Covington Catholic 4 Ryle 2

 

Comments, stats, the good, the bad and the ugly much later tonight, as I have far too many things to do at the moment...

Solid but not great game for either team.

 

Both teams ran into outs. Ryle cost themselves a run when the third out at third base occurred just before the runner crossed home plate. I think we can call that a "teaching moment" for Coach Roesel. They also had a runner thrown out at 2nd trying to stretch a single into a double. CCH also had runners thrown out as well including 2 at the plate.

 

Isler came off a short rest and threw well but not as well as he can.

 

The lefty for Ryle was solid as long as he kept the ball low and/or the outside of the plate. He left two up to Isler that resulted in a bomb and a double.

 

The Meier kid for Ryle had the longest single you'll see with one off the wall to right field. I thought it was going out.

 

Ryle may have had a few juniors missing as CCH did due to the ACT exam.

The main take-away from the game today...Cov Cath won, but there is not any real separation in talent level that most would have thought was there before the game was played. I am also really busy and will make further comments about the game later.

As Clyde posted, while it was a good game, both teams shot themselves in the foot a couple of times. Of course if you are a glass half full, half empty type of guy, you could also say that the defense of both teams rose to the occasion, but I will agree with what Clyde said and say it will be a learning process for both teams.

The Home Run (380 #1) by Isler was indeed a shot just to the right of the 380 sign but I truly thought the double down the left field line was hit harder but for whatever reason the ball just died prior to going out of the park.

Isler pitched six complete innings and while he didn’t have his best stuff, he gave up only two runs and struck out seven. Young Adam Shumate came in and with the help of an outstanding play by Darner on a shot hit right over the third base bag that RD back handed and then threw over to Isler, who dug the ball out of the ground for the first out of the inning. Shumate then got the next two hitters to go 4-3 and then pop up to Maile to end the game.

Eggemeier, wasn’t there today as he was sick and from what I was told Nutini had been sick Thursday and Friday but felt well enough to play. Also a couple of juniors were taking the ACT test today.

The good: While Isler pitching wasn’t as good as it has been (man am I getting picky in my old age or what) his bat was indeed hot. A HR and a double were fun to watch. Second baseman Logan Siemer had a good day at the plate, as he reached base three times, and his head first slide into home for the second run of the day for CovCath wasn’t text book, it was effect. CovCath did not commit an error and Tyler Holocher had five assists or one put out.

The bad: Base running. CovCath needs to understand that the other teams can and do makes plays also and when you have batters coming up like Maile, Darner and Isler you don’t need to take chances.

The ugly: The deep outfield! While the infield and the short outfield were in pretty good condition, the deep outfield was very wet. It won’t take much to rain out the Monday, Tuesday and or Wednesday games.

Siemer 4 PA 1 run scored 1 hit 1 rbi 1 walk 1 k and reached base via E-1

Maile 4 PA 1 hit (double) 2 rbi and 2 fc

Darner 3 PA 1 hit and 1 k

Isler 3 PA 2 hits (double + HR 1st 380) 1 run scored and 1 rbi

Lafever 3 PA 1 walk 1 caught stealing and 1 fc

Holocher 3 PA

Schlagbaum 3 PA 1 hit 1 walk and 1 k

Stayton 3 PA 1 rbi and 1 walk

Reise 1 run scored

Isler 91 pitches 6 complete innings 26 PA 6 hits 2 runs 2 er’s 2 walks 7 k’s

Shumate 10 pitches 1 complete inning 3 PA 0 hits 0 runs 0 walks 0 k’s

CovCath is now 5-0 and will be playing Conner Monday at 5pm @ CovCath.

 

BTW, it is prom night. Gentlemen, have fun, but please be smart and safe, not only for yourselves but for the young ladies you are taking out tonight.

 

If you believe in the Easter Bunny you just might think CovCath will be playing Monday, but the weather forecast, just might not agree with you!

Unfortunately wasn't able to make this one, but have talked to enough people about it that I think two things are fairly evident:

 

1) Ryle is indeed for real and is going to be a contender in the region this year. Not predicting they are going to win it, but they can play with anyone in the 9th.

 

2) There is not the separation between CCH and the rest of the teams that most people (including myself) thought going into this season. By no means am I saying they are not good, but they are not a "special" team.

Clyde said a while back, that pitching just might be the strength of this team and this is proving to be correct.

 

One of the areas that I had concern about was the defense but the "D" has been doing very well indeed thank you.

 

The hitting? That will come around, and I am not at all concerned about the hitting.

 

If you remember, I expressed concern with VanSant choosing not to play baseball (his bat) and Mattie being unable to play (arm, bat and glove), but the young men like Seimer and Eggemeier are doing quite well, both in the field and at the plate.

 

If and when Mattie can play (and that is a big if), it will be a huge lift for the Colonels as not only will he bring an additional arm to the mound, but his glove and bat would be a big help.

 

 

Special team? That will be answered at and after each game they play this season!

Agree on both points.

I think as the season goes, people will see that CovCath really is farther ahead talent wise than the other teams. I don't think they are playing anywhere near where they can and will, and are still 5-0 vs some solid teams. The bats will pick up. Still think there are some glitches in the lineup that need to be fixed, especially at the plate. You can't have for sure outs coming up to the plate. And for a batter or two right now, it is a for sure out for the other team..

 

Pitching is definitely going to be the strength, as will the hitting once it gets going. If Shumate can come in and give a solid inning or two in relief like he has, that adds a lot to the pitching. Isler obviously did not have his best stuff today after just pitching Wednesday, but still managed to strike out 7 and keep a good Ryle lineup to 2 runs. Not bad at all. I was also impressed with Siemers slide ha! I'd have to disagree though, I think Ice's shot to center for his HR was hit pretty solid. The one to left just flat out died but was well hit too. I see some signs of life in the bats..keep it coming!

We're only two weeks (and less for some teams) into the season and I would hope that every team expects to get significantly stronger throughout the course of the season, not just CCH. Ryle hasn't been hitting very well themselves to this point, as acouple of their best hitters have yet to get untracked.

Which is my point. They are not playing anywhere near where they can and will, and are still beating very solid teams. I think they'll be tested more verse Conner this week. And I believe that when CovCath's bats wake up, they will be stronger than when Ryle's bats wake up. That was my point. I think Ryle has a nice ball team this year and I enjoy watching them. I just feel the better team won, and will show why they are the clear better team by the end of the season. [Or I hope].

So where was the high 80's everyone has been talking about on here for Isler. I was at the game and he was just above 80 at best. Seems funny you guys never give credit to the other pitching staffs when they hold you down... it only becomes CCH's own hitting problems that cause it. This game could have gone either way today and give credit to Cov Cath for taking advantage of multiple walks in one innings to win the game.

So it was just bad hitting by Cov Cath today, OK? Same number of hits Ryle had... I counted 7 each by the way. Cov Cath had Isler at the plate today and that was a difference...he was crushing everything he looked at. He looks much better at that plate than Maile right now that is for sure.

I'm not familiar with Ryle's hitters. I am just familiar with CovCath's, and know what they are capable of and obviously they are not to that level yet. As you said, Isler is hitting it, but the rest of our "potent" lineup is not doing too overwhelmingly great. I have been impressed with Darner though, he just didn't have it today is all. But on the same token, Etschied is Ryle's best player right? He had a very nice hit today. All I am saying is that both teams bats are SURE to pick up. I'm just of the opinion that CovCath's pick up will be more productive and noticable than Ryle's. I could be wrong, it's early yet.

So I'm sure you'll then also agree that CCH's pitching didn't hold Ryle's bats down and it had to do with Ryle just not hitting the way they should? And both our pitchers just pitched Tuesday, I believe, so only one more day rest than Isler.

 

Ryle's Cody Meier is one of the top hitters in NKY. He is one kid I would not want to be facing if I was a pitcher going against Ryle in a critical situation.
