Newport Central Catholic 22 Beechwood 18 (Frosh)

Featured Replies

An exciting back and forth game. Beechwood took the lead at 18-14 on a 4th and goal 4 yard TD run with about 3 1/2 minutes to go. New Cath came right back and passed their way to the win, scoring on about a 30 yard pass play with less than a minute to go.

Good job Breds! Was an great game. Big kickoff return set up the game winning TD.:ylsuper:

Nice job NC!

Per, yesterdays coments on Beechwoods freshman team....."What classes fill thier roster. The breakdown is as follows: 7 Frosh, 9 eight graders and 5 seventh graders.

Very good game...a few kids on NCC got hurt during the game, #10 never returned...Are they all right?

That was a nice run on the return and it looked like he might break it after busting out of the pack. But it was a short kick and the return was only 30 yards at most when it was all said and done. And they still had 45 yards to go for the winning TD. It was NCC's passing game that won the game for them without a doubt. Beechwood did a very nice job shutting down NCC's running game almost completely after that first big run but they never could get NCC's passing game stopped. The interceptions were nice but the Beechwood D backs misjudged passes several times when they were in good position for the INT only to watch the ball go over their head for a completion. And that out and up pattern NCC used for the winning score worked for big plays several times.

Nice Win. Even its a ugly win, a win is a win. Go back to work and fix the errors now.

Can anyone break down the scoring? Also how did Pete Collopy and Brady Thacker look for NCC?

Not sure who scored for NCC....First TD for BW was about a 30 yard catch from # 42 (Nussbaum), second score was a INT from about 40 yards out by # 24 (Erdman) and the last TD came on a 4th and goal sweep from about 5 yards out by #24 (Erdman).....

NCC's scoring was a 15 yard TD run by Boyton on an inside sweep. Cain scored on a 6 yard scramble off a 4th down play designed to be a pass. The winning TD was a 30 yard pass from Cain to Infante.

Collopy looked very good on defense playing middle linebacker. He was injured the 4th quarter. Something in the collarbone area and I don't think he returned.

Thacker was very impressive on the line. Two or three times on an inside stunt he tackled the QB before he could even get a step from center. With Beechwood on the 40 and driving for a go ahead score with about 1:00 to go he stunted, grabbed the QB stripping the ball and recovered the fumble to lock up the win for NCC. He was the most impressive defensive player for NCC. Must have had 10 tackles even though he was playing defensive tackle.
