January 31, 200917 yr FF just left with his unit to go help people in Grayson Co. They will be gone 4-8days. Hopefully things get moving there. MrsFF, if I might be bold enough to speak on behalf for the folks of WKy, thank you! They really need all the help they can get, but if what I have heard and read, it will closer to the 8 then the 4. On the selfish side...I hope its closer to 4 days that he is gone. Our daughter has surgery on Friday, and I hate having him away from home, considering he was gone for 18 months just 11 months ago. I know what they are doing is a huge help though and I am proud of him for helping. I pray for those people everyday. I couldn't and can't imagine what they are going through.

January 31, 200917 yr Per the WKMS radio feed FEMA has arrived in Western Kentucky.......bringing food, cots, etc. and help...... Mrs FF your husband unit was mentioned in a USA Today article In Kentucky's Grayson County, about 80 miles southwest of Louisville, Emergency Management Director Randell Smith said the 25 National Guardsmen who have responded have no chain saws to clear fallen trees. He said roads are littered with fallen trees and people shivering in bone-chilling cold are in need.

January 31, 200917 yr Just left Mayfield and it is total devastation around Graves County and also in the Madisonville area. Heard from the CEO at WK Rural Electric last night that said he believes it will be at least 30 days for 40% of their customer's to be fully restored. Lots of tired on edge people...

What causes it to take so long to restore power? Seems like they would have a back up plan for emergencies like this. As far as a way to de-thaw ice or whatever the issue would be.

It is suppose to warm up some today which will help but it still a slow process. One problem they have been having is they will get some restored then another limb will fall and take out lines. Crews are spread thin and working 12 hour shifts.

Prayers and thanks for those utility workers that are working so hard to help restore power to everyone, too.

Not to mention the workers are having to cut through tons of downed trees and debris to even get to the lines. My next door neighbor works for PRECC and he said yesterday was the worst day they had because of the melting ice. The branches were springing back up and knocked down even more lines than the original ice!
