Wow! BIG win for Boone!!! I'm surprised but obviously very pleased. Outstanding balance for the Lady Rebels which is becoming much more common place here at the end of the regular season.

Coming back to beat SHA is a very tough task in and of itself, but overcoming a 10pt deficit @ SHA with 2 1/2 minutes to go AND win by 5...virtually unheard of from a Moir coached team. It appears the seniors stepped up which is what needs to happen the rest of the way in big games.

When I read your prediction my first thought was a "win win" for ya. If BC loses "you smile" if BC wins you say "I picked it"

Basketball: Boone County shoots past Sacred Heart 55-50

Sacred Heart shut down Boone County's top scorer in the second half, but it couldn't halt the Rebels' flurry of late-game three-pointers.

 

Boone County made three baskets from beyond the arc in the final three minutes to secure a 55-50 win over the host Valkyries.

 

The Rebels (23-5) made just 1 of 9 three-pointers in the first half. But when they needed a rally, they found their outside game.

 

With Sacred Heart (20-5) ahead 50-40, guard Annie Browning sank a three-point shot to cut the deficit to 50-43 with 2:31 left.

 

On the next play, Browning grabbed a steal but missed a layup. Forward Sydney Moss snatched the rebound, balanced herself to stay inbounds under the basket and passed to guard Stacie Shrout, who nailed a three-pointer to make it 50-46.

 

Shrout then stole the Valkyries' inbound pass and made another three-point shot to cut the gap to 50-49 with 1:34 left.

 

The Rebels took a 51-50 lead on a basket by forward Elizabeth Switzer and held on for the win.

 

"We got into the flow of what we wanted to do," Boone County head coach Nell Fookes said. "We settled down, we put the ball in Sydney's hands, where good things happen, and the girls got those shots. We went to the press and got some nice turnovers from that."

 

Moss, who dominated the first half with 14 points, was held to three in the second half but made several key assists.

 

The junior, who Fookes said had been sick, finished with 17 points, 16 rebounds, five assists and seven steals.

 

"She was definitely a factor," Sacred Heart coach Donna Moir said. "Everything went through her. In the fourth quarter we lost their shooters a couple times and they stepped up and hit the shots."

 

Moss was the driving force behind a first-half Rebel rally that gave Boone County a 20-9 lead with 6:10 left before halftime.

 

Sacred Heart embarked on an 11-0 rally, which included two baskets and a free throw from guard Maddie Peabody.

 

With the score tied at 20, Moss ended the run with a jumper and followed with two free throws to give the Rebels a 24-20 lead.

 

Shrout said the players were aiming to get the win for Fookes. The coach, in her 26th year at the school, now has 599 career victories.

 

"We definitely wanted to get the win for Coach, and we wanted to win because Sacred Heart is a great team," Shrout said. "They know they're good and we know we're good, so we knew it would be a good game. We came out with the victory, and that's what counts."Center Lydia Nash had 13 points and made 7 of 8 free throws for the Rebels. Browning had 11 points, and Shrout added 10.

 

The Rebels have won three in a row and 5 of 6.

 

Guard Monica McGreal led the Valkyries with 15 points, and center Morgan Clemons added 13. Forward Annamarie Campbell had a team-high 10 rebounds.

 

"There were moments where we played really well," Moir said. "You had that feeling that they were due to hit a three, and they hit three in a row. That kind of took some air out of our sails. But I was proud of our effort."

Nice win. What happened in the last 3 minutes that wasn't happening earlier? Did BC press late and not earlier. Did SHA give it away at the line or were there guards that rattled facing the pressure. You wouldn't expect a top team in the state to lose their composure that badly. BC must have done someting special to turn it around that drastically. Good question! Wish I had been there for that one to know the answer. I watched Sacred Heart against Manual in the LIT and they appeared to be very composed and unflappable. Manual is very athletic and their press didn't seem to rattle SH in that one. Sometimes things just start to go bad for a team (or good in the case of BC!) and they snowball on them. That's probably what happened last night.

I had a gut feeling about Boone. Since their loss to Ryle they have been on a mission, so to speak. I have seen all or part of their staff EVERY Ryle game since then. It should be another monumental battle next week, if they both take care of business next Tuesday.

Always great to see a NKy team go down to Louisville and bring home a win from one of their top teams! Nice job!
