Years ago, I asked this sort of question of a friend, who was a very liberal Methodist minister. I think it was right after a tragedy where a church collapsed, killing some in attendance.

 

When I asked him how a benevolent God could allow such a thing to happen (and by extension, any tragedy involving loss of life), his response was, "God didn't have anything to do with it."
