Garrard County and Anderson County will open the 2010 season against one another in Lawrenceburg this Friday night, August 20. This will mark the 22nd meeting between these two schools, but will be the first visit to Anderson County for the Lions since 1983. The long dormant series was renewed last season.

Both teams are hoping that improved play from young players could catapult them into a successful season. For Anderson County, who finished last season 9-2 in Class 5A District 4, they have to replace their do-it-all quarterback Jacob Russell. The Bearcats also lost a good deal of speed from their backfield. Most expect Anderson to be strong up front, however, so it could be a matter of finding someone capable of running through the holes.

As for the Lions, who finished 5-7 last season, they will need to replace two solid skill players in Tyler Ray and Fred Hayes. The good news for Garrard, though, is that Coach Mark Scenters and his staff (along with the middle school) have done a really nice job of developing depth, with 46 players on the scrimmage roster last week. There appears to be a number of quality runners in the backfield, led by juniors Corey Wilson and Markell Hayes.

Garrard will again be quarterbacked by sophomore Billy Abney who tossed for more than 900 yards and 9 scores as a freshman. Abney will be counted on to be more consistent in running the offense, something most expect him to do.

As for the Garrard defense, they will again be led by junior Bret Dowell and sophomore Garrett Caudill, along with a host of other sophomores and juniors who contributed last season. But the defense will have to get stronger this season after allowing nearly 31 ppg last year.

Much like last season, this should be a very interesting season opener. Anderson County is likely the favorite, but do they have the talent in the backfield to keep drives going? Does Garrard have enough defense to get off the field, something they struggled with last season? And what will both teams conditioning be like due to the expected heat? All those questions will be answered this week.
