Richie Phares (Scott County High, Georgetown): Richie is hands down the most polished postman in the state this year. Around the basket he scores with both hands and is unstoppable. This past year he has added good range to his game and his passing ability has picked up. Richie probably will wind up at a high mid major, but if a big conference second tier team took a chance on this 6’7” power forward I feel before it’s all said and done he would be a great asset to the team.

I wouldn't go that far. I believe there could be some other players Holmes don't have an answer for. At the same time Holmes has some players that Scott Co. may not have an answer for.

I was talkin being able to match up wise. Phares is the one player that Holmes can't match up with IMO and will be at a disadvantage defensively trying to guard him.

Phares can be very good, if he WANTS to be. I thought he really turned it on during the latter part of last season. But I wasn't impressed when I saw him in the offseason/AAU season. I have heard he really isn't into basketball and that may be what impacts his motivation.

When I watched him play this summer with his traveling AAU team he didn't seem to into it. He seemed to work harder when I saw him in the spring playing with them. A big problem I saw and from what Ive heard is he never hardly touched the ball. He was widely considered the best player on that team, but didn't get many shots up at all. The team was fairly successful, but didn't utilize him IMO. Maybe he needed to work a little harder to get the ball, but he just wasn't used much.

on one or two games, but I doubt if Richie would agree with your assessment. Richie had a couple of games he scored over 30 and most games he was high double digits. He played inside and out. We had a balanced team and Richie was a big factor in most games. If you worked to get open, you got the ball. Richie had the opportunity to develop his perimeter skills this summer which will pay off for him later as he will likely be needed in the paint the majority of the time at Scott County.

Based on what Ive heard said and what I have seen (4 or 5 games) I would disagree with you. Every game I saw he probably shot the ball less than atleast 4 or 5 other players on the team. He would be open a lot and not get the ball on the perimeter or in the post. Most of the buckets I seen him get was off putbacks.

First let me say I am a big fan of Richie. I think he has a huge upside. I also watched many of the games this summer. Probably more than you you watched. One tournament in Ohio I saw him go off for 27 points and the next game record a goose egg. When the kid wants to dominate and give maximum effort he can. Yes he can shoot the three, but with his size and strength I think right now he needs to work the post.

 

The thing I disagree with in the Ky report is that he scores with both hands. Too many times he uses his right hand on the left side, and when he goes up against opponents of equal size he is ineffective going left. Now I only say this constructively because I'm for the kid. When he develops a great left hand he will be nasty.

 

Yes there were times he didn't get the ball enough, but other times he got his share of touches.

 

Now, thats just how I see it, I'm not trying to be argumentative. I hope the very best for Richie, and from what I witnessed this summer he does love the game of basketball.

 

No, I'm not Scott County fan. He will have a great season as I think he the best player on Scott County's team.

Come regular season, I would suspect that Billy Hicks will find a way to get the ball to Richie, and he will have a tremendous season. There is a lot of truth in the posts above. DS U17 had a ton of great scorers. In AAU, the heirarchy does not exist as it usually does in high school, and it is tough to get everyone the shots they want. Richie had some outstanding games, and some not so outstanding, just like probably every other kid that played AAU this summer. Only Shooterx3 saw more DS games than I did probably. Richie always worked hard, never complained, and was a great team member. He is a fun kid to be around.

I just didn't feel like Phares had near enough touches considering how good he was. He was the most talented player on the team. I also did not feel like Meyer got as much opportunities as he should have. Thats my opinion from the games I have watched and what I have been told. I think both are better players than what I saw watching the games this summer.

I think Richie is a fantastic player and I can't entirely disagree with you, there were times he needed more touches. My guess is that Billy Hicks will make sure he gets the ball this season plenty. I think he will make a very good college player. And as I have said he has a huge upside.
