With 2:32 left in the game LC's Jessica Upchurch was fouled, and took a nasty fall. She was injured (cut chin) and was tended to on the court. The game was delayed for several minutes. She was finally stitched up on the floor and sent to the locker room to change her jersey. Upchurch quickly came back out, and returned to the game. Now that's hard core... Not only did she return, but she hit a free throw to tie the game at 48-48 with 36 seconds left.

 

Angie Lawrence then went to the line for Rockcastle and missed the front end of a 1 and 1. Kendra Brown grabbed the board and she was fouled. Brown stepped up to the line with 30 seconds left, and hit a free throw to give LC a 1 pt lead. She missed the second. Chaos then broke out, with both teams turning the ball over and wildly scrambling around.

 

Rock finally got it back again, and was fouled. One free throw was made, tying the game again at 49-49 with 15 seconds to go. Upchurch then got the rebound and was fouled. She missed the front end of 1 and 1, but was bailed out by Henderson. Henderson got the offensive board, and she was fouled in the act of shooting. She calmly stepped up and hit 1 free throw, giving LC the lead 50-49 with 8.4 seconds to go. The free throw stood up, as the Rock missed two shots as time was expiring.

 

What a crazy last three minutes, and a great game. Lincoln found a way to win without making a field goal in the 4th quarter.

I am being told now that she did not get stitches but that they used the butterfly strips to pull the cut together. I was told that they were going to take her to the hospital after the game to get stitches.

 

The report that was made on the radio was from information provided by one of the individuals treating her on the floor. The statement that she "needs 4 stitches" was misinterpreted to "she got 4 stitches".

 

Either way, a very gutsy performance by her.

I kind of wondered about that. I would think that Coach Noble would go absolutely nuts if they allowed the game to be delayed while stitching was done on the court. Still gutsy on the player's part, regardless.

Rockcastle fans were upset about it because it seemed to cool off their run. But, I was told that if they had moved her without closing up the wound, that the blood would have been all over the floor.

She was on the floor long enough to stitch it and do plenty more. Since she was o k to come back in, she probably should have been moved and the game go on.

 

With that being said...This was a GREAT game to watch. Great crowd from both sides. Great place hosting it.

 

Louisville and Morehead where both there looking at players.

Could have also called a foul on the take away from upchurch on the run out that would have sealed the deal.
