November 21, 201114 yr Watched a 60 Minutes piece on ATR head Grover Norquist. For those not familiar with him he has been gaining pledges from state and national reps to NEVER vote for a tax increase. Cool. He believes in no tax increases ever. He once said anyone that has to raise taxes has failed to govern. Great debate topic but irrelevant to my post. He also stated that any rep that breaks the pledge will get the full force of ATR money going to unseat him. Dude is dead-set against raising taxes for ANY reason. What caught my attention was the fact that he had a bust of Ronald Reagan on his desk. Interesting.
November 21, 201114 yr As Alan Simpson puts it. Grover Norquist is a “megalomaniac, egomaniac, whatever you want to call him. … He ought to run for president, because that will be his platform, ‘No new taxes even if your country goes to hell.’ ”
November 21, 201114 yr Author As Alan Simpson puts it. Grover Norquist is a “megalomaniac, egomaniac, whatever you want to call him. … He ought to run for president, because that will be his platform, ‘No new taxes even if your country goes to hell.’ ” Not debating his position on taxes.
November 21, 201114 yr Not debating his position on taxes. Yeah, well fortunately that was the most irrelevant part of that post. "megalomaniac, egomaniac, whatever you want to call him..." is what I was getting at.
November 21, 201114 yr Author Yeah, well fortunately that was the most irrelevant part of that post. "megalomaniac, egomaniac, whatever you want to call him..." is what I was getting at. Great. Duly noted. You want to comment on the point of the thread?
November 21, 201114 yr Great. Duly noted. You want to comment on the point of the thread? I'm not entirely sure what is the point of the thread. The first paragraph is about taxes as well as the next sentence and then the one after that. Is the topic about the irony of Reagan raising taxes and this guy making sure no members of the GOP do and if they do he will make sure they get unseated? Cause if so, that is talking about his position on taxes.

As you know Grover doesn't mess around if you say you are for raising taxes. EVER. I point out that he has a bust of President Reagan who did indeed raise taxes when necessary and yet you don't see any irony in that? Am I following?

I point out that he has a bust of President Reagan who did indeed raise taxes when necessary and yet you don't see any irony in that? Am I following? No Clyde, ''What caught my attention'' was just way beyond my level of comprehension. To my previous post the irony of Reagan raising taxes and this guy making sure no members of the GOP do and if they do he will make sure they get unseated? Cause if so, that is talking about his position on taxes.
November 21, 201114 yr Author No Clyde, ''What caught my attention'' was just way beyond my level of comprehension. To my previous post So he would have campaigned against President Reagan when he raised taxes ? Would he have kept his bust?
November 21, 201114 yr Let me get this straight. He isn't allowed to have a bust of Ronald Reagan because he raised taxes? I see the irony, but not the importance of your point. He doesn't have to agree with Reagan's tax increase to use him as a model.

He doesn't have to agree with Reagan's tax increase to use him as a model. If you see the irony you see the point of the thread. I really didn't think I was delving too deep here. Here's the problem with your last statement IMO. He made it clear that anyone that ANY elected official who is for raising taxes is an enemy of him and his followers: Kroft: But you make it pretty clear. If someone breaks the pledge, you're gonna do everything you can to get rid of them. Norquist: To educate the voters that they raise taxes. And again, we educate people-- Kroft: To get rid of them. Norquist: To encourage them to go into another line of work, like shoplifting or bank robbing, where they have to do their own stealing. Kroft: You've got them by the shorthairs. Norquist: The voters do. Yeah. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18560_162-57327816/the-pledge-grover-norquists-hold-on-the-gop/?pageNum=3&tag=contentMain;contentBody So, he uses someone as a model that he would have said needs to get a new job like shoplifting or stealing where they have to do their own stealing? Come on.
November 21, 201114 yr He is an example of the main problem in our government. I see your point, the irony. If he sincerely believes in The Pledge he would detest Reagan for tax increase, however, Reagan never signed The Pledge and therefore wouldn't have been held accountable so I hold onto my previous statement. He doesn't have to agree with Reagan's tax increase to use him as a model.

November 21, 201114 yr Anyone that doesn't sign the pledge is the enemy to Grover Norquist. Was the pledge around for Reagan to sign?
November 21, 201114 yr So he would have campaigned against President Reagan when he raised taxes ? Would he have kept his bust? I have no idea. This man sounds like a moron. However, you are painting this to be black and white. Regan did raise taxes but he cut them so dramatically. He raised them a small percentage of what he cut them by. That is like giving an employee a cut on their pay by over half then raising their pay by a small amount not even coming close to what the original pay was and then spouting '' See!!! I raised your pay!!!" and acting like you did them a favor. I see liberals use this argument all the time that Reagan raised taxes and therefore he wouldn't even have a chance in hell to get elected in today's GOP field. To the man who doesn't do his research, yes that would be the case. If you actually take the time and look at Reagan's history and get an accurate assessment we wouldn't have Reagan hijackers that try and distort what he did. So with this guy looking at Reagan's whole history on lowering taxes and his commitment I think he would probably keep the bust and campaign for him. Would Reagan want his support? That is an entirely different discussion.
