I like that Fookes, Burgess, and Pitts had some good minutes tonight. Boone will need a strong bench down the stretch so getting those 3 more minutes is going to be key. Also Boone put the starters back in when they were still up 10 with about 4 minute left. I was surprised that Highlands came back and tied the game on the starters but I was impressed that Boone did not let that rattle them. Brown had a big basket at the end and Stanley hit some key free throws down the stretch.

Highlands came out on fire hitting their first 4 shots, I believe three of them were treys. They scored 14 points in the first 3 minutes of the game jumping up 14-2 with the ball. Boone Co came right back before the qtr ended and tied it up. The Birds then had a 5 point 2nd qtr which pretty much put them in a hole and down 33-24 at the half. I was quite surprised Boone Co played a zone agains the Birds allowing them to get open looks around the perimeter. Crowley and Egan were shooting the ball very well for Highlands.

 

Brown was tough to stop in the lane. He basically sets himself up 5 feet from the hoop and goes to work scoring pretty much at will. The only time he missed was when the Birds doubled down but that wasnt often. I thought the Burgess kid came in and gave the Rebels a lift along with Pitts who I am assuming was the player with the long hair.

 

The Rebels got up by 17 at one point and McQueary emptied the bench a little too early. The Birds cut it down to 10 and the starters came back into the game. The Birds continued their run led by Alex Dean hitting some nice shots on the drive and off a steal in the backcourt. They tied the game late in the 4th and the Rebels' Brown hit 2 Ft's to put them up with a minute to play. The Birds had the ball poised to tie it or go up 1 and they turned it over. They got the ball back down 3 with less than a minute to play and turned it over again. They definitely had their chances to win the game with under a minute to play or atleast go up. Boone Co did a nice job of securing the win with made FT's when the Birds had to foul.

 

I was very impressed with Connor Crowley's ability to score not only from behind the arc but also off the dribble. He has really had a nice season thus far and it was also nice to see Ryan Egan get his stroke going.

 

Boone Co is a solid team but they do miss Montgomery's athleticsim around the basket. Crabtree did a nice job of catching and shooting in the lane and Brown is the real deal. He is a wide body with quick feet and solid post moves. Stanley also had a nice game for the REbels, he hit a couple big 3's to bring them back in the 1st qtr.

 

These types of games are good for the Stewartless Birds as they clearly show they can compete with other top teams in the Region with the lineup they throw out there. Once Stewart gets back they should be even better.

Glad to hear the that Boone is starting to use the bench its going to be tough come tourney time to make a run without a bench. How did Pitts do off the bench? Sounds like he got some solid minutes. That kids has a ton of upside IMO!

This is now the third game that lists Samson in the HHS box score. The young man's name is Samson Lewis. How does this continue to happen? Is someone from HHS calling in the box score and giving the wrong name? I surely hope not.
