%+. Nationwide, there are usually somewhere around 200-225 active cases of patients diagnosed with DIPG in the United States, and at any given time, state-wide, Kentucky has an average of 2 active cases of DIPG. That diagnosis number fits right in line with population base, with Kentucky residents representing 1.35% of the US citizens. As of early July of this year, though, active cases of DIPG in Kentucky rose to a total of 10, and there have evidently been two more added since then. Additionally, the majority of those cases are in individuals living local to Corbin, Williamsburg, and the surrounding vicinity of Whitley County - which is notable since there have never been any environmental or hereditary causes identified to contribute to the development or occurrence of DIPG. One of the other notable facts about the very unusual bump in cases is the fact that 2 cases are in adults. Adults typically represent 2% of all diagnosed cases of DIPG, with the remaining 98% all occurring in individuals 18 and under. The Kentucky Department of Health announced in July that the CDC is investigating the situation.
