Just an FYI- South has not had all their players all summer either- they may have had full crew at Georgetown camp but did not have everyone over at Shelby Co. I do agree that summer ball doesn't really mean anything so no one needs to become over confident at this point. I would still say that Simon is the favorite until someone beats them and South definitely has an opportunity this year. Not sure that there are 5 or 6 teams that can really make a run at it and with Oldham losing Caoch Just, I would say they are at a big disadvantage.

 

 

I would say that Oldham, Simon, Shelby, Anderson and Owen join South as shots to win the 8th region.

 

I would say that a couple of those teams are long shots...but by the time march comes around who knows! We are still 9 months from the regional tournament! Anderson is EXTREMELY young but very talented. Shelby has some veteran guards capable of getting hot and playing with anybody in the region. Owen may have the best player and Oldham will matchup favorably with south and Simon is coming off back to backs.

 

 

I would say the 8th COULD go to any of those teams....albeit some have better chances then others.

Actually that is not the case- key player and starter was not there the night they beat both Anderson and Shelby- I believe that was Wednesday night at Shelby Co and I think that there may have been another starter that was also missing that night. Perhaps we have a different view of who are the key players at South. South has McGuffin (sr) coming back who will be key but much will lie in their talented sophomore class who did a bulk of the scoring last year.

If nobody gets hurt or anything like that, the Owen Co. Lady Rebels will make some noise in the 8th region tourney this year. Mark it down.

 

They have key components in the right positions, plus they had the Oldham Co. game in the palms of their hands in the 8th region tourney last year, but it slipped away. My guess is that Coach Osborne will make sure that his girls have learned from and will be motivated by the way that game played out. There is a lot of time between now and March 2010, but this next season is going to be unpredictable, exciting to watch, and a whole bunch of fun.

 

... AND the exact same scenario applies to the ladies from Walton-Verona - and you can mark that down, too. This just might be the year that an "A-school" breaks into Diddle's big dance to represent the 8th. Who knows???

No matter which team it is that we might refer to, pick one, summer wins are just like puffs of smoke or cotton candy. Many a team has won early season games and/or in the summertime yet end up on the rocks come tournament time, and only a few can keep the wins a-coming when it really counts. No doubt about it, summer wins are hollow accomplishments at best, and all of us who are rooting for our favorite teams need to keep that in mind.

 

Summertime ball has been known to produce many paper tigers that have had no sharp bite by the time that February and March roll around - when wins matter the most.

IMO Simon is the team to beat. Both South and Anderson have tons of young talent but not sure if either of them have the experience to win the BIG game and both will make lots of noise over the next several years. I am not sure if Oldham is deep enough to make a real run like you seem to think but that is what makes this stuff fun!

I didn't think they were all that talented/deep last year and they exceeded at least my expectations. I would say a lot of that had to do with coach Just so obviously losing him is going to hurt. I just wouldn't be surprised to see them be very competitive within the region and give South and the other contenders a run for their money.

 

 

IMO South is the favorite. Im not going to give it to Simon just b/c they have won the last two years. Toliver will be a huge loss, but maybe even more importantly will be the loss of their size. The bigs are a huge question at Simon and the guards are tiny. Obviously there is a lot of talent on that team, Im just not sure that they are going to be able to compete without all the size they have had in the last few years. Their style of play will be harder to pull off without all that size they have had over the last several seasons (and im not just talking about the bigs either).

Simon lost the Figgins twins and Kayla Smith...The only rotation post player they return is Brown...and she is undersized (im guessing 5-6 or so). I love the job coach Stowers does with his team, but Im just not convinced they can play that same style and be successful with the smaller kids. It's hard to pressure and trap when you don't have size to disrupt and protect. We shall see though.

 

Anderson could be the biggest wild card in the region. They obviously have some great young talent, but that talent may still be just too young. For a team playing a lot of 8th and 9th graders they probably will have some of the biggest room to grow.

 

 

All that being said I still like South to win it in a very enjoyable and competitive region!
