Cov Cath 69 Lou Central 52 Scrimmage

Featured Replies

I was referring to toughness. I agree though that Zach will make a living in the post. The guards need to get the ball down in the post from time to time though. The CCH big men had atleast 4 inches on all of the Central players today and threw the ball down low less than 5 times if I had to take a guess.

So you mean they didn't pound the ball down low in a preseason game?

Should this come as a surprise to anyone?

It doesn't surprise anyone I'm sure. But they NEED to. It's pretty obvious...

I also was told that CCH struggled vs. the press. It is very promising for Isler to come out today and play less than ten minutes as someone in here said, and come out with above 10 points and 4 rebounds. Someone earlier on said that Isler would need to step up big time in order for the colonels to do well this season, and this looks like a good sign.

Really will be nice to have Shover back to 100% eventually, good kid, good ballplayer. With his presence at guard, Maile's at forward, and Isler's at center it will be a solid lineup.

How did Wellbrock, Counts, and Ives do?

Listerman needs to realize VERY quick that Isler is going to be the heart and soul of that team this year. He was unstoppable at times and posted up whenever he wanted. The guards need to get him atleast 10-15 touches a game. He could average a double double this year IMO.

I will respectfully disagree with this strategy.......what I saw was methodical movement from a large "big-man" playing against a team with no one on the floor over 6'1" tall the entire game. I beleive Ice got the minutes he will probably expect to see all season. He came in late in the first half and gave quality minutes. He uses his body down low but don't see him logging major minutes from other players. Wellbrock will remain their primary post player. He played ok, but I feel he has a bigger "up-side" as he moves up/down the floor better.

Wellbrock and Isler will be the primary post players together. Zach IS the center. Wellbrock plays more of a four and five when Zach is out. They will need both of them together because they work well together. Wellbrock gets down on himself too often and too quick and that will hinder him a lot I think. Both of them WILL need to step it up for this team to go anywhere, because they can not live and die by their guards..they just aren't good enough.

I have to disagree with you there. If you were at the game, you know as well as I do that Wellbrock isn't as big of an offensive threat as Isler. Isler played probably less minutes than anyone else on the floor (Wellbrock, Maile, Ives, Shover, Pauly, Sorrell, Counts), but yet he still came out as the leading scorer for the Colonels with 12 points in probably 7-8 minutes AND was perfect from the field and free throw line. Wellbrock may be a bit better defender, but if you think he's better offensively...

He looked VERY uncomfortable with the ball and looked to get rid of it as soon as he got it unless he had a wide open lay up, and the one that he did have got pinned up against the backboard by a 6' nothing guard. :sssh:

I've seen CCH in both scrimmages and IMO their best lineup is going to be:

PG Ives

SG Shover

F/G Maile

F Wellbrock

C Isler

Wellbrock doesn't do well unless Isler is in there with him. That's a fact.

I know you were at the scrimmage based on your posts, so how did Counts, Ives, and Sorrell do? IMO whether Ives does well [as I think he can] as a PG will depend on how well CCH can do offensively. If CCH is forced to have Shover at PG it hinders his ability to shoot and drive more effectively as he would at the Shooting guard position.

Sorrell shot the ball well. He had a couple three's but once he missed two in a row, you could see his confidence go down.

Ives looked solid handling the rock but still struggled some to break the press. He looked very quick with the ball though and IMO is the best PG Covcath has. Him and Shover in the backcourt will be a very tough tandem to contain if they can feed off one another and not just jack up three's every time they touch the ball.

Counts played well but was somewhat a ghost at times. I don't remember him shooting too much. He will be able to contribute off the bench though. Physical kid who should get a few offensive boards and put backs if he learns to use his body down low.

I think the biggest think CCH needs to learn is that they can't live and die by the three this year. They really aren't good enough to do it, but if they penetrate, which IMO is their strength, they can be a very tough team to beat for ANYONE.

You may know more about the make -up of this team than I do............ I am commenting more on what I saw at the scrimmage. I understand that Isler may be late joining the team (after football) and perhaps would explain his later entry into the game. I agree that he played well, probably better than Wellbrock, but I don't recall that they spent much time on the floor together? Guess we'll see how it shakes out. Overall I thought CovCath looked a little sluggish and didn't seem to find a great rythmn/intensity, in part because they didn't shoot well early. They will shoot better and I'm sure their energy will increase.........it was just a scrimmage.

You are truly a HS sports Fan!! At the Highlands/JC in Paintsville game on Friday, and then at the CovCath bball Scrimmage in Louisville on Saturday.

You should get some kind of frequent driver points for that, 9 1/2 hours of windsheild time in a 24 hour period, thats impressive!

I didn't have to drive to either though.

You won't see Wellbrock and Isler on the floor much together this year because Coach L loves his guards but IMO, playing a smaller team such as Central, they would have been a lot tougher with those two in together since they both have a significant height advantage over the other team. I personally think Counts and Isler make for a better combo since Counts is more of an inside/out player than Wellbrock. When Isler was in, Counts was in there a lot with him. Thelen was in with Wellbrock when he got in.

Having seen Wellbrock and Islerplay together on JV and a bit on varsity, I'd disagree that Counts and Isler and Wellbrock and Thelen compliment each other. Isler is slow, no secret there, but he is power. Wellbrock has more speed but isn't as aggressive esp. on offense. Those two together works much better and I believe after a while we'll see them in together. But you're right Coach Listerman likes his guards and I was not at the scrimmage so I couldn't say how the shooting was, but I know for a fact if we rely on shooting, we're in trouble.

I never said Thelen and Wellbrock go better together, but simply that Listerman used those two together more in the scrimmage than Isler/Wellbrock.

Ah okay, gotcha. So DID they play well together?
