Augusta 59 Bracken County 46

Recommended Posts

Final from Brooksville last night. I was posting updates until my phone died. My apologies to those who may have been following.

Atmosphere was electric last night--everything you want to see in a District Tournament game. Both the Augusta & Bracken faithful came out in droves for what ended up being a very good game, for the most part. Was a nip-and-tuck affair until the latter part of the 4th quarter. Bracken started the game in a Diamond-and-one defense, with Grant Crawford chasing Bach. Augusta seemed flustered by it in the first half & I thought Crawford did a good job defending a good player. Panthers ended up leading by 1 at the break.

Third quarter was again back-and-forth. At one point, Bracken had a small lead & had opportunities to increase that lead, but missed some chip shots down low--4 missed buckets by my count in the 2nd half alone. Polar Bears were getting some really open looks from underneath the basket out of a high-low offensive set, but they didn't always convert to points. That was an absolute killer for a team that struggles to put the ball in the basket.

Start of the 4th saw the score at 37 apiece. Appleman from Augusta hits a 3 to open the 4th & Austin Ray answers at the other end to tie the game at 40. Augusta scores the next five points & Bracken answers with a bucket to make it 45-42. On the next Panthers possession, Augusta gets an and-one on what I felt was a really bad call (should have been a charge; not a block IMO). Lead extends to 48-42 & Augusta outscores Bracken 11-4 the rest of the way. If memory serves me right, Augusta failed to connect from 3 in the first half, but I could be wrong. In the second half, they started hitting from the perimeter & that really turned the tide. The Kelsch kid, in particular, hit a couple of big second half shots to give the Panthers some breathing room.

It was basically what I expected. At halftime, I told a friend seated with me that Augusta would pull away. It happened much later than I expected, but they're just a better team. The game was certainly winnable for Bracken County, but those missed bunnies & some costly turnovers really hurt their chances. Congrats to the Augusta team & fans. If my Polar Bears aren't in the region, I pull for the Panthers. Coach Hinson is a good friend & a quality coach. I love how his team plays & I love how the Augusta faithful support their squad.

Hate that the Polar Bears season ended last night. Coach Persinger is also a very good friend & those kids gave tremendous effort last night. Austin Ray hit some big shots, Crawford played what I felt was solid defense, but just not enough offensive firepower to advance. It was an especially sad night for Dwayne Hamilton & Josh Cummins, who suited up for the last time in their high school careers. I don't know Hamilton all that well, but he plays hard. Cummins is as good a kid as they come. I wish both of them the best & it's been pleasurable to watch them over the years.

Congrats to Augusta & best of luck tomorrow night & in next week's region! Randy will be pulling for you! :thumb:

Very well said, RP. I consider both of these coaches good friends and hated to see one of them lose. Similar to RP,I don't know the Hamilton kid at all,but wish him the best. I have had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with Josh Cummins. The things Josh does off the court are amazing. His involvement in the community and with his classmates ( which I won't get into, because I know he'd rather have those remain in the background) make me proud to call him a friend.

Back to basketball...congrats to Coach Hinson and his guys...best of luck against Mason.

People often tell me that I'm "very kind, sweet, positive and politically correct." Then my alarm goes off & I start my day.

mcpapa would get a kick out of this.

Bracken played with more energy than earlier in the season. Played extremely well in the 1st half using some bench. There was no substitutions made the 2nd half which in many eyes cost them the game. Not being negative, being realistic.

Backcourt reserves made a couple of costly turnovers in the first half when Augusta implemented a full court press. I like those kids a lot, but they just weren't capable of dealing with the Augusta pressure as Cummins & Crawford were.

Fite was decent. He's athletic, but very raw. Augusta rallied in the first half when Bracken's big men got hampered with fouls.

WOW, sorry we must have been at different games, and Fite was the worst sub of the night, but played the most minutes. Talked to a lot of people since the game and your the only one with this story to tell.
