In 2011 Dist. Teams, Breathitt Co.,Knott Co., Morgan Co., and Magoffin Co. Out of Dist. they played Belfry, Lawrence Co., Middlesboro, McCreary Central, Paris, Hart Co. and Shelby Valley. Won 1 Game, Rest blow out.

 

I heard that they dropped Middlesboro.

You hear coaches say "recruit the halls". I've always wondered How many juniors and seniors come out and stick with it, especially those who have never played a sport in high schoole, even in middle school, let alone football before? Also, of those juniors and seniors that come out having never played football and/or other sport(s) how many actually contribute if they stick with playing?

 

Maybe it's just me, but I believe the place where one can make the biggest impact in recruiting is while boys are still in middle school and freshman years. After their freshman year, if they aren't already playing another sport (and, you can recruit them by being visible at basketball and baseball games), how much does one really benefit from them coming out? I heard a very successful coach say one time about trying to get kids out that "If that 16 year old boy who has never played football, not playing any other sports yet has 1) a job 2) a vehicle and 3) pulling the women, then that's like trying to win a game down 21-0 (7 points for each of the three things listed). Can it happen? Sure, but once in a blue moon."

 

I'm not talking about a urban school, but one that is very rural like Jackson County and many others across our state.

I agree that very few pan out after their soph. year but when the numbers are down everyone is an assett. It's a catch 22, Got to have numbers to win, got to win to get numbers out. If you are working the halls the kids can see that you care and are putting forth an effort. Many times there are kids who have played in Middle School that is not playing.

I agree about those kids who have played before; those are the ones you really need to try to get out. However, I wonder if numbers aren't a catch 22 as well? I mean, what's better at a rural 1A-3A high school in KY; 1) having 30 kids who completely sell out to the program and able bodied or 2) 50 and those 20 that were added are juniors and seniors who fall into the criteria I layed out in an above post.

I didn't mean to hi-jack the thread, the topic of "recruiting the halls of the high school" has just always interested me from a standpoint of; does it really matter or is it just the PR/accepted way to think? (again, I feel a coach can do the most damage at the middle school-freshmen levels. Little league, middle school football games, middle school hallways----those are the honey pots IMO).

I've Coached teams with 25 kids out and with 50+kids out give me the 50+ everytime.

I have, too. Depends on the make up of kids within those numbers for me.

 

 

What if 20 of those 50 are kids have one or a culmination of 1) no work ethic 2) bad attitudes 3) zero potential? Granted, if you have 50 kids with work ethic, great attitude and/or average-good potential, then by all means the 50.

Put the bad ones as practice dummies for the good players.
