That's not what he said. He said he wasn't going to take the state police off of their other duties to fetch them from this nonsense, and that he trusted they would come to their senses and return to their jobs. I never heard anything remotely close to him saying it was acceptable or that he "respected" their doing it.

Indiana's Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels, who had urged GOP legislators not to act on the right-to-work bill this year, told reporters that the absence of Democrats on Tuesday was a legitimate move and that he would not use state troopers to compel their attendance. Daniels had said he was worried that acting on the contentious right-to-work issue could derail other parts of his legislative agenda.

 

"I trust people's consciences will bring them back to work," Daniels said. "I choose to believe that our friends in the minority, having made their point, will come back and do their duty, the jobs that they're paid to do."

I also want to add that the reason I remembered was because I was so impressed with his comments. I really like Mitch Daniels, from what I follow of Indiana politics in the C-J.

Apparently, the Indiana walk-out isn't such a noble cause. They're not just opposed to limits on collective bargaining, they're opposed to anything the Republicans want to bring to the floor this session.

Maybe Mitch said what RM credited him for but I'm not sure. What I heard he said was that he wasn't going to use state troopers to get the legislators that were shirking their duties because they had more important things to do then round up people who weren't doing their jobs. Not exactly a ringing endorsment.

 

I would look into:

 

Not paying the AWOL legislators

 

Firing every member of the AWOL legislator's staffs

 

Post police at the homes and work places of the AWOL legislators and not allow them to get to those places until they go back to work.

 

Send the Indiana Democratic Party a bill for every penny of extra cost incurred because of special sessions that will be called.

Didn't say I didn't believe you. But Daniels today did say that he thought the legislators were shirking their responsibilities.
