Looks like Henry Clay, Scott Co., and Fern Creek were badly overrated.

Actually, Mike Fields did put out an updated top 25 rankings list, before the first Cantrall rankings come out next week. Here it is:

 

1.ST. XAVIER: I know, I know, the Tigers let a four-TD lead almost disappear before escaping with a 35-34 win over Ballard. But how many teams could roll up a 28-0 lead on a team as talented as Ballard in the first place? The Tigers have won 13 in a row. Friday’s game: Lexington Catholic.

2.TRINITY: The Shamrocks are young, young, young. But they’re also talented, talented, talented. This sophomore group will grow into a monster football team, sooner rather than later. (They outgunned Highlands in a pre-season scrimmage. Friday’s game: at Manual.

3.HIGHLANDS: Coach Dale Mueller is once again talking up his Bluebirds as Superbirds. It’s hard to argue after the three-time defending state champs beat a very good Ryle team 29-14 last week for their 43rd consecutive victory over a Kentucky opponent. Friday’s game: Beechwood.

4.RYLE: The Raiders were competitive in that loss to Highlands, and their season-opening 61-7 torching of Covington Catholic is even more impressive after CovCath’s 54-21 torching of Lexington Catholic last week. Friday’s game: Newport Central Catholic.

5.BALLARD: Throw it up and Bruins’ receiver Devante Parker will go up and get it as he showed in leading that comeback against St. Xavier last week. In two games the 6-foot-4 Parker has 14 catches for 306 yards and 3 TDs. Friday’s game: Central.

6.JOHN HARDIN: Over the last 4 years, Coach Mark Brown’s teams have won 35 of their last 26 regular-season games. Friday’s game: at Meade County.

7.BELL COUNTY: Nobody blends efficient offense and effective defense better than the Bobcats. Friday’s game: Open date.

8.MALE: Bob Redman is gone, but new coach Chris Wolfe still has athletes making plays as they showed in 35-28 win over Eastern last week. Friday’s game: at Western.

9.BOYLE COUNTY: Give the Rebels a few weeks to get their newcomers some game experience and they’ll look more like last year’s 4A champs.

10.BOWLING GREEN: Two weeks into the season, the Purples have outscored Southwestern and Daviess County 118-0. Friday’s game: Franklin-Simpson.

11.JOHNSON CENTRAL: Jim Matney’s team put a scare into Boyle County in the season opener before losing 36-29. Friday’s game: Knox Central in Appalachian Bowl at Clay County.

12.HENRY CLAY: Hard to believe those were the real Blue Devils in their uninspired season-opening loss to Boone County. Friday’s game: at Pulaski County in Don Marshall Bowl.

13.MAYFIELD: The Cards challenge themselves against bigger schools and usually prove they can handle it. Friday’s game: Paducah Tilghman.

14.MANUAL: After getting dismantled by Highlands in their season opener, the Crimson showed something in a rout of Fern Creek. Friday’s game: Paducah Tilghman.

15.COLLINS: The brand new team (and school) got a bunch of talented transfers from Shelby County and could be a factor in 4A in their debut season. Friday’s game: at Marion County.

16.KNOX CENTRAL: Nobody paid much attention when the Panthers beat Clay County 9-6 to open the season, but then Clay County turned around and beat Scott County 41-26. If Knox knocks off Johnson Central Friday, look out 4A. Friday’s game: Johnson Central in Appalachian Bowl at Clay County.

17.OWENSBORO: Close loss, good sign — the Red Devils lost 28-21 in their opener last week to Evansville Reitz, the top-rated 4A team in Indiana. Friday’s game: Owensboro Catholic.

18.TATES CREEK: The Commodores could be turning the corner into a very good team, with a balanced offense and gnarly defense. Friday’s game: Bryan Station.

19.NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC: A 35-28 win over Dixie Heights to start the season was impressive. It’ll be interesting to see how the Thoroughbreds fare against 6A foes Madison Central and Ryle the next two weeks. Friday’s game: Madison Central.

20.PULASKI COUNTY: Johnny Hines’ Maroons have a potent offense led by QB Zach Eastham. Friday’s game: Henry Clay in Don Marshall Bowl.

21.CHRISTIAN COUNTY: The Colonels should always be ranked when they’re this talented. Friday’s game: Henderson County.

22.LOUISVILLE HOLY CROSS: The Class A Cougars have outclassed a pair of bigger schools, routing 3A Henry County 54-24 and 4A Bullitt East 63-12. Friday’s game: at Moore.

23.DANVILLE: Beating 3A power Mason County to start the season may have signaled the Admirals are ready to reassert themselves. Saturday’s game: Paducah Tilghman.

24.HOLMES: Once thought of as a basketball school, Holmes is making a name for itself in football. Friday’s game: Bellevue.

25.LONE OAK: Jack Haskins has turned this once moribund program into one of the best in 4A. Friday’s game: at Marshall County.

 

I must admit, I am a bit surprised that he didn't move Trinity to number one, given how badly T beat the Indiana team and how narrrowly X beat Ballard.

If he is accurately quoted, then Manual (#14) will be in for a surprise when Trintiy instead of Tilghman shows up for pre-game warmups.
