This game alone was worth the price of admission at the BOKC!

Tough loss for Holmes. They led the entire game up until the 2 minute mark of the 4th quarter and then a silly turnover at halfcourt allowed Aiken to take a 68-66 lead.

 

Hayes forced a shot at the other end and Aiken got the ball and was fouled. They made 1 of 2 to take a 69-66 lead but Jaleel Gray came right back down the court to make it a one point game with a nice drive and pull up jumper. Aiken would again be fouled with 20 seconds left and sink 1 of 2 to make it 70-68.

 

Booher would call a timeout at this point and set up the dramatic finish. Hayes came down, drove the lane then found sophomore Quan Palmer for a HUGE 3 pointer with 9 second to go. Aiken came back down the floor after a timeout, missed 3 consecutive shots down low, then get a tip in off a missed shot just before the red light went off. Aiken wins 72-71 on a tip on by Olefimu Thompson.

 

Great game by both teams.

 

I doubt very seriously Holmes sees anyone else in the 9th region or the rest of the year with the type of quickness, athleticism, and speed of Aiken. This game gives me more confidence that Holmes has the ability to play with and beat any team in the region. Aiken had 3 kids that are D1 prospects. Willie Moore (Miami OH, James Madison, Akron, Ohio U, and Kent St to name a few), Austin Grimes (Ellison said he is a high major prospect as a soph and he proved it tonight), as well as frosh Tyonte Robertson (Ellison said he already holds a few offers as a frosh...impressive).

 

For Holmes, they had several different guys seriously step up tonight. Hayes was held in check for the most part with 10 points, but Knox (18), Gray (15), and Rice (13) all three picked up the slack. Mayfield also had 7 and after not scoring a field goal the entire game, sophomore Quan Palmer hits a 3 to finish with 5 points.

 

Both teams were horrible from the free throw line and that ultimately doomed Holmes as they made 1 less free throw than Aiken and lost by 1.

 

Credit Aiken though. They broke Holmes press with relative ease for a lot of easy transition points. I don't see any other 9th region team having that much success against Holmes' press, however. Aiken was EXTREMELY athletic and killed Holmes on the boards.

 

Great learning experience for Booher's squad early in the season.

I can't wait to see how Holmes matches up with the top 9th Region teams. Very exciting style of play from the men from Holmes. Man the 9th Region is going to be fun to watch.

Glad people are finally realizing just how good this Holmes team is, after seeing them in person. Very athletic bunch with a lot of speed and quickness.

 

Knox is a brut down low. I know I keep saying it but his strength makes him extremely tough and he showed it tonight finishing through HARD contact to get FOUR and one's.

Mr. Grimes of Aiken is a 10th Grader? Funny I didn't very look at the program and thought with the way the young man looked and played, that he was a senior! Walter, I looked and sure enough! WOW. I was/am duly impressed.

 

I have heard a lot about Hayes but he didn't impress me, as he was 4-18 from the floor, 0-3 from behind the arch and 2-5 from the charity line. He also had 4 TO's and only 1 assist!

Hayes indeed had a rough first half but stepped up down the stretch. He scored 4 straight to put Holmes up 4 at one point in the fourth quarter. Don't let this game be the judgement of his game. He had 23 pts and 10 stls in the FIRST HALF against St. Henry. Kid is a player and he won't go up against too many teams this year with guards as good as Grimes and Moore of Aiken. I see your point though and he was less than impressive tonight.

 

Knox carried Holmes in the first half and Gray carried Holmes in the second half.

 

To show that guys have off nights, Knox had just 4 against St. Henry 2 nights ago. That's what makes Holmes so good though, IMO. They have different guys stepping up when a teammate is having a bad game.

 

Grimes is extremely tough though. Very quick hands as well. I was surprised when Holmes got a 4th foul on him around the 4 minute mark of the 4th quarter, they didn't try to attack him and get a 5th foul called on him? Myself, my partner, and the TBNK staff were all wondering the same thing after the game. Kid was unstoppable at both ends of the floor.

Honestly my favorite part of the games tonight and the real reason for my attending, was the half time game between the Covington Holmes and Cincinnati Aiken game.

 

One of the players was a former employee and one I currently work with daily, played in the game and they had a ball.

That's incorrect. The people running the Bluegrass/Buckeye Classic canceled Mason County, Mason didn't cancel anything. Unreal. Simply canceling a team out. I have heard in the past that this event is not run very well but their schedule for tomorrow is wacked.
