Part of the issue is semantics.

 

Basketball games (to use another sport as an example) that are played after the end of the regular season are "tournaments". District tournaments, regional tournaments, state tournament.

 

Football games are "playoffs". For some reason, there is a mindset that "playoffs" should be very limited in scope/participation; while it's all right for "tournaments" to be more inclusive.

While I believe there are far too many classes, which causes some districts to have too few members, I believe the playoff setup and rotation it provides each year beats any seeding process or other objective process the KHSAA could come up with.

Without the typical not-thought-through reactive answer that "football is different", explain why the other sports should have teams with sub .500 records in their playoffs? This isn't the NBA, NFL or even college. This is a participation-based level of sport, not an achievement-based level. It is a supportive activity to be done as a partner with getting an education, not the sole reason for being. Do you are least feel the same way about the other sports?
