Garrard County 70 Powell County 33

Featured Replies

Garrard and Powell banged heads for the first quarter, setting up a potential shootout. The Lions trailed 21-13 before scoring 50 unanswered points. Powell was able to put two late touchdowns up against the JV defense.

Tonight was the best the offense has looked all season. Sound, diversified play calling, spreading the carries/catches all over the field. I think it was also apparent tonight how talented freshman quarterback Billy Abney is; he looked so good throwing the football. Perhaps it was better tonight because we had good weather for the first time in a month!

The defense were very shaky in the first quarter, but the staff made some adjustments (the biggest being bringing the safeties up to help the linebackers) and Powell's offense was ineffective from that point on.

Lions scored the second most points in school history and bettered the record of most points scored in a playoff game by 20 (the old record was a 50-0 win over Green County in 1993). Now time for a second straight playoff trip to Breathitt County, a place the Lions lost 28-13 last season. It will be tough, but I feel better about Garrard County tonight than I have all season!:thumb:

How did Ray do tonight?

I knew you would come thru with the update. Sorry I couldn't make the game. 70 points!! 50 unanswered points!! WOW!! There ought to be some great highlights from this one! This is a HUGE win for Garrard!

I would have came through earlier, but when it's 70-33 you don't get home as quick as usual!

Definitely some big highlights. I believe Fred Hayes scored three touchdowns. Tyler Ray definitely had two (maybe three), including a fantastic catch against two defenders at the halftime buzzer, which put Garrard up 49-21.

The junior varsity got some good action late. Freshman Stallone Morales had a touchdown run late, his first of his career. The young Lions looked pretty good.

As an added note, the defense tonight started three freshmen and four sophomores. The defense has taken some lumps this season, but there is reason to believe they can be really solid the next couple years.

One other point - this was the best refereed game I've seen in a long time. The stripes were from the Louisville-area and they were in complete command, spotted the ball great, and were very succinct with the gestures on penalties. I was so happy to see guys work hard and do a great job!:thumb:

Good Job Lions...Keep it going...:thumb:

It gets infinitely tougher next week at Breathitt County. Bobcats run it well and that's what Garrard struggles to stop. But the Lions played one of their best games last season at Breathitt and hopefully the same can happen this time. Breathitt will be the favorite, but if Garrard can stay close...

Very good win for the Golden Lions. 70 points qualifies as an offensive explosion. I thought they would win, but OH MY!!!

MUCH tougher test next week facing a team playing it's best ball of the season. Breathitt come playoff time is a very tough place to play.
