Conley and Farris and the big girl (cant think of her name) are big losses that their replacement players wont be able to replace (at least not with the same talent level). Plus the SK bench will be almost non-existent.

 

Anderson has to replace Milam, Gemmell, and Royalty. Those three (especially Milam) are going to be very hard to replace. If Brown can realize at least a portion of her massive potential, Anderson will be tough. She won't be the scorer that Milam was last year, but should be a better defender and rebounder. Anderson has no depth either, though. If any of the starters go down, Anderson could be in for a long year with their brutally tough out of region schedule.

Wainscott is nowhere near the player Conley was. Conley was their strongest defender and team leader, not to mention she could bomb away from outside. Wainscott was a nice reserve a year ago, but being thrust into the spotlight is a different game.

 

And yes, I have seen both the Figgins girls play. The one who was healthy last year is a decent player. She plays really hard and uses her size really well, but she's by no means a star. She was a nice reserve last season as well. I dont know as much about the other one, especially coming off of her injury but she was a nice player before she went down. I've just seen so many players struggle to come back from devasting knee injuries. If she's anything more then a spot up shooter I would be somewhat surprised.

 

The main thing Simon is going to miss is the bench IMO. Last season they could go to Wainscott and Figgins off the bench, and this year they are really lacking depth outside their first 5. It will be interesting to watch and see if they can develop even a 6th man. Im not sure who it would even be, maybe Ali Ponzer? She was decent for their JV team a year ago.

Everyone is going to target Toliver this season, and for good reason. If they other kids can step up Simon will be tough, but if they struggle Simon won't be nearly as tough as a season ago.

I've seen the Big 3 a lot (Anderson, Shelby, and SK), and one of them may well distance themselves from the pack...perhaps even be better than last year...but not at first.

 

There are major holes to fill at all three. The kinds of personnel losses you don't easily replace with the average player. magicfan is correct.... I think to say that any of these three will be better than last year is to make some pretty big assumptions about the girls moving up.

 

Mr. Athletics, you may well be correct about SK. Certainly, it wouldn't surprise me to see any of these three surpass last year's achievements...they're well-coached, and that's where it all starts.

 

But I really don't think any of us yet has a firm handle on where the top 8th Region girls teams are headed...yet.

They have Nikki Brown who got some good minutes last year and will come off the bench this year for SK. I think Simon has a deeper bench than many might think but the 3 seniors from last year will very well be missed.

I agree with both assessments...SK is deeper than many suspect, but...I'm not sure the Lady Pioneers will have the same quality of depth they had last year, as those girls move into starting roles. You just don't routinely replace those caliber of players every year.

Do any of you 8th region folks have any feedback on the Oldham-Male scrimmage fom wednesday?

I've heard she has decided to not play in college. She is an extremely intelligent young lady and I believe she has decided to focus on academics. Obviously, things are always subject to change, but that's what I have heard.

A couple weeks back she was still planning on it, but things might have changed by now.
