Former big leaguer new Clark County coach

Posted by Mike Fields on September 20, 2011

Matt Ginter, who pitched seven years in the major leagues, is the new baseball coach at Clark County.

Ginter played for Clark County and Mississippi State before being taken in the first round of the 1999 draft by the Chicago White Sox. He won his major league debut in 2000.

Ginter also pitched for the New York Mets, Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians before retiring after the 2008 season.

Ginter, 33, will succeed Larry Allison at Clark County. Allison coached the Cardinals for 14 years. He retired after leading them to the state tournament last season. Allison will continue to serve as an assistant coach in boys’ basketball.

“Larry did a great job with the program,” Clark County principal David Bolen said. “In time, I think Matt can elevate it to the next level. I don’t know how many schools can say they have a former major leaguer as their coach.”

Ginter hired as baseball coach at George Rogers Clark High School

Matt Ginter has been hired as baseball coach at George Rogers Clark High School. Clark principal David Bolen confirmed the hiring Tuesday in an e-mail to staff members at the school.

"I'm excited to work with some of these kids and see what we can get done," he said.

Ginter, a former standout at Clark, enjoyed a successful career in the major leagues. He was drafted as the 22nd pick overall by the Chicago White Sox in 1999.

Ginter pitched for the White Sox, the New York Mets, Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Indians.

During his Major League career, Ginter compiled a 5-7 record, started 19 games, had one save and compiled a 5.43 earned run average.

Ginter, who hit three home runs in the majors, enjoyed his best season in 2004 with the Mets. Ginter went 1-3 and started 14 games. Ginter recorded 38 strikeouts.

Ginter played college baseball at Mississippi State and was a member of the U.S.A. World Cup baseball team in 1998. Ginter recorded a 5.40 ERA and collected one save in three appearances.

Ginter replaces longtime coach Larry Allison, who stepped down in August after guiding the Cardinals to their first-ever appearance in the state baseball tournament last June.

Played against him in high school.

He wasn't bad.

Sounds like a great hire for GRC. He has big shoes to fill. Best of luck to him.

Agree, great hire for GRC, and he is a super person. Look forward to Matt building on the tradition that Allison has built in the last 14 years.
