Clay & South Laurel Tops in 13th Region

Featured Replies

With three weeks remaining in the regular season, Clay County and South Laurel look like the teams to beat in the 13th region.

Both have playes week schedules and it will show late

Since they have played weak schedules, who would you say has played the stronger schedule and should be the favorite?

What schedule are you looking at and who are you considering weak? Clay has played Whitley twice, Bell, Leslie, Perry Central, Montgomery, Garrard, Somerset, all of which have solid ball clubs. Come on.....give credit where credit is due. Clay has a very solid team and is a definite contender for a regional title. The same can be said for South Laurel. Don't kid yourself with the "weak schedule" business!!

I would have to say Bell Co. will be in the mix also.

I would think so too. I think whoever gets hot late will have a good chance. The pitching will have to play into also.

I would say that the top 5 are SL, Clay, Bell, Middlesboro, and WC/Corbin at this point. I honestly don't think anyone outside of these 5 even have a chance.

Obviously, you were not at the Whitley/South Laurel game last night......you would have to include Whitley after their 5-3 win over the Cards.....looks like Ledington is getting the job done after alll

I put Whitley in there. They are on the outer edge though. I mean they have lost 8 games, just like Corbin. And furthermore, they split with Corbin. In my opinion, the two teams are very even.

I just don't think they are at the very top. I did however say they were still a contender for the region. What more can you ask for?

Ledington the coach at Bell County last year when they won the region. They started the season 1-5, but as the season moved along they got better. The bottom line is that Rob can flat out coach and loves the game. Last year Whitley was 15-16 on the season. Right now, Whitley is 12-8 after starting the season 1-7. They are 11-1 since April 7th. They lost to Clay twice, both early in the season by 2 runs each time.

Whitley may be the darkhorse, but if somehow they can keep improving, they have a legit shot to win the region. If Ledington were to do that in his first season at Whitley, oh my!

And to think, .... the former AD at South Laurel wouldn't hire Ledington to coach the Cardinals, ..... even though Rob was a Cardinal player at Laurel County High in the 80's for that very AD/baseball coach! :sssh:

Ledington has done a great job with his team, if he had not had the injuries to some of his pitchers he may have had an even better record.

I think that with South beating Bell, Bell beating Clay, Clay beating Whitley, and Whitley beating South, a person could make a valid arguement that the region is wide open at this point, and there may not be a clear cut favorite.

I will say that I think the 50th District is the toughest district in the region at this point in time.

They are playing very well right now. However, let's not forget that they are still 12-8. Their body of work isn't too impressive.

Bell County hasn't lost a step without him. So there goes that argument.

This is Ledington's first year, and he doesn't even get 1/2 the season to build anything? Wow.

He left the Bell program in MUCH better shape then he found it and that is a bad thing? Double wow. :scared: Bell had a losing record the year before Ledington took over. First year after a slow start, .... won the region. went 26-15.

I am not saying he will win the 13th in his first year at Whitley, but the similarities are uncanny. Whitley had a losing season last year, got off to a slow start, but are playing much better right now.

That is an impressive body of work on Ledington's part. You have to give a coach a little time to turn around a team/program, and he appears to be doing it at 2 different schools in consecutive seasons.

South Beat Bell.

Whitley Beat South.

For my money I will take Ledington.

I was never had an argument about Smith or Ledington. I just think that Ledington is doing a good job at Whitley. 12-8 is pretty good after a 1-7 start. And it is not how you start it is how you finish, which remains to be seen for all the teams at this point.

:thumb: And Bell started the season last year in much the same fashion and that was Ledington's first year as well. He is already within 3 wins of last year's season total for Whitley with several more to play. His team's seem to get better as the season wears on and that, my friends, is a good coach!
