I spent Saturday at David Lipscomb in Nashville for the String Music Showcase.Here are a few thoughts from the day:

 

I was very impressed with the Derek Smith All-Stars 16s group coached by Jeff Davis. The team has what I believe to be the top three players in the Class of 2011 in the state of Kentucky - Warren Central's George Fant, Clark County's Robbie Stenzel and Elliott County's Timmy Knipp - and some of the other bst players in that class with Warren Central's Jordan Shanklin, Christian County's Donovan Kates and Eastern's Remy Abell and Arman Marks. Fant was out of this world in the two games I saw, hitting three three-pointers, throwing down a number of dunks and playing solid defense. Kates is also a serious Division I prospect, while Abell and Marks showed well in the open court. Stenzel and Knipp are hobbled a bit with nagging injuries, while Shanklin looks great after missing the final 11 games of the high school season with a stress fracture in his shin.

Derek Smith 16s won the tourney. They beat Nashville Celtics, who won the Real Deal on the Hill last weekend, in the championship game. They had them down by as many as 28 points. Derek Smith had 6 players that averaged double figures this last weekend. Timmy Knipp had 27 points in the championship game, while Remey Abell led them for the weekend with an average of just over 13 ppg.

Coach Davis has loaded up this year! Congrats on winning the tournament! They are a HEAVY favorite to win the 16u state tournament. I don't know of any teams that can match up with that type of talent in Kentucky.

Congrats to Coach Davis and his team! His name should be brought up in every head coaching search.

Maschmeyer and Purvis didn't play this weekend. Shanklin and Nickel are still far from 100% due to injuries this past season. When this team gets everyone 100% healthy, they will be as good as any team they will play this summer.

Thats a very good AAU team. It has almost all the best players in the class on 1 team. Or atleast probably 5 out of the top 10.

Does anyone know where you can find the DS All Star schedule on the web?? I tried the DS site and they still have the old information for last year under the roster and schedule. I would assume they are playing in the 15-17 May Kentucky State Championships at the KBA in Lexington?? Other than that I don't know where they are playing.

 

Any assistance would be appreciated. Would like to see the DS 16U team as they have a loaded team full of talent. Again, thanks for any help.

They will be off this weekend, the following weekend they will be in northern Cincy at Sports Plus for the Queen City Classic, then the State Tourney, Last I heard there are a few options for Memorial Day weekend.

Travis Pervis is the one that had to sit out all of this season due to a tore ACL. The Dr just released him last Monday to start working out. He hopes to be able to play by the AAU State Tourney.

Shanklin, I believe, had a stress fracture to one of his legs and Nickell broke his ankle just after Christmas.

How ponits a game is this bunch scoring? What kind of style?

How ponits a game is this bunch scoring? What kind of style?

 

Very fast paced. Averaged close to 80 a game. Had 6 players average double figures for last weekends event.
