Interesting Basketball Rule

Featured Replies

Go to any higher level official clinic (such as NCAA basketball or baseball) and they will tell you that the best officials know the rule book, but they do not enforce it like an attorney would. Officials who try to hard to overanalyze the black and white wording of a rule can sometimes completely lose the intent of said rule. In the case given, i would either A) explain that the horn went off before the ball went into the basket, or B) let team B inbound. I cannot imagine that the people who wrote that rule wanted to let a team have two chances to score in this scenario. This is a "stump the ref" question that a good official gets past despite a screw-up by the table.

Interesting.

Are you saying you ignore the casebook example that clearly spells out how to handle this?

What if it wasn't the table that screwed up?

Are there other "stump the ref" questions that you ignore the rulebook?

The rule says it has to be caught no later than after the first dead ball after the clock starts.

ok so would this not be the next deadball?(going through the net)And if so wouldn't that make it not correctable?

So say that instead of team making a basket they get fouled again. Do they get two sets of 1+1's ? and how do you determine who got fouled the first time?for shooting purposes

It actually reads before the ball goes dead and becomes live again. The ball is dead when it goes thru and live when at the disposal of the thrower. Whistle must sound before the thrower has the ball.

And as much as I hate it, YES -- if there is a foul such as a rebounding foul as the ball goes thru you may end up with another set of free throws.

As much as I like the continued element, the following seems obvious:

1) Good officials will avoid this situation at all costs.

2) The same good officials will correct the error according to the rules when it happens.

3)Not everyone claiming to be a good official is reliable enough to enforce the unpopular rules.

4)We can what if this to no end.:deadhorse:

Thanks for all the kind words....won't reply much, but thought this was a good topic to speak out.

Wipe the 2 points off the board and shoot the free throws.

This is the correct answer. Also about the player getting his fifth foul and the table not catching it, he can continue to play even with scores, until the table catches it. These foul calls are correctable errors until the next dead ball.:dancingpa

Do you read the thread before answering incorrectly 52 post in? :idunno:

Well that would make no sense. According to your reasoning, you could have picked up a foul that was your fifth but no one at the scorer's table caught it till the ball was put into play after the free throws.

At that point, play could go on for another 3-5 minutes and you score 6-8 points while those at the scorer's table sit quietly, knowing the mistake and let all that occur.

I don't think that would be the case.

The table , once discovered, will wait to blow the horn until either the ball is dead or once the team with the player who fouled out has the ball. Anything that happens prior to the horn counts.

I can't believe there's another one. Here we go..

Rule 2-10

"Art 1... Officials may correct an error if a rule is inadvertantly set aside and results in:

a) failure to award a merited free throw"....

..."Art 2 In order to correct any of the officials errors listed in Art 1, such error must be recognizzed by an official no later than during the first dead ball after the clock has been properly started"

Case book 2.10.6.B

A1 is fouled by B1. It is a non-shooting personal foul. It is Team B's 7th foul of the half, but the official scorer fails to notify the officials and they award Team A the ball of bounds. After the inbpound pass, Team A misses a shot and and Team B secures the rebound. While Team B has the ball in its possession, B1 is charged with an illegal screen against A2. Before Team A os handed the ball for the throw-in, the officials are informed that Team A should have been awarded the automatic bonus on its previous possession. RULING: The error can still be corrected. A1 shoots the bonis free throw situation with no players on the lane. Team A is then awarded a throw-in for B1's team control fou\l.".....:deadhorse:

If this doesn't cure it, nothing will

Itsn't it funny how, when presented with facts, the cynics die off quickly???
