I haven't read any of this thread other than this page. I hope I don't get yelled at by the "life's too short to drink cheap, black coffee" guy.

 

Ironically "good stuff" isn't about the price you pay, but more about the way you brew any coffee. I'll never yell at you for drinking cheap, black coffee. :lol: But I will preach the importance of proper preparation.

I'm with you on the East African coffees. I'm a big fan of Ethiopian coffee. I also enjoy a handful of Latin American coffees, but not all of them.

 

I'm not a fan of Latin American coffees at all, except for Guatamalan coffees, and then usually only iced. They are far too acidic for my palate. But, that's not a "coffee snob" thing. I love bold, deep, earthy tones. It crosses over into my wine preferences as well.

 

If you like Ethiopian coffees, one I HIGHILY recommend is Harrar. This will sound really, REALLY weird, but it evokes images of elephants when I drink it. :lol: It's deep and bold in flavor, but with "grassy" overtones. Really, really great coffee.

RM I just got a new Oester coffee maker and it's the first one I've had with a cone filter. It came with a permanent filter but I saw you talking about a special filter. What do you use? does it make a huge difference if I'm just a Folger's guy?

Can you describe the permanent filter? The advantage to the type of filter I use is that it allows the water to be in contact with the coffee longer extracting more of the oils in the coffee which is where the flavor is. As well, because the filter is metal, those same oils are delivered into your cup. Paper filters trap much of that.

 

All that said, you should be able to get a quality cup simply by making sure that you use enough coffee to make sure the water doesn't strip right through it.

 

Also, if you are ever feeling adventurous, I'd be happy to meet you at a coffee shop for a tasting of a few different coffees. It may not change your mind about what you buy, but I think you'd be amazed at the differences regions, environmental conditions, and roasts and make. It's most fun when n done with food pairings.

The filter that came with my machine is made of a fine white plastic mesh. It has became discolored and no matter how much I rinse it it stays a light brown color. I did know about using enough coffee though. Learned it from Alton Brown.

:lol: Good old Alton! Just let me know when! Don't worry about discoloration but do watch for clogging. Plain white vinegar is good to use to clean the machine. Also consider a metal cone. They last longer
