Actually Ballard is... They'll play #2 seed Caverna in round one of Region 1 1A. Reidland, is the ONLY team in the state in 2A that won't make the playoffs. THeir misery is almost over for football, then their basketball misery begins.

I think Ballard has a good shot at beating Caverna actually, could be a really interesting playoff picture.

Why does Reidland struggle so mightily in football? Tilghman usually has nice teams, Lone Oak is very much on the uptick, and while Heath is down this year, they've had numerous good teams over the years. I can only remember Reidland being good once.

Reidland is in southern McCracken County, being 2A, I'm not positive, but I believe their enrollment is around 500 or so. They had a pretty good team about 7 or 8 years ago, going all the way to the regional finals behind a quarterback named Brian Behrendt. This story could be started, "Once upon a time", as they've had football since about 1970, and have only had one really good team. If they go .500, it's a good year. Why they play poorly year after year, in my guess, is probably a combination of things, starting with a lack of winning tradition. Other than girls softball, Reidland's athletic programs have never been consistently competitive.

For those of you in other parts of the state, there's a BIG ruckus over potential consolidation of McCracken County schools of Heath, Lone Oak and Reidland for the high school system. A LOT of fokes in Reidland, (and all three communities for that matter) strongly oppose the consolidation. They want their kids to attend the school the parents went to. There's a lot more to this discussion that should likely be kicked around in a different forum, but this would be the ONLY way they'd ever taste consistent victory in football. For the record, I think the consolidation is gonna happen in the not so distant future. Westsider might have a little more insight.

I personally am against the consolidation myself, bigger is not always better!! But it boils down to the $$$ when it comes to the state making the decision. But I am a firm believer in keeping things in your community. If you are against the consolidation, which I have been hearing, you need to go look or talk to the Fancy Farm and Lowes folks, they fought the system and won.

Taking a look at the most recent numbers a consolidated McCracken County High School would house approximately 2,000 students. That seems pretty big. Would they perhaps make two schools out of the three, instead of only one?

I don't know that financially, it would make sense to make 2 out of 3. I personally, would think that consolidating city and county together, to make 2 out of 4 might make more sense, although I don't know how it would be done. But I'd take Tilghman with the other 3 and mix em together to make a North and South McCracken. (Or East and West) Would still have 2 pretty big schools.

Is Tilghman indepdendent or part of McCracken County schools? Bringing Tilghman into the mix would make the total number around 2,500 +/-, and splitting into two would mean a couple schools of 1,200 +/-. That would seem more feasible.

 

Is the population of McCracken County growing, stationary, or falling?

I thought the deal was a school with just 10-12 grades, housing ~1600 students and use the existing schools for the 9th grades.
