Highlands Baseball

I know they have gotten off to a slow start but how have they looked lately? I have complete trust in Coach Baioni(sp) and know that they will be very good in a couple years but was just trying to see if anyone out here knows anything else. Thanks in advance.

With as many athletes in that school its ashame that many of those kids stuck to one sport which was football because I know of 5 right now that could have been excellent baseball players in that senior class.

While there is nothing wrong with diversifying, their focus on the one sport paid pretty significant dividends. :notworthy:

I hear that Liggett is a top notch player and a great kid. :thumb:

Liggett reminds me of Jeff Wera in many regards. I'm glad to see him hitting well against the brutal schedule.

Which circle's back to qryche's point about football players going out for baseball. Jeff was a very good QB for Beechwood and earned a scholarship to William and Mary playing baseball.

How is the Hebel kid hitting? I've seen his name in the box scores in the last week or two.

I honestly haven't seen much of the Varsity this season as I've been spending the majority of my time at the frosh & jv games, but I'll tell you this, from grades 7 - 9 there are a lot of good players who are committed to the baseball program.

I've also got a lot of confidence in the coaching staff & like the way they've been handling the kids. There's plenty of work still to be done, but IMO the next 4 or 5 years look bright for Highlands baseball. :thumb:

That's what I heard. That sounds good

I'm sure the same was said a few years ago with the 5 seniors mentioned as great baseball players. This is HHS, and after another year or two some of these players will be football only just like in the past. It's a shame but they will see others as football only and not want to lose their starting spot on the football team. It's a big reason HHS is successful in football as kids spend their entire year working out for one sport. If it were me, I'd play as many sports as I enjoyed and enjoy the high school experience year round.

I agree that they'll probably loose a few, but by and large I believe the program is well along in the process of "turning the corner" and will keep a much higher percentage of kids than in the past. Most of these kids are fired up about playing ball for Highlands and I don't see that changing overnight - although kids can be fickle as we all know.

A couple kids who were seniors last year really broke the myth that you can't play both sports, as each kid was a starter & major contributor to both the state champion football team and the district champion baseball team. I'm sure it took some extra effort, but it can & has been done successfully.

Hard to judge progress if you only look at Wins & Losses. Schedule has been challenging -- as everyone, including Ryan Ernst, knew it would be. Moreover, given the way the schedule has fallen, they have seen the #1 or #2 starters for very good schools (PRP, Lex Cath, Elder, 2 strong TN programs, Male, etc.). Beat goes on with 2009 Ohio state champion Moeller on SAT with DHs for Varsity, JV and Frosh. Should be interesting.

Liggett is a stud and a nice kid. Hit a 3 run HR against Scott and defensively he changes the game behind home plate.

Pitching depth is an obvious concern. With the recent good weather, you run anyone to the bump that can find the strike zone.
