August 30, 200917 yr Perhaps off topic, but do you know how these "escalators" work? What causes the increases? It's what you were talking about earlier, if I'm not mistaken. For example one defensive lineman might have an escalator in his contract that states if he makes the pro bowl, he gets $100,000 more. Or if he gets more than 10 sacks, he gets $1 million. After doing a little research into it, it can also be about playing time. For example when Matt Lienart signed his contract he had escalators that said if he played a certain amount of snaps, he got more money. According to this article, which I only skimmed through... Most escalators are based heavily on playing time.
August 31, 200917 yr Generally if it's an incentive based contract they will say that in the report. I'm sure there are certain escalators that will trigger pay increases in his contract, but I wouldn't think his contract would be an incentive-based contract. Maybe it is, I don't know. But his guaranteed money isn't much less than Smith's. I think this is the important thing about this contract. It sounds like the numbers are bigger than what he will be paid. Lot of incentives that he will probably never reach. It's a shame he is so far behind! Cincy needs him! This is also going to make the Crabtree deal even tougher to find common ground.

August 31, 200917 yr Where did you see something about the incentives in his contract? Haven't seen it. Just heard talk. Makes sense and that's how a lot of those disputes get settled.
August 31, 200917 yr Now how long till he starts his first game? I'd say minimum 4 weeks unless there is an injury.
September 1, 200917 yr Premonition? Actually I meant if another lineman was injured and he was pressed into duty. Who knew.
