I think a salary cap would be horrible for baseball. Teams like the Yankees and Red Sox keep the league in business. If they become average teams, I don't think the casual fan would watch many games at all. There is a reason the Yankees and Sox are on TV almost every night ESPN has a game. The teams that make the most most should be able to use it I think, because some teams barely make any at all. A Salary Cap is as unAmerican and uncapitalistic as it gets.

 

My suggestions:

1. Both leagues should use a DH IMO. Maybe that's not the traditional way, but it will increase scoring in the National League and make it more competitive with the AL I think.

2. Marketing obviously needs a major upgrade. You have guys like Pujols, Howard, or even Strasburg, use them to improve interest in the game. Heck, one of the all-time great Yankees is still playing in Jeter, why not market that more?

3. More teams in the playoffs. Or better yet, the best 4 teams get in regardless of division. Maybe that makes the regular season less meaningful, but it would make the playoffs even better.

4. $1 Beer nights every Tuesday night.

 

#4 is an AMAZING idea! Thats why people go to minor league games. And also lower the beer prices to prices comparable to the bars. Attendance would shoot through the roof. And they need to really get some new marketing tools. Other then that keep Baseball the way it is! Its America's Pastime!

I understand what you are saying, but look at it this way. You can charge $1 per pop or $4 per pop. If the stadium seats 50,000 and everyone buys one pop, that's $50,000. But if the stadium is 1/4 full and everyone buys a pop, you still make the same $50,000. So in truth, the best way to drive down the prices is to not go and to not make purchases. But people can't do that - so there is no need to change the pricing structure.

 

The Reds already have a $1 concession. I was there last night :popcorn:

With all the revenue sharing and everything I think it could be quite logical for baseball to implement a minimum salary cap to help all teams out a little bit.

Why wouldn't the union agree to a minimum salary level? They would be all for it, that would require all the teams to spend money. Right now some teams are content to spend almost none of their own money, spend the luxury tax money and make a profit. A minimum salary level would increase the money spent across the league.

Bingo. It would also give teams more money to spend and they wouldn't be so tight with it. You have veteran players like Jermain Dye, John Smoltz, Pedro Martinez, etc who can still play but teams won't pay what they want. With a minimum salary teams would have more flexibility with salaries.

It's a good thing you are a part of the union then because they would love to have a minimum salary. It works for everyone, don't get where you see a downside to it, and if you do disagree with something or say it won't happen it's usually a good idea to provide some aspect or reasoning as to why. :thumb:

When literally EVERY team refuses to pay what those guys want, it's time for "those guys" to take a look in the mirror & realize that they're not as valuable as they used to be...
