Greatest Upsets in District Tournament Play

Featured Replies

The year was 2004. Brett Rellly, Kevin Smith, Jason Cooper, Steve McCarthy, Evan McDole, Ryan Anderson, Michael Schenk, Rob Doyle, and Derrick Rhoden plied their trade for the Mustangs. Rhoden was in the dog house and didn't play.

The Mustangs had beaten CovCath, Owensboro, Holmes, Campbell County, Clark County, Highlands, University Heights, NCC, and were the "A" State Runners-up having lost to Hazard 43-38 in the finals. They were 23-5 going into the district tournament. Bracken County was 10-15.

Brossart drew Bracken County, and needed only defeat the Polar Bears to clinch a spot in the 10th Region Tournament. They had defeated them 62-41 earlier that season in the 10th Region "A" Finals.

Bracken came out in a tough and tight 2-3 zone, daring our perimeter guys to shoot and we couldn't throw it in the ocean. They doubled down on McDole on the block and dictated a very slow tempo. Late in the game Smith broke his hand.

The Mustangs fought their way out of the paper bag late in the game on a Ryan Anderson three and the Mustangs got the ball back on a Polar Bear traveling violation, appearing to be enough for the Stangs to survive and advance. An errant pass right into the hands of a Bracken County defender who scored the layup started the party and marked perhaps the biggest post-season upset in the state that year, and certainly the biggest upset of a modern-day Mustang team that I can remember.

We broadcast that game and it is still in our website archives. Occasionally it will get a hit or two - most likely from some old Polar Bear fans. That game is brought up whenever Brossart is in a position of playing what is considered to be an inferior opponent. That night the Polar Bears were best and I can visuallize the Bracken County players hurdling the VIP tables in celebration. That was the last game that Willie Schlarman coached with the Brossart Mustangs. The following year he took the job back at his alma mater (Highlands) where he continues to enjoy success among upper echelon 9th Region teams and Mike Code, his former assistant became the head coach of the Brossart Mustangs, a position that he holds today, five years later.

That statement hurt a little. :D That was a great night, but I've never seen a team take a loss with that much class.

Probably isn't one of the best in history, but last year Scott got beat by Campbell County in regular season play by 28 points. They went on later to beat Campbell in the district championship on a buzzer beater as time expired.

But both teams survived to the regional. I think theyre looking for 1st round upsets.

Lafayette lost to Tates Creek in District finals in 1979 before regrouping to take State Title.

This year's 64th District first round game with Russell, winner of 4 games during the season, upsetting Greenup Co.

Eh, maybe the 63rd District Tournament in 2009 at Raceland?

1976 or 1977 Tiny Oneida Baptist beat Clay Co. and Bob Keith on Clay Countys home floor. Hadn't happened in 25 years of Dist. play.

In 2005 ( I think ) a 10-15 ( I think ) West Carter team beat a 22-3 ( I think ) Morgan County team at Morgan County. Blake McCowan was a senior at Morgan and Casey Jones was WC's best player. Jones hit a jumper with seconds left to win it. That was a 62nd district game.

That was a great game. I think West could have won the region that season had they been able to beat Fairview. Daniel Barker wasn't much of an offensive threat at Point for West, but he was a good ball-handler, and defender. Casey and Michael Hollingsworth were both very good scorers and Daniel's younger brother Chris began to come into his own that year starting in the place of the injured Lance Lykins.

West's hopes of defeating Fairview were dashed when Casey Jones broke a bone in the top of his foot during a practice session on Friday prior to the regional tournament. Two minutes later after Jones' freak accident, Justin Wolfe (Center) suffered a concussion requiring several stitches. Neither player practiced for three days and a game time decision was made on both Jones and Wolfe. Jones gave a gutty performance with 16 pionts, but could not move laterally. Wolfe was ineffective and played limited minutes. West had a difficult time matching up against Fairview. West would have played Russell (Region Champs) next had they beaten Fairview. Defeating Russell would have been a difficult task with a healthy Jones and Wolfe.
