Coach or salesman, Kentucky's Calipari is a winner

Featured Replies

Calipari just keeps rolling. Since he first arrived on the national stage, Calipari has changed offenses, stars and schools. He has gone from the hot new coach that everybody loved too much to the crafty veteran that people hate too much.

When people attack him, he fights back. Refuse to lose. But he'll open his home to fans and his program to anybody who can help him win.

This is a really good article. It points out stuff about the shadiness of Cal, etc. Stuff that we've all heard before, but I like the article.

I disagree with the quote that "Cal is better at what he does than almost anyone else." Be it coach or salesman. Salesman maybe, but coach NO! Until he has a championship or even a final four that's not revoked he hasn't done anything in my opinion. Every year multiple schools hang final four banners that are never taken down, until Cal can at least match that, he doesn't belong in the elite category of coaches. I'll admit a lot of coaches do as bad of things or worse than Cal, but fact remains until he has a final four in the records he hasn't accomplished anything. Just in today's coaches these guys have accomplished more than Cal: Coach K, Roy Williams, Jim Bohiem, Billy Donavan, Gary Williams, and Ben Howland just to name a few.

Fact remains he has to win one and keep it go belong in a list of elite coaches.

You named 4 Hall of Fame Coaches.

Yes because those are the best Coaches today. If Cal wants to be in that list win one and keep one. The guy said he is one of the best coaches, hall of famers today are the best.

Not exactly sure what more Howland has accomplished over Calipari? One more Final Four Appearance, and don't give me that "Cal's are vacated" crap either. Howland has been to one title game and got rolled. Florida also beat them pretty well the next year, and if I'm not mistaken, Calipari beat Howland the next year and was five seconds away from the title.

Taking the whole article into context, I don't think the author was necessarily saying he was the best "coach," in the terms of x's and o's or whatever. But basing everything else he says, there isn't much argument that he is the best at manipulating the areas and getting the best talent to buy into his philosophy and getting uber amounts of fans to drool over his every word. You can't argue that right now Calipari is the hottest coach in America and is the most talked about coach in America.

I'd argue that Cal has had a better career than Ben Howland.

Howland is 334 - 171 in his career. (1 National Runner-up, 2 Final 4's, 2 Sweet 16's)

Cal is 435 - 139. 2 Sweet 16's, 3 Elite 8's and 2 Final Fours (1 vacated, the other vacated but pending appeal.)

Howland actually has three, but no matter.

Until Cal has an final four in the books, I just don't feel he belongs in the discussion with a coach that has multiple career final fours. Just a quick glance at the numbers too it looks like Cal has coached 2 or 3 more years than Howland too. So win's may be closer to matching when/if they've coached same number of years.

So you're holding the vacated final fours against him. That's ok.

Cal has been a coach for 6 more seasons.

Howland's career winning % is 66%

Calipari's career winning % is 75%

If in your eyes he has not accomplished anything, then nothing he does will ever impress you. His coaching job this year has been masterful. To get a vet to take a different role, start 3 freshman and be on the national stage. And a HUGE part of a coaches job is to recruit players AND coach them. I LOVE Tubby Smith, but he could not relate to the big name MCD AA guys the way Calipari can. These big name kids who have been told that they are 'the bomb' for years, are buying into the team concept. THAT is coaching.

Do I think he is a saint? Absolutely not. I don't know of any saints in college basketball. They may be out there, but I can't name them. I know you hate UK and despise Calipari. But the man can coach.

So if I understand you correctly, if Memphis' appeal goes thru and their final 4 is not vacated, would you consider him a good coach then? Nothing would be different except 'the books'.

Let me rephrase, he hasn't done anything to belong in the elite coaching group. He's a very good coach. But if you want to be "one of the best" you have to have some title's and/or final fours on your resume. Simply high winning percentage isn't enough.

If/When he get's those and keeps them I will gladly put him on the list with any of the mentioned. Because of the vacated ones, just simply keeping 1 would get him there in my book. But you have to have one and keep it to stay.

Those #'s do not include a 38-2 season, which has been vacated.

If you include that season, Cal's career record is 473 - 141, a 77% winning percentage.

So was he a good/great coach after April of 2008, but lost that title in April (or whenever) of 2009?

In the books or not, you and I know he got two teams to the Final Four and has a good chance of getting another this year. Take the glasses off.
