Just a scenario.....not a real situation.....

A kid is an 8th grader and dresses for varsity and plays sparingly. If the kid transfers legally to another school what happens?

Believe he can transfer and play. Think it is when you are a Freshman that the rule kicks in.

A move is not even necessary. For example, an 8th grader could play varsity for a county school and play varsity for the local Catholic school as a freshman. Rule does not start until 9th grade has begun.

Correct, NewCath volleyball had two girls that started as 8th graders on Beechwood and Bishop Brossart varsity then came to NewCath as freshman, seniors his year.

Okay. I thought there was some kind of rule that said you only have four years of varsity eligibility unless you start varsity as an 8th grader and stay at that school.

Incorrect. The 4 year window starts once you have "passed" 8th grade. So if you pass but repeat 8th grade that's one of your years (see Rodney Haddix from Scott County).

I believe that is an Ohio rule. Every kid has four years of varsity eligibility and once those four years are up they are done. I like this rule.

Ohio has the same rule as KY. Once you're promoted from 8th you have four years.
