What Happens If....?

Featured Replies

There has been a little talk about some schools struggling to field teams, especially at the 1A level. What does the KHSAA do if schools like Paris, Bracken County, Fulton City or Fulton County (and perhaps others) drop football after this season? Do they continue to drop the smallest 2A schools into 1A to guarantee 32 schools?

By the way, I'm not suggesting that any of those schools are dropping. You can put any other team in the question if you desire.

I guess it would shake things up if Mayfield and Beechwood dropped the sport.

Seriously, that's a good question. My gut tells me that for at least year 1, there would be 3-team districts; especially if the decision to drop the sport wasn't made for several months. But my gut has been wrong before.

I agree. I think they could maneuver around it if schools contacted them right now and said they were dropping the sport. But schedules are already being made so it would be hard to get the toothpaste back in the tube.

By the way, the KHSAA scheduling grid says that if you have a three-team district you are to play a home/away round-robin in the regular season. There are currently two three-team districts that aren't going by that rule right now.

I'm pretty sure I read where it said the Class A was going to be the smallest 32 teams, if a team is allowed to move up, or in the case a team drops football, the next smallest team would be moved down from 2A. I'm almost positive I read that.

That doesn't necessarily take into account what happens if next June two 1A schools say "we aren't playing this year." Does the KHSAA automatically drop the two smallest, or is it too late?

That I don't know, I would say with schedules already made they would have to wait until the next year. But, I honestly don't know what they would do.

I don't think they'd move teams in the middle of a two-year cycle, unless maybe a handful of teams within the class or two teams from the same district happened to drop out at the same time. But after two years, Ram, my understanding is also that they would also pull a team or teams down from 2A.
