Scooter Hollis and the #2 Bowling Green Purples (7-1, 1-0 District 2) renew their crosstown rivalry with Demonte Smith and the #8 Warren Central Dragons (6-2, 2-0 District 2) in the 5A District 2 championship game.

 

The Bowling Green Purples enter winners of 18 of their last 22 games, and are seven time defending district champions. The last team to win Bowling Green's district besides the Purples? Warren Central, all the way back in 2002. Meanwhile, the Dragons are searching for their first outright district title since they played in 4A in 2006. The winner positions themselves favorably for a postseason run, while the loser likely faces a second round matchup at Christian County. Bowling Green won seven consecutive in the series from 2003 to 2008, but the Dragons stunned the state with an 18-10 upset of the then #2 Purples last season at Bowling Green. The Purples look to return the City-County title to Rockingham Lane while the Dragons look to make it five consecutive wins over local teams.

My personal feeling on the game is that Warren Central's defense can do enough to keep them with most teams in the state, but their offense is going to have an incredibly tough time with the stout Purples defense. I think the desire to erase last season's disappointing loss to Central will be a big factor as well, and I can't see Bowling Green letting Central beat them two years in a row. I take Bowling Green 24-7.

I believe it's one of those mythical titles. Like state titles before 1959 and a true college football championship.

I love what Rogers is doing @ WC, but BG will get their revenge from last year with a big win. BG wins this one 35-21.

Guru- Having seen WC's defense first hand I tend to agree that it will keep this game close. The question is whether or not th e wing-t can exploit the Purples defense enough. I was scouting the game last year and watched an undermanned Central team beat them so I have no prediction on this one.
