Papa - your points are well-taken, and I see what you're trying to say. If you'll note my previous posts, I point out that Shelby has played one of the most brutal schedules in the state, and the injuries have been devastating...although the worst of the injuries have come on the offensive side of the ball, where a key WR, the QB, and three OL have been out.

 

But I think Coach Shipley would agree with me when I say this is the Shelby stat that must change. Although the 233 yards per game average may be bloated because of the caliber of the competition, the bottom line is still the same...the Rockets have given up yardage on the ground in chunks, and they can't afford to. And in at least 4 games, Shelby's given up more yards than the opponent is averaging.

 

It's like being 0-8; you can take some comfort (when you've played a schedule like Shelby has) in the fact you've been beaten by the best...but it doesn't remove the pain of no wins.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if the Rockets shut down the Dragons' running game; Kollenberg is an incredible RB, but South has had no real passing game to complement him...I look for Shelby to cram 11 defenders within a few yards of the line of scrimmage...

I know now from reading these posts that South does not stand a chance against Shelby. Souths openents are 46 - 18. The only opponent that they have played with a losing record is J-Town. I don't think the Kollenberg kid is going to get much tonight. At running back the dragons are very one dimensional. With him a QB then they have a lot of other options. If that happens then I think you have to give South a glimmer of a chance.

I think the Dragons have a very real chance of winning this game. I think it's a real toss-up.

 

Although success stories tend to be overlooked during winless campaigns, the South defense - although very young - has performed pretty darn well, despite being on the field too much. They run three down linemen - Evan Jorgensen, Trafton Holder, and Josh Derringer - who've gotten an amazing amount of pressure on the opposing QBs - something you don't really expect linemen to do when you use just three. Cody Malone - one of the few seniors - is a tremendous athlete, at TE, LB, and as the punter. Kollenberg is the real deal...I've been amazed at how many yards he's piled up, considering everyone knows he's going to get the ball. Testament to his abilities. Jay Gatto is one of the hardest-hitting, smartest ILB I've seen in a while, despite being undersized.

 

Toss in the fact that only two South - Shelby games have been decided by more than 10 points over the last 9 years (average margin: 7.3 pts)...and I expect a close game.

 

As for South's passing game, Kollenberg has been their most consistent option. But Wallace is very young, and has the physical tools to be very good. Cannon arm...linked up for a LONG TD pass vs. Nelson last week. He just needs the reps to iron out the little things that make you a legitimate, consistent threat as a passer.

 

I think the key to the game is how the defenses perform against kids who didn't start the year as their team's starting QBs...
