HMS 1st Tournament

Featured Replies

Great job by Coach Vories. This is a start of things to come for the Highlands Middles School and the Highlands program. Low turnout for teams, but hopefully the word will spread to make this a pre-season tourney teams schedule early for the good competition to prepare for their seasons.

I believe last year was the 1st year of the tourney. This is the 2nd year and it is looking like they should have 8 teams before the week is over. This was the brainchild I believe of Kieth Faust and is a big fundraiser for the 8th graders heading to Wash DC.

Coach Vories is doing an excellent job with helping organize it though and recruit some local teams for a good gate and competitive teams.

Problem is there is a St. Henry tourney going on as well and several teams are already committed to this.

Mods might want to move this to General Discussion its a middle school tourney.

What tournament are you speaking of and how is it a start of things to come for HMS and Highlands basketball? If you are referring to this past weekend's tourney, what kids that played in the tournament will even be attending Highlands?

That was a 1st annual tourney but 5th n 6th grade and select teams. There were plenty of boys from ft. Thomas in that as well. I believe vories may have had his hand in organizing that for the shoulder to shoulder foundation.

One of the biggest problems with this tourney is that it is so early that many teams are unable to compete if they have FB players (especially the small schools.....Bellevue-dayton etc.) I know Dayton played last year, but simply was unable to provide enough players this year this early. Seems to be a bit of a catch 22 for lots of schools, as these tourneys are good $ makers, but there's limited gym time once the HS season starts, so it's play 'em early or play 'em late. On a side note, I was told that Coach Dilts at Dayton is reviving the Dayton Middle School Holiday tourney he started several years ago. I hear that it had a brief stoppage last year when the former girls coach "dropped the ball". That tourney has proven to be a good tourney in years past with good competition, good awards, and good hospitality.

What are the dates? I know the Birds have a gap in their schedule during December. I can check with the coach and see if they are looking for Holiday tourneys.

Almost all of your team and two from Omega...:D

Don't know specific dates, but I was told there are 3 boys divisions and 3 girls divisions 6th, 7th, and 8th and that numerous days from Mid Dec to End Dec are blocked off for the tourney
