Certified Athletic Trainers : What's a Valid Excuse?

Featured Replies

Do most services have enough staff to handle it?

It would have to be overtime, and take a great deal of cooperation from the school and the EMS agency.

I agree that athletic trainers are a necessity, especially with football and concussions. However, this new legislation being brought forward by Julian Carroll is absolutely ludicrous. Supposedly, it states that all coaches must be trained to not only identify but treat concussions. Under no circumstances would I want a coach treating my child for a concussion. All of America saw how a collegiate coach at a D1 school treated a concussion a few years ago at Texas Tech. A player that is identified as having a concussion should be cleared by a medical professional; not a high school coach. I can't imagine that any coach wants to make that decision. This is a lawyer's dream...

I would think having no one trained at the site would be better then asking the coaching staff to learn medicine in 8 hours.

Agreed, I would have to say, the training a coach gets is nowhere close to what he or she needs to evaluate a concussion. My question is what happens if a concussion happens in the middle of a game? You are now asking a coach to evaluate a kid, stay in close contact with the kid to make sure he does not get worst and then talk to the parent about it AND still coach. I would have to say this would be quite difficult.
