For some reason I have always thought that you have to jump straight up. At least that was my impression of the NCAA rule.

 

Regardless, I would love to see the film of this if anyone has it. Sounds impressive.

I never thought it was illegal, I can remember teams attempting it though and never thought anythig of it.

Since the officials are no longer allowed to comment:

 

The best I could find is "hurdling" violates Rule 9-4-3c, which would make "hurdling" an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty because of safety issues

 

Now, the problem comes with what constitutes "hurdling". Hurdling is defined as far as football as: leaping of a player leading with is feet or knees over a player who has nothing else contacting the ground then his feet. So, if a player leaps over a player leading with his knees or feet and the defender is standing on his feet, that is hurdling. If the defender is laying on the ground and a player leaps over him, that is not hurdling. Or, if a player leaps over a defender and leads with his hands, or the ball, that is not hurdling. Think of the typical picture of a person "hurdling" in track.

 

Now, what some people are thinking of is "aiding". A player can not be aided in blocking a kick. A defender can not be off the line and take a run and jump off of a down lineman to block a kick. And a player can not be thrown by another player to block a kick. This happened in one our games last year, a player ran and jumped off of a down defensive lineman and blocked an extra point. That is also illegal. The block was allowed, then the officiating crew got a week off for allowing the game to be dicided by the block.

In this particular case, Pike jumped both lines, through a gap in the d-line, contacted the center (as he went over him) and nearly beat the ball to the holder. Had to be roughing the center......

 

Great athletic play, however. Not too many kids could have made the play- illegal or not.

I'm afraid that you will not be getting any officials to answer rules question on any public forums. Per the KHSAA, officials are not allowed to post any longer.

How would anyone know if they use a screen name? I am a registered official in other sports and I have never heard anyone say anything about this before and I still get mass emails from KHSAA quite often.
