June 4, 200917 yr Schue I checked with someone VERY much in the know on this for Louisville. Overall Louisville Catholic Schools enrollment is not down. Administrations have been cut back and schools have been combined. However there has not been any significant decline in any enrollment. I was told that SHA has gone down a little but Mercy and Assumption are getting those students. That's interesting. I know there was a lot of worry that Assumption would start losing a lot of students now that Mercy's new campus is in Fern Creek. Maybe SHA is hurting more from that move than AHS is. Surprising.

June 5, 200917 yr Enrollment is down IMO as a result of the economy... Now for all the other post praising the private school system. I too was raised in the private "parochial" system as well as my children. At a point in time we switched our children from the private to the public system, this was not a financial decision. Once in the public system we realized that the public system offered more for our children in the form of classes etc, etc, etc. In addition, IMO the private system is great for an average to good student although the system struggles with children that are exceptionaly gifted or those that need alittle extra help. Please remember our children are a result of what we teach at home not what they learn in school... This isn't really a public v. private issue, so let's keep that talk out of this discussion. The story I saw in the C-J about Beth Haven dropping football because of numbers had me wondering if private (Christian, parochial or other) schools are seeing a drop in enrollment numbers, whether because of the economy or otherwise. Is this the case? Are private schools starting to feel the pinch as salaries get cut or expected raises are frozen, making it more difficult for parents to cover that tuition bill?

I am only reporting what I am told by someone within the Archdiocese that has every detail about every school.
