Pike County (59th & 60th) Super District - Did This Happen?

Featured Replies

It seems like back in the late winter/early spring of this past year there was some talk about combining the 59th District (East Ridge, Pikeville, Shelby Valley) and the 60th District (Belfry, Phelps, Pike County Central) into one combined district. Did this happen? If so, how does the postseason qualification play out? Did I dream this up?

It is the most ridiculous idea ever put together for high school sports in Kentucky, and I am amazed the other 15 regions allowed something so obviously unfair to everyone else to happen.

Other counties have had closing and consolidations and they had to make adjustments by moving teams. Why not Pike County?

Was this discussion of a Super Region or Super District, they were considering?

District. Six teams would make up one district. Tournament winner, runner up, and third place team would qualify for the region. The 57th District (Paintsville, Johnson Central, Magoffin County, Sheldon Clark, Lawrence County) would send their winner, runner up, and third place team to the region. The 58th District would send their winner and runner up.

I'm not sure it's a terrible idea, but I don't like how it's only done in the 15th Region. It should be all or none.

So it did happen?
Not sure but I believe, it was either presented or going to be presented for consideration last Fall.

Honestly don't know, where it went from there or what entity, had to make the final decision.

I just wasn't sure. The KHSAA site still lists there being two separate districts, but they aren't always totally up to date. It also shows the host school for the 59th & 60th district tournament later this year. So I don't know...

Yes it happened.

The coaches voted for it........twice......it didn't pass the 1st time, then The Pike Co. Super. gave some looks, made some comments and then bam....it passed, as there is a lot of non-tenured teachers who are coaches in Pike County.

It's a little like sub-districts in football in the 1980s. There's no way to do it to make it balanced, which is why it should be abolished as quickly as possible. Pike County is getting preferential treatment and it's incredibly unfair.

Until you drop below 256 teams in the state, you can have 64 districts with at least four teams in each. That's pretty basic math. We have between 270 and 280 now.

If the KHSAA can't handle it, give me a map and a list of teams and I'll do it in an afternoon.

What is the reasoning for this? The size of the county or what? I know it can take up to 45 minutes or so to get from Phelps to SV & maybe 30 from Belfry to SV.

KHSAA wanted it more than anyone else....it was their idea.

I don't see how that had anything to do with it.

Why?
