Buckhorn 53 Hazard 46

Recommended Posts

Buckhorn defeated Hazard 53-46 to win the championship of he 54th District. 6'6 senior Matt Day scored 32 points.

District titles are not something that happens to Buckhorn very often, with Perry Central, Hazard, and Leslie County also in the district.

I'm proud of Buckhorn. The school is only 18 miles from Booneville where I live in Owsley County, and many of their residents do their banking and business in Booneville because it is closer to them than Hazard. So Owsley Countians feel a close relationship to the Buckhorn community.

They're a small school that has worked extremely hard to bring these boys along from elementary school to this point. They've got their worked cut out if they are going to win the region on Knott Central's floor, but they're very capable. They beat Knott County Central just last week by 2 points at Buckhorn. Breathitt County and Letcher Central are also possibilties to make it to Rupp, but Knott Central has to be the clear favorite with Perry Central not in it.

Professor, always enjoy all of your comments and stories about teams, their communities, etc. in this district and region, please keep them up when you post. You said in an earlier post that Hazard had an outside chance, but were young. Could you tell me more about the Hazard squad this season, their Coach, etc. Also, why did Buckhorn and PCC not play during the regular season? Do they ever? Always enjoy the soap opera and behind the scene stories in this region, thanks.

I've seen Hazard play a couple of times this year. They have 1 senior, 3 juniors, 5 sophomores, 3 freshmen, and an 8th grader. They would have had a much stronger team this year but 3 players (Olinger, Back, and Spencer) decided not to play, and I think 2 of them (maybe all) would have been starters. Olinger and Back didn't play because they wanted to concentrate on football (Hazard won the Class A state title last year), at least that's what I was told by a relative of Olinger.

Hazard's coach is Al Hollon. He played at MC Napier back in the late '70s or early '80s, and coached at that school, and later at Perry Central. He guided Perry Central to the state tournament several times, but about 6 years ago took the job at county/city rival Hazard. The Bulldogs have made several state tournament appearances under Hollon.

As to why Perry Central and Buckhorn didn't play this year, I have no clue. Buckhorn is part of the Perry County School District. The superintendent, John Paul Amis, is a former player and coach at Buckhorn. He coached the Wildcats to their first and only state tournament appearances in 1987-88 and 1988-89. Maybe another BGP member from that area may know the answer.

I do know that Perry Central and Hazard stopped scheduling about 2 years ago, mainly because the rivalry simply became too intense, plus a few other circumstances and differences. Those 2 definitley do not send Christmas cards to one another. Hopefully in a few years things will cool down and they will resume playing. It is a huge money game for both schools, maybe their biggest gates of the year.

When does the 14th draw?

They drew this afternoon at 2:00. I believe the tournament begins Wedsday and Thursday, with the semifinals next Monday and the finals Tuesday.

Buckhorn vs Wolfe County

Powell County vs Letcher County Central

Knott County Central vs Hazard

Breathitt County vs Estill County
