Caldwell County 40 Calloway 19

Featured Replies

Brandon Sigler rushed for 99 yards and 2 TDs, returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown after Calloway had gone up 14-12 in the third quarter, and returned an interception 38 yards for a score in the second quarter. He also handled kickoffs, returned kickoffs and punts and punted — one punt went 70 yards — and took several snaps at quarterback.

Think I also saw him mopping up the locker room after the game.

I heard he made a phone call in the first half and the lightning stopped soon after

Between the 43-minute lightning delay and Calloway throwing the ball 52 times (with 30 incompletions), the game got over about 11:15 p.m.

It was one of the more painful games I have ever watched. I have said this time and time again about high school football and in particular Calloway the past few seasons, why teams insist on throwing the ball so much is beyond me.

I have watched hundreds of high school kids in practice go out and run routes against air, and they barely have a 60% completion percentage. Why do coaches think the solution is to air it out when you are in full pads and have a defense attacking you? No person is ever going to convince me it should be more than a 3:1 run/pass ratio at the high school level. Obviously circumstance dictate that number to change, but you get my point.

And for the record, Caldwell pretty much had the same philosophy. Up by 8 points or so in the fourth quarter, and they decide to air it out on first down from mid-field???? Get down to the 2 yard line (after running it a couple of plays), and throw the ball again??? Why would you put your team in a situation to where your opponent can bring a turnover back on you?
